Bands you like but rarely listen to

okay, I really like the White Stripes and Tortoise, but for some reason, I hardly put their records on. I love the albums when I listen to them, but rarely do really pull them out of a catalogue. Which is weird, cause I love both bands. Anyone else have that?

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

Cardiacs. I love them (well, their earlier stuff), but I rarely find myself putting them on.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Super Furry Animals. I have no idea why. (why I rarely listen to them, not why I like them)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Pearl Jam. I used to be way into them as a teen, and over the years I listen to them less and less, but still like them and enjoy pulling their records out now and again.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Wu-Tang Clan. I have to be in the right mood...

Stephen C (ihope), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Weird, I've been listening to "36 Chambers" again and again over the last few days.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

kraftwerk. i just realized that last night and listened to ralf and florian.

the unbent, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Swans. When I do listen to them I *only* listen to them for weeks on end, but that only happens once every couple of years. Similarly, most stuff I like fluctuates like that: it's been a while since I listened to The Birthday Party or Foetus, for instance. But now I've told you this, I'll probably go and do just that, even though I was in a John Cale period.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

The Beatles. Oh wait.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

pretty much anything jazz

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

Merzbow. You really have to be in the right mood, and how often does that mood come? About twice a year for me usually. I really should sell some of the 25+ Merzbow releases I own.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'd say most bands I like I rarely listen to, just because there is not enough time. Too busy searching for more great artists to rarely listen to.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

What Mark said. Also, it's worse for bands who put out loads of records, because it makes dipping into that stack, to play just one, seem more intimidating, like I'd be forced to revisit them all for some grand chronological listening project.

So I just put on Shania's Greatest Hits!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

REM, Fiery Furnaces, Bonnie Prince Billy, MF Doom

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

maybe it's just post-adolescent cling, but i still really love bjork and radiohead... and listen to them about once a year if that, and even sometimes can't listen to it for very long. there's a lot of things i love that i don't listen to, but i am probably much more likely to be listening to something i hadn't even heard of yesterday, today, than i am something i loved 5 years ago.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

YOU OWN 25 MERZBOW CDS ALONE???JEBBUS, HOW MANY CDS DO YOU OWN TOTAL?

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

when you find new great artists, will you listen to them a lot?

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

oh wait. i didnt read that fully. now i see the second "rarely." my mistake.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

OTM.

There's just too damn much! I mean, I "like" Sufjan Stevens, not because of the hype, but because I find the whole thing fascinating. And I have listened to Illinoise, but not enough to know the album.

Just an example of an artist I love, but mostly theoretically, and I think the reason is time. There's too much to do, and too much of that stuff doesn't involve music.

Is there a thread for those who obsessively collect music (esp. new music) but never get around to exploring it?

I'm the world's biggest music fan who rarely listens.

Justin Shumaker (shueytexas), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

I have pretty much complete catalogs of Sparks, Roxy Music and offshoots, Steve Harley and Blondie. Those four artists alone must account for 80 pieces of vinyl on my shelf, yet I don't think I've played one within this decade.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Meat Puppets. With the early ones, I have to suspended disbelief to make it through the singing. The major label stuff is probably starting to shake off it's 90s altrock veneer, and might be more fun again. When I first heard Too High To Die, I remeber thinking *They finally figured out how to make it sound like he can carry a tune!*

bendy (bendy), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

Lately, Sleater-Kinney.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

This is a good question... for the pre-mp3 era. iTunes remembers, even when I forget.

Mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

Sonic Youth

King Of America (King Of America), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

This covers most of the music I like, actually. As someone mentioned, I also spend a lot of time hunting for new music -- which I often listen to repeatedly, once I've found something I really like, then shelve for random listening in the future. For instance, I've been listening to :wumpscut: for the first time in several months (a year?!), even though I absolutely love albums such as Born Again and Bunkertor 7. Similarly, I dug out the Gravediggaz' amazing 6 Feet Deep last night, which I haven't listened to in ages.

Josh Witkowski (braineater), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Wu-Tang.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

Sleater-Kinney also.

And Modest Mouse. Another one of those bands that I never have the urge to listen to, but whenever I pull one of their records out, I find myself going through most of the cataologe.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'll second Sonic Youth. Also, Boredoms.

Matt McEver (mattmc387), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

trumans water

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

i almost started this discussion a while ago...i really like and really enjoy when itunes randomly plays devin the dude but i never have the urge to choose to put him on myself.

Jimmy_tango, Thursday, 15 December 2005 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I have a feeling this is true of Sonic Youth for a LOT of people. And I do like them. I just can't listen to them very often.

Minor Threat would be another.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 15 December 2005 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

Sleater-Kinney (and I'm from Olympia!), Sonic Youth, Ramones, New York Dolls, Funkadelic

moriarty (moriarty), Thursday, 15 December 2005 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting that we got three S-K votes. For me, it probably has to do with the way I completely gorged myself on their stuff as soon as I discovered them (and they already had amassed quite a back catalogue at that point).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 15 December 2005 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, P-Funk I like but I'm sort of "past" them, or rather I'm just kind of sated from my younger days. Same with Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 15 December 2005 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

Beck also.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 15 December 2005 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

The Stooges, oddly enough.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

MBV. Because I OD'ed on 'em when all those fantastic EPs and albums came out 1987-91.

brettino's bounce (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 15 December 2005 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

Xenakis' La Legende d'Eer, which is very much a favourite but only gets played once a year or so.

Chinchilla Volapük (Captain Sleep), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:14 (nineteen years ago)

OK, not a band

Chinchilla Volapük (Captain Sleep), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting that we got three S-K votes.
I think for me, it's probably their intensity. I'm not always ready to fight the cause.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

Boredoms, definitely. And a vote for Guided By Voices.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:41 (nineteen years ago)
