Rules, which you may honor or ignore as you see fit.

1 - Fit it on a standard 80 minute disc.

2 - Try to reuse players, or at least bandleaders, as little as possible.

3 - End it with "Epistrophy" just like a regular Monk set.

4 - Zip or Rar it up and post it here for sharesies.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

I will do this over the weekend, I think.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

ITS BEAT TIME!

ITS HOP TIME!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

ITS I'll get me coat.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not even a jazz douchebag and I might want to do this.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ah! My dad just did this! i'll get the tracklist.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Well, fuck. Three tries at YSIing an archived version didn't work, so here come the individual files.

"The Hooded One"*

1 Evidence, Steve Lacy and Don Cherry
2 Bemsha Swing, Cecil Taylor
3 Light Blue - John Coltrane (apparently originally released under Mal Waldron's name, though)
4 'Round Midnight - Wes Montgomery
5 I Mean You - Ralph Peterson
6 Crepescule With Nellie - Joe Lovano
7 Straight, No Chaser - Miles Davis
8 Simpatico/Misterioso - Howard Shore and Ornette Coleman
9 Nutty - Art Ensemble of Chicago and Cecil Taylor
10 Ruby My Dear - Carmen McRae
11 Trinkle Tinkle - The Paul Motian Trio
12 Epistrophy - M'Boom

* Yes, I know this is the silliest and most pretentious of all possible titles for this mix.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

vanity bump

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

You stole my Epistrophy!

Anyway, nice, I'll dl tonight I hope.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

It's okay though, I'll just use Rusell Gunn's.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I love me some M'Boom! But I haven't heard Russell Gunn's version, so I support that idea.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

This is tough, because I usually like Monk's versions better than any covers.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:36 (nineteen years ago)

I know what you mean. That's why a lot of my picks don't have piano at all.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

Most pianists don't seem to "get" Monk. That Cecil Taylor Bemsha Swing definitely would have been one of mine (drats).

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

There's a reason I rushed to be first.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

has anyone else heard 'monk's casino'? what do they make of it?

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:12 (nineteen years ago)

also, coo

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

This is the first I've heard of it. I like what I've heard of Schlippenbach, though.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

God, I wish I could match all the Jazz Douchebag posts! I can't thank people enough for all the education, and I can't wait until my Christmas treasure trove arrives so I can really start sharing the love.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

I feel we've done good work here.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Austin I love the look of that list and am downloading it right now, even the ones I already have so I can listen to them in the context of your list.

At the risk of being Mr Conservative I still can't get past Miles's version of of Round Midnight or Sonny Rollins's verion of Misterioso (excepting Monk's own versions of course).

I should have more Monk recordings than I do - I admire him more unreservedly than any jazzer except maybe Ellington but I have a lot more records by Miles, Coltrane, Ornette etc than I do of Monk.

frankiemachine, Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

I hope you guys like listening to it as much as I liked making it. Now post yours, please.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 16 December 2005 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

Nobody accepts the challenge?

I WINZ

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 18 December 2005 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't get around to this yet, I was making Chanukah gift mixes for family members today. I've got a bunch of shit in mind, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 18 December 2005 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

THAT'S RIGHT! YOU BETTER RUN!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

(I am going too keep bumping this thread until someone else posts a mix, or I die, or the world ends, or the admins interfere. Whichever comes first.)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, it's gonna happen. And when it does, it's gonna be off the hook. It's gonna be so far off the hook that it's gonna need a map to get back to the hook. It doesn't even remember what the hook looks like.

Only, it's not gonna happen this week. Next week, maybe.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

I can be patient. Sorta.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I have enough Monk covers to fill out a disc. This is pretty sad, now that I think about it.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 01:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not choosy. EPs can be great.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I did a little digging. But you stole my Bemsha Swing! Also, except for the vocal and instrumental versions of "Round Midnight," I tried not to repeat any songs, otherwise I could have done a Best of Round Midnight along the lines of the Best of Louie Louie.

1. Round Midnight (vocal) - Robert Wyatt
2. Well You Needn't - Herbie Hancock Quartet (HH, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and a VERY young Wynton Marsalis)
3. Eronel - Misha Mengelberg, Ken Vandermark & Hamid Drake
4. Bye-Ya - Anthony Coleman/Sephardic Tinge
5. Monk's Dream - Larry Young
6. Brilliant Corners - Anthony Braxton
7. Off Minor - Misha Mengelberg/Vandermark/Drake
8. Round Midnight (instrumental) - Herbie Hancock Quartet
9. Epistrophy - Lounge Lizards

I have a Miles Davis version of "Well You Needn't" that I wanted to work in, but the Hancock covers of both that and "Round Midnight" are fantastic.

It's too late tonight and I'll be in Memphis all day tomorrow, so I can't upload any of these until Wednesday.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm reasonably certain I've never heard any of those. Hooray!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

I could seriously fill that shit out if I worked all of Six Monk's Compositions in there instead of just "Brilliant Corners."

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

I included two songs from Monk tribute albums. I thought I had a TJ Kirk disc, but it's disappeared someplace. That would've made three. The only reason I suggested avoiding multiples by the same artist (and I fudged that myself) is to get plenty of variety on there. Variety is less important than getting goodness, though, so do what you gotta do to make it work.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

I should add "Variants of a Theme of Thelonious Monk (Criss Cross)" even though the writing is credited to Gunther Schuller. Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, Jim Hall, John Lewis, Eddie Costa and a bunch of other guys. Schuller's hand is in there, but they keep coming back to the Monk theme, so I think it would be okay.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, it's up, all in one .zip file.

http://s43.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2EA3RFCPPNWCY0MZ5XKB9TX1V7

I added the "Criss Cross" variations as track #4. Total time 67:11.

At last I'm not the only douchebag in the room.
