What's the earliest/latest double album you have that has one record with Sides 1 & 4, and the other with Sides 2 & 3?

In my collection, the latest is Donna Summer's Bad Girls. I can't think of the earliest... :/

Didn't they start doing this with two record set live albums in the late sixties, in order to, you know, preserve that heady flow? A lot of classical albums were done this way, probably starting in the 50s. I had a teacher for an opera course in college who railed about the subject in almost every class--he was constantly playing examples for us and getting the sides mixed up.

The earliest I can find in my collection are the Who's Tommy (it's an opera!) and The Grateful Dead's Live/Dead, both from 69. The latest that I can find is a recording of Kurt Weill's Silverlake from 1980. I can't think of any rock albums after that.

I don't have enough records to have a distinct "earliest" and "latest,' but "Songs in the Key of Life" and "Endless Summer" have that side layout. And it confused the hell out of me when I first got them!!

I think the only record I have that does this is The Kink Kronikles. Any reason as to why they do this?

Any reason as to why they do this?

Automatic record changers on hi-fi stereos couldn't FLIP a record, but they could drop a new one.

The master stroke in this type of side designation for Donna Summer's Bad Girls was that Side 1 and 4 were the dancey sides, and sides 2 & 3 were the more balladey sides. DJs only needed bring one of the two records to the gig, if they wanted to spin anything specifically dancey from Bad Girls (of which there was a lot)

In order to fully enjoy your records, you need a big ass hi-fi with autodropping arm. They look like shit and take up a lot of space, but at least you can play a bunch of records before you have to do any manual labor.

Damn, I was going to say Armand Schaubroek's "A Lot of People Would Like to See Armand Schaubroeck... Dead!", but then I remembered that it was 1&6, 2&5, 3&4... (I think)

Apologies for that useless bit of trivia...

Rombald, Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Rombald, that counts.. same idea, just more records.

dali madison's nut (donut), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Cool. IIRC it was released in 1972. It's quadraphonic too!

I had a version of Hendix's Electric Ladyland that did this but was a 1970's reissue. Were any of the originals pressings like this?

five years pass...

When listening to these, generally speaking, after Side 1, do you pull out the other disc and go to side 2 or just flip it and go to 4?

My copy of Live/Dead is one of these. It's a kind of weird green Warner Bros. label, I don't think I've got another record with the same label. In the case of that album, I listen the sides in order. But I often listen to a single side of an album.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

Listening to Songs in the Key of Life now and I went Side 1-->Side 4

It's a variation on this, it's laid out differently on the 12"

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, I have listened to Songs... like that before.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

I have an Anthony Braxton record, The Complete Braxton 1971 that does this. You have to pull out the other disc and play them in order, since the compositions flow across the sides.
