I recommend getting the Legrand compilation "Le Meilleur de Michel Legrand". There's bits of the Umbrellas of Cherbourg stuff in there, also some songs that I new from listening to Astrud Gilberto. I cannot place him in context for you.

that one & 'La Boite A Matelots' are the two I have five starred out. not like all of Cherbourg isn't one of the most beautiful pieces of music that's ever been written.
