i forgot how much i loved that shit. TLC's first album, SWV, Bobby Brown's "Bobby" album, Wrecks n' Effects (pioneers of new jack swing), Jodeci, Boyz II Men, Hi Five, some Jade, Shai "Freaky with U" song, Keith Sweat, some Jon B...fuck. I could go on. I don't really listen to this shit anymore, but there was a time when it was my shit. I'm not embarrassed. I wear my badge proud. and Boyz II Men actually holds up somewhat.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

TLC are classic!

Haha when i visited some friends at college we had a drunken singalong to "End of the road," I couldn't believe how many ppl remember the lyrics (everyone remembered them better than me!)

/embarrassing story

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Tony! Toni! Tone! people.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

But yeah '90s R&B can be totally classic obviously, "Real Love" and "Creep" being like pinnacles. Also "My Boo" - not sure how many R&Bass style tracks there were when that dropped but it seemed to have inspired several other R&Bass tracks on subsequent So So Def comps.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Inoj to thread.

I could never stand Boyz II Men, but I loved Keith Sweat and Al B. Sure.

mucho, Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Who's gonna be first to mention "no diggity" ?

2nd Guy cd also has to get a mention (Teddy Riley production !) as does the superlative "be careful" by Sparkle & R Kelly.

Also gotta give love to the old Ron G rap/rnb blends tapes which Puffy was inspired by/ripped off for his whole Uptown Records steez with Mary J. and tracks like "real love" and "what's the 411".

Jodeci are probably my favorite group from the era. "Freek 'n' you" is amazing. "Freek 'n' you" remix with Raekwon & Ghostface is even better.

ELLI$, Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Bobby Brown's "Bobby" album

I love this record! I think of it as late 80's because of the sound, but yeah, '92.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Classic stuff in this vein (1991 - 1994 were prime years): SWV "I'm So Into You", "Right Here (Human Nature Remix)" & "Anything (Old School Remix ft. Wu-Tang Clan)"; Aaliyah "Back and Forth"; Hi-Five "She's Playing Hard To Get"; Monica "Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)"; TLC "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" & "What About Your Friends"; "R. Kelly & Public Announcement "She's Got That Vibe"; Boyz II Men "Motownphilly"; Shanice "I Love Your Smile". "Creep" is so good, but seems a bit different from the party vibe. Slicker production for sure.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Faith's first cd on Bad Boy !

"Check it out" by Grand Puba + Mary J. Blige !

Adina Howard-freak like me !

"Can't you see" by Total & Biggie !

Early Aaliyah !

Classic r&b/rap tracks on Bad Boy !

First Ginuwine cd !

ELLI$, Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I've got a huge soft spot for Janet Jackson '93 album.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

"Real Love" and "Creep" being like pinnacles. Also "My Boo" -

easily three of the best songs of the 90s

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Early R Kelly and Brandy also...

Who did that song "Mr. DJ," it's on the tip of my tongue.

Bill E (bill_e), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

I OD'd on 90's R&B to the point where the contemporary stuff just doesn't satisfy like it used to. "Tell Me" by Groove Theory came on the radio today and yes, I performed it word for word, ad-lib for ad-lib. Classic stuff.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

What's that song that goes, "every freakin day/ and every freakin night/ I wanna freak you baby/ your body's so freakin tight"? Google is no help on the subject. I think they don't like "freakin".

viborgu, Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

JADE - I WANNA LOVE YOU

OH-OH-OH-OH-OH-OH-OHHH-OHHH-OHHH-YEAH-YEAH! YEAH!

totally my jam as a 9-yr-old

also Brownstone.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

have a feelin' its Jodeci

Boggy (boggy22), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I remember hearing En Vogue's "Hold On" on Top 40 circa '90, and thinking, "Thank you, hip hop. Thank you, Soul II Soul. R&B will now get funky again."

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

do you guys remember an all girl group called brownstone? i think that was their name. they had one big hit(atleast in europe). i wanna hear it again.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I blame this song for ruining the party (let's be real, late 90's R&B kinda sucked) but "All My Life" is truly awesome.

