Anyone know anything about the long-ago-promised new Richard Davies lp?

(Yes, Richard Davies is secretly staticky dance-popster MIA.)

Richard Davies was billed to play at the Knitting Factory (New York) a few months ago on a Monday. When I showed up at 8pm the whole club was locked with no explanation. A couple of opening bands were standing around with their amps, not knowing why the shows were cancelled. No sign of Mr. Davies. I never got around to following up and figuring out what happened.

Nevermind, I was thinking of Dave Davies.

We are talking about the Moles Richard Davies right? Has there been anything since "Barbarians?"

caspar (caspar), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

does anyone still want a richard davies record after the last two?

keyth (keyth), Friday, 16 December 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

Telegraph is top 10 all-time material, folks. Barbarians, not so much.

I don't understand the Telegraph hate. I still want a new Richard Davies record. Is there a label associated with the rumored fourth solo LP? Wishing Tree?

seriously, it's going to go down at lost classic, mark my words...

caspar (caspar), Saturday, 17 December 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

not really. i didn't mind the song about the parade but the rest was nonsense. it was so middle of the road. his music used to be this odd and rather perfect mix of the eccentric and the classic even managing to simultaneously sound like all of my favorite flying nun bands at once but then it just turned dull and predictable. sad. still, it mus tbe said that his two moles records, the cardinal record and 'there's never been a crowd like this' are all genius so that's nothing to sneeze at.

"telegraph" is the last great rd lp - but there are nice moments on "barbarians". i heard a new record was being worked on for later in 2006. fingers crossed. the extra tracks on the cardinal reissue were fun.

jon dale, Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

yes, Barbarians is a grower. i saw him open for Tobin Sprout a few years ago, just before Barbarians came out. it was just him and his acoustic guitar, and he was incredible. stripped down versions of the Barbarians and Telegraph tracks...fantastic. wish i could find a tape of that show! Re: Cardinal re-issue--i think the original version sounds better, but it's great to have "Say the Words Impossible"!

From the looks of things, Wishing Tree Records no longer exists? Is he the kiss of death for indie record labels?

I need to start checking myspace more often. Two new RD tracks up on his. Apparently they're trying to find a label for the new album. For the lazy:

Both sound ok on first listen.

Ok, you people are letting me down. Recent developments:

1. Collaboration with Robert Pollard as "Cosmos" coming out in June. 3 mp3s out there. Richard sings something like four tracks, Robert sings eight. Richard wrote the music.

2. (More importantly?) The unreleased Cardinal Reunion EP is f-in amazing! I find four tracks on teh internets: Kal (Davies has had versions of this around for a while), Love Like Rain, Her, Carbolic Smoke Ball. Absolute top-quality (well, nearly) stuff.
