I dig Love, but Revelation off of Da Capo has to be one of the weakest psych jamz ever!

Christ, it just goes nowhere! Never builds up a head of steam...Arthur just does all this bar band grunting over a vamp in the middle like forever....pointless side filler of an otherwise stellar chunk of 60s psych.

I remember thinking how awesome it was going to be when I saw how long it was, then being super let down.

out here has the jamz. and four sail.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

b-b-b-but it was the first single side-long album track! Too bad its totally unlistenable. Rest of the album is aces though.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

i don't love Love, but out here does have the jamz.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

It's a terrible track and I've never given a shit about the side-long thing. The other half of the album is stunning though (not quite as good as Forever Changes though.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking this last night. What a mistake. Though the first time I recall the phrase "giving head" being used to refer to oral sex in a song (TAKE THAT, LOU REED!).

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

i do remember being incredibly excited to hear this, thinking it was going to be some elaborate, intense song suite. alas it was not. I bet it killed live though.

Tyler Wilcox (tylerw), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

wasn't "sad eyed lady" the first sidelong album track? in any case, i've always thought the first six songs on da capo were the best thing they ever did. "revelations" is probably the worst though.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I love Love, and have never listened to that song all the way through.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

"Revelation" is bad but it's nothing compared to the wretched 14 minute drum solo on "doggone" off "out (t)here".

ELLI$, Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

"Wretched" should read "godly" in the previous reply.

Franklin Trench (blackshoeswhitesocks), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I love "Doggone." Out Here is so underrated.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah, doggone's the reason i got that album

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

but instra-mental is pretty awesome.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

in any case, i've always thought the first six songs on da capo were the best thing they ever did.

me too.

Will (will), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Agreed, the first side of Da Capo is definitely as good as any rock music that came out in the 60s--as good as Highway 61, Revolver, VU & Nico, et al...And Forever Changes might be better!

Tyler Wilcox (tylerw), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

iirc, it mixes well with the superpitcher mix of 'i walk' if you ever need a convenient bridge between somewhat disparate things. i think i recall that it's not a shuffled beat but it still works? i don't know for sure, haven't tried it in a while.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Not that I ever get the urge to listen to it, understand, but I don't think "Revelations" is that bad. It just doesn't go anywhere. The soprano sax bit is kinda nice, if I remember correctly. Certainly can't touch Side One, agreed. (I still like it better than the Stones' "Goin' Home", its predecessor.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

I only listened to it once about 15 years ago and haven't felt the urge for a repeat. Seemed like the kind of track bands use to fill out a double album when they don't have enough material, rather than a single album.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

i think its aight.

meme economist (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 26 February 2009 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Some funny vocals from Arthur, for sure. Not enough sax though.

Queueing For Latchstrings (Tom D.), Thursday, 26 February 2009 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

You know what?

I was listening to the Bee Gee's "Odessa", and thought "That's where I recognise Arthur Lee's sub-operatic warble from!"

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

eleven years pass...

The soprano sax bit is kinda nice

Definitely the highlight, yeah.

'Revelation' is no unqualified triumph but neither are many of the album's other tracks, including '7 and 7 Is', whose riff just doesn't compel me to rawk or break stuff like a good proto-noise/metal riff should. Anyway, taken in its entirety, Da Capo is way less lopsided than its reputation might suggest.

BOOM BIPBIPBIP YAYAAA!!

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 17 June 2020 01:47 (five years ago)

Is this an accurate transcription of the infamous fellatio line?

Baby, I feel so good
Till you give me a little head

Awkward, to say the least.
