Earache record label search and destroy!

Inspired by Scott's T&G thread - they've been at it forever, have managed to roll with the tide, and still put out good stuff: nothing as completely left-field as in the early days, but they've still got a good eye. Er, ear. Anyhow search and destroy!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Search: Morbid Angel all the way up through Gateways to Annihilation - I never heard Formulas Fatal to the Flesh so can't speak for that, but Altars of Madness & Blessed Are the Sick are both great. So's Covenant, though I'm not so high on it.

Destroy Wolverine Blues, it bores me sick!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Carcass' Heartworks has to be a search.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Recent stuff: Decapitated, Nihility and The Negation (new one in February!); Lost Soul, can't remember the title right now (on Wicked World, distributed by Earache). Older stuff: Napalm Death, everything; Terrorizer, World Downfall; Fudge Tunnel, Hate Songs In E Minor and Creep Diets; Godflesh, Streetcleaner, Pure and In All Languages.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Lots of destroy stuff, too. But most is in the great mean of average. Here's a prelim:

Crap, or destroy: The Haunted, Anal Cunt (all of them), Old, Beecher, Elysian Fields, Iron Monkey (all of them)

The non-crap, or classic: Lawnmower Deth (everything except the last one and EP/single or whatever it was), Confessor's first, Mistress, Cathedral (just about all) and the tribute to Black Sabbath, Masters of Misery

Median, best silly name: Ackercoke (?sp?)

George the Animal Steele, Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

The new Akercocke is disappointing. Not for musical reasons - it's better than their last album. But it's the first of their four CDs not to have a naked chick on the cover.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

The non-crap, or classic: Lawnmower Deth

Ah, ya beat me to it.

I still need to get Heartworks again, Ian C.'s book's convinced me I missed out on something there. The first two Carcass albums are some of the greatest musical comedy ever. "LIFE IS HARD AS A MORTUARY TECHNICIAN!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I hated Wolverine Blues as well.

I will second all of PDF's search choices.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Confessor's first

let me just say "fuck yeah" to this

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I liked Iron Monkey, although everything I've read about them (never got a chance to see them play) suggests you "had to be there"

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

the five i would take to a desert island (or maybe a cave):

heartwork
alters of madness
scum
streetcleaner

latebloomer: Deutsch Bag (latebloomer), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Nice to see Hate Songs in E Minor getting some love. I wasn't too big on Wolverine Blues, but I liked the Hollowman EP. I can't remember if Left Hand Path was on Earache, but it has some choice stuff on it.

I'm surprised to see anyone touting Heartwork on this thread. Yikes. Maybe I should give it another try. I remember it being pretty good technically, but I couldn't get into the Maiden vibe at all.

I always thought of Bolt Thrower as an Earache band, but I guess they were on Combat in the U.S. They are definitely 'search'. Grindcrusher compilation is definitely search, as well.

Evanescence wasn't drum'n'bass at all. He used a lot of breakbeats back then, but they were just played as loops. It always reminded me of Satyricon-era Meat Beat Manifesto with less interesting drums. I still love it, though. Godflesh is the most classic thing to ever come from Earache IMHO.

baked beans (Royal Bed Bouncer), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Heartwork is a masterpiece!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

and yeah, the wolverine blues hate is sad to see. you should all be ashamed of yourselves. or all two of you anyway.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Wolverine Blues eats.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

who was that, entombed?

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

yikes, why? it's such a strong hard rocking record. you are all nutz.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

I never liked Entombed.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

i always loved entombed.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

since everyone already knows the old stuff, recent stuff that i dig:

first beecher album. not the new one though.

some of the code:breaker stuff is really cool for heavy crushing doom vibes. that zatokrev album really is a keeper.

municipal waste (dave witte + D.R.I. crossover fetishism)

mistress - in digust we trust (i'm in the minority i think on that metal thread in liking this, but i really really like it.)

usurper - cryptobeast (chicago old-tymey death)

confessor - unraveled (really great. so unique even after all these years.)

hate eternal - i, monarch

the new ackercocke (phil is right. no naked women on the cover, but it's a cool rekkerd.)

blood red throne - altered genesis(one of my fave eurodeath albums of this year.)

callisto - true nature unfolds (one of my fave neur/isis rips)

wolverine - the window purpose (cool proggy power metal)

and of the wicked world releases i dig: exmortem - nihilistic contentment, lost soul - chaostream, the chasm - the spell of retribution

and if you just want to abuse yourself, buy the new Berzerker album.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

those guitars. nobody does it for me in the guitar-tone area like entombed. except for katatonia.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

For guitar tone, for me, it's all about Grave and Decapitated. Grave are on Century Media, though. (Their Back From The Grave album was my first Voice review.)

I like the Berzerker. I saw them on that tour with Strapping Young Lad and Napalm Death a couple of years ago; their masks were hilarious.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

i still haven't made it all the way thru that new ephel duath album.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Wolverine Blues eats.

-- Ned Raggett

All 3 of you!

Then again I was never a fan of Entombed until that album. Im not exactly into death metal. It's probably the only album I did like in that genre.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I was afraid I'd get beat down if I said I dig the new Berzerker album! I think Earache's also got Severe Torture now, who I really like

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

The first Earache release I've purchased since probably the late 90s, is Hyatari's The Light Carriers, which is one of my favorite '05 releases.

baked beans (Royal Bed Bouncer), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

i still haven't made it all the way thru that new ephel duath album.

Them, Cirith Ungol and Shagrat just need to finally give in and do a Tolkien tour.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

The Hyatari album is indeed fantastic.

i still haven't made it all the way thru that new ephel duath album.

Them, Cirith Ungol and Shagrat just need to finally give in and do a Tolkien tour.

And The Lord Weird Slough Feg! as well?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Them, Cirith Ungol and Shagrat just need to finally give in and do a Tolkien tour.

Umm... Touring Middle Earth '06?

Josh Witkowski (braineater), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe someone hasn't mentioned BRUTAL TRUTH! Absolutely positively classic.

Also: the Grind Crusher compilation CD, which was my window into the world of Earache. From there, it was a short step to the "Campaign for Musical Destruction" (Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Carcass, Cathedral) tour-stop in New Haven, Connecticut.

Tony Bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

The new Deicide's supposed to be on Earache, innit?

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Watchmaker is on Earache now as well. I wasn't crazy about their recent album, but the first one they did is a blinder
