The Roxy New York 1982-84.

So i've been re-reading bill b and frank's aces LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE book. Anyone on here ever actually go to The Roxy in this era? Anyone know of any decent compilations that reflect the much-trumpeted multi-genre music policy they use to have there?
It sounds like the best club of all time - madly mixed/ multi racial crowds all getting down to a cross-pollination of all kinds of different tunes of the day, in an era when there was no specific genre holding sway.

Malcolm Mclaren hit upon the idea for 'Duck Rock' here, Madonna went there a lot and sang there..if i could go back in time to one club-night..

I went probably a dozen times 1982-84. Bambaataa and crew (Afrika Islam, Red Alert, Jazzy Joyce)were the house DJs. Special guests like McLaren and various rappers would do brief "track date" style performances. The real show was the breakers and the social mix -- hip 20something East Villagers and the underage b-boy uptown crowd. Far and away the most exciting thing happening in the city at the time, "yellow white black brown we can all get down." wha happened?

Yes, I went there a bunch of times, though I could never get anybody to go with me. Multiracial, though the crowd was mostly black. Many people danced, but few danced with one another. The dancing fascinated me, since it tended to be very minimal, more like standing and watching in rhythm than partying out. That's how I remember it, anyway. The room was large, had probably once been a warehouse; this gave a distanced feeling to everything, no matter how good the music - as did my not having any friends along.

Of course, there were break dancers too, who were fascinating in their own right. But most of the other dancing was watchful.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

the b boys would do this minimal hunched-shoulders "dance" where they'd stand in place and sway, bobbing and weaving to the beats.

I thought it was totally cool, and tried to incorporate the move into my fake dancing at weddings, etc. easier than the Twist!

every once in a while the overall action would slow down and the crowd would gather in a circle around the break dancers. something like a square dance or -- hey! -- a slam dance pit.

The minimal dance also included knee action. At least some of the time.

Saw DC's Troublefunk there sometime around '83. Absolutely awesome show - great call and response with the (mixed) crowd ("drop the bomb on the White House too"), incredible percussion and snazzy suits!

Also saw New Order there (maybe later, in '87). Closed the show with "LWTUA", dedicated to rock promoter Ruth Polski.

What city was this in?

And what were some of the typical songs played?

The Roxy playlist in the "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" book is insanely great.

Saxby to thread is right. I find his silence rather damning. I challenge him to appear here.

Saxby?

Bimble, Thursday, 5 July 2007 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

OK, OK, I'm here! (easy, bimble, ya hyped-up skeezer!)

I did not live too far from the Roxy and I went there just about every Friday (if not literally every one). (In fact I was far too convenient to all the great clubs!)

The one story that I love to recount, and obviously therefore must find interesting, is that we used to go every week and dance our asses off. Racially the club was pretty "mixed" (musically and racially) in '82 and '83; it was only later when "Hip-Hop" became more THE THING instead of A THING that it actually became less mixed and even a bit scary in there. (no, I am not implying that more black people equals scary, but that there were indeed more incidents of violence there and I felt a bit creepier vibe).

In the early times, say before "Sucker MCs" came out, they would play all sorts of stuff, not just straight "Hip-Hop".

Anyway, like I said, we went every week so we knew the deal... everything was totally cool. Then one week, there was this big crowd standing around in this one corner of the former roller rink. I thought that there must be some kind of serious fight or something (which really never happened) so I went over to look to see what it was.

The crowd was thick and I had to kind of worm my way in to see what was happening. And that is when I saw something I will never forget: people breakdancing! I had never seen anything so crazy off the hook before!!

Thing was, think about it. The week before and every week previously, never anything like this happened. This particular week, breakdancing!!! I'm sure it was going on uptown and elsewhere in the hood somewhere but I will never forget it, the dawn of breakdancing! This was obviously long before it was ever on TV or anything.

Of course ya know it was the Rock Steady Crew!!

Sick.

Coincidentally (and OT), years later I saw the first-ever U.S. Blue Aeroplanes show there.

I think of all the lists in Last Night A DJ..., the one that most plays to my taste is Loft's.

Eric H., Thursday, 5 July 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

... Or Warehouse's.

Hell, all those lists are pretty great.

Eric H., Thursday, 5 July 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, I went there a bunch of times, though I could never get anybody to go with me.

guessing it didn't have an "all ages" policy

bobby bedelia, Thursday, 5 July 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

no but eventually they did put in metal detectors.

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 5 July 2007 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

Gasp! I've been called a hyped-up skeezer!

By a smelly pineapple no less!

Seriously, no one is more fun to fight with than you, Saxby. (and considering your ludicrous comment that Journey led to punk, I'd say we've many more years of fighting ahead of us!)

Bimble, Thursday, 5 July 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

what a loser...

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 5 July 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

plus what i said, which is widely acknowledged, is that crappy corporate rock bands of the 70's like Journey were responsible for creating an atmosphere where punk rock would be a welcome thing.

Really, I couldn't possibly know less about Journey other than that they sucked all throughout high school.

And (1) don't EVER summon me to a thread again
(2) I am not interested in you at all for any purpose, let alone that which you have just described.

I think you are some sort of tasteless weird guy that is somehow also very aggressive in a way that I find sad. Try fucking a girl (or guy). You are probably Dutch or Norwegian or something and you are just jealous because you have no fucking idea what it means like to have actually lived through any sort of significant youth culture.

FUCK OFF AND LEAVE ME THE FUCK OUT OF YOUR SHIT ALTOGETHER.

You fucking smelly pineapple!

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 5 July 2007 06:14 (eighteen years ago)

This has been the best thread I've read so far on this here Web site. I haven't read many, granted, but still.

The nostalgia for this era of the Roxy is extraordinary. You get the same kind of awestruck memories here in Athens, GA, when folks talk about the late '70s-early '80s scene - Pylon et al.

I STILL do this... I know just what you mean!! In fact, that is the only dance I can do!

Saxby D. Elder, Friday, 6 July 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

Saxby, you take stuff way too seriously. Whatever humour was possible here, you killed it.

Bimble, Sunday, 8 July 2007 07:21 (eighteen years ago)

man, don't put that shit on me.

You are the one who acts like a jerk with your jive ass battle mentality. Actually, I joke around an awful lot in my posts and many people, not just you, don't understand them. Your posts actually lack any humor that I can detect. (saying "Gasp" is not funny, btw, just so you know) Just don't engage me in here again. I really just don't want to deal with you.

You obviously have a problem. Why else would you revive this thread two days later just to say that? Everyone else obviously let the shit go. Anyone who watched that idiotic Cherelle thread knows that you are fucked up. Leave me alone, I ain't kidding.

Plus, I go to the trouble of sharing a personal life experience with the entire world and whether you thought it was interesting or not, you chose to come with that bullshit instead of staying on topic.

Just back the fuck away.