En Vogue - "Don't Let Go"!

Boyz II Men - "Thank U"!

R. J. Greene, Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Immature - "Feel The Funk"!
Kirk Franklin - "Stomp"! (maybe not R&B per se)
Soul 4 Real "Candy Rain"!
The Braids - "Bohemian Rhapsody"!

This is a trip...

R. J. Greene, Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

THE FREAKING SONG IS SHAI "FREAK YOU" I BELIEVE...

AND BROWNESTONE WAS THE SHIT. WHAT WAS THEIR HIT?

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

THE FREAKING SONG IS SHAI "FREAK YOU" I BELIEVE...

It's actually "Freak'n You" by Jodeci.

But you just made me think of Shai's "If I Ever Fall In Love Again" and for that you are awesome.

R. J. Greene, Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

I'll second the mention of Brandy. I've been inspired to hunt down "I Wanna Be Down" in my iTunes. I'll play Brian McKnight's "Anytime" after that. "Return Of The Mack" is also a pleasant memory, even if we're getting a little later in the '90s than some of the other suggestions.

John Fredland (jfredland), Friday, 16 December 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

oh, i just noticed that lex already mentioned brownstone.

i always do that!!!!

Lovelace (Lovelace), Friday, 16 December 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

you guys forgot 112, xscape, joe, d'angelo and dru hill.

D'Angelo's Brown Sugar one of my favorite albums ever...

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 16 December 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

"Return Of The Mack" is a late 90s song? I totally thought it was mid-80s. Best revenge song ever.

viborgu, Friday, 16 December 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and it's the Pony Remix of "Freak'n You" I was desperately ISO. ILM strikes again.

Every time i close my eyes
i wake up feelin' so horny
i can't get you outta my mind
sexin you be all i see
i would give anything
just to make you understand me

i don't give a damn about nothin' else
freak'n you is all i need

tonight i need your body
tonight you got my time
tonight you won't be sorry
tonight you got my mind

you got my mind all i wanna do is freak you

what must i say
what must i do
to show how much
i think about freak'n you
baby, what must i say
what must I do
to show how much
i think about freak'n you

i could go on for days
but i couldn't go on for weeks
i can even play with another body
but it wouldn't last cause i'm a freak
i am everything you see
to go by everything you do
and at night when i close my eyes
i only dream of freak'n you

tonight I need your body
tonight you got my time
tonight you won't be sorry
tonight you got my mind

whatever you want baby it will be fine so fine
what must i say
what must i do
to show how much
i think about freak'n you
what must i say
what must i do
to show how much
i think about freak'n you

freak out
and freak me up and down
DeVante swing
freak out
and freak me up and down
freak out
and freak me up and down

every freak'n night
and every freak'n day
i wanna freak you baby
in every freak'n way
every freak'n day
every freak'n night
i wanna freak you girl
your body's so freak'n tight
(repeat 1x)

what must i say
what must i do
to show how much
i think about freak'n you
what must i say
what must i do
to show how much
i think about freak'n you

what must i say
what must i do
to show how much
i think about freak'n you

i think about freak'n you
i wanna freak you
(repeat til fade)

Yeah...DeVante swing...huh? Yeah.

return of the mack...oh how i love it so.

at my 5 year high school reunion i got dressed listening to this song. getting all pimped out. i even pulled up to the reunion with this playing on my stereo. i got out of the car and one of my old classmates greeted me with "hey you turned gay since high school huh?". Needless to say all in all the reunion was a success, i drank scotch all night trying to impress (who i don't know) and vomited buffalo wings all over the side of my pimp mobile.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 16 December 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone remember a song that came out in the 90's....I believe the chorus was Let it Rain all night, let it rain all night. The song began " wind is whistling every tree is in sway, lightning's flashing" I love this song and can't remember the name or the woman who sings it if you know please e-mail me song title and artist.
