this is such a great song

ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes I don't know why everyone likes the later stuff better.

Keiko, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is good but it is also their most annoying song that is not about cars.

Dan I., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not nearly as annoying as Barbara Ann, I think you'll find.

clotion, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What am I saying? Help Me Rhonda less annoying than Student Demonstration Time? I DON'T THINK SO.

clotion, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh now you don't mean that.

JM, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i rekkin "wouldn't it be nice" is better.

di, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the langley schools music project version. such verve! such vivacity!

Sean, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Be True to Your School" is worse.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Student Demonstration Time" is my least favorite song ever!

Keiko, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit!

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Icky Icky Icky song. Yuck!

Joe, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love all those songs. Barbara Ann is clearly better, tho, and NONE of the car songs are annoying.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

its fucking awful. chorus sounds like yapping dogs. worst song though is probably their version of i was made to love her.

owen hatherley, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I am the only person who prefers the album version.

N., Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love be true to you school. and wendy too

gareth, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what kind of help is he hoping for from this Rhonda?

DV, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the version on "summer days and summer nights" best.

jel --, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he is wanting help in getting the coal out and selling it on the international market. ideally he would like some sort of subsidy

gareth, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, prefer single version. Beach Boys = alltime greatest band to initiate me into that whole music thing.

dleone, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the version on "summer days and summer nights" best.

You mean the album version? Like me? Hurrah, I'm not alone. Although if you're talking about the CD then that has the single version too so you may be being deliberately confusing.

one year passes...
I thougt it would be ok to revive this thread on a slow night.
There are two things about the number that I find lacking. First, the bridge is just rythm instruments. The piano player doesn't venture at all, and near it's end they bring in a squeaky-clean reverbed guitar (gotta be a Fender) that appears, rather cheaply, out of nowhere. Where was Brian in the editing of this one?

And then, of course, there's the dogs boww boww bowwing. (thanks Owen). I'm sure that at one time, I did enjoy this tune in it's elemental form, but would somebody just put on Trader, Leaving This Town, or Lookin' At Tomorrow? I would truly enjoy hearing someting different from my car radio. Am I asking too much? I think I already know the answer...

I can't listen to this song without thinking of the bootleg recordings of the sessions during which Brian pretty much kicks Murry out of the studio and what I assume to be the band as well. It's one of the more poignant moments of the Beach Boys' history, for sure.

As for the song itself.. I know it's very Dave Marsh of me, but I prefer the later stuff more, and I don't even consider it to be the best song on Today as it's no better than my two faves Do You Wanna Dance or Kiss Me, Baby.

maypang (maypang), Sunday, 29 February 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like this song and I have a lot of problems with pre pet sounds beach boys (and most post-smile beach boys as well). I think it must have been the first beach boys song I heard as a kid and that's why. Along with "Don't Worry Baby" and "In My Room" I think that these are the strongest BB songs before PS.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 29 February 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Since you put me down, there's been owls puking in my bed.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 29 February 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Love the song. Have memories as a kid riding on the subway when I spent the summer in NYC, and singing this song to myself.

dleone (dleone), Sunday, 29 February 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

And what's wrong with the "bow wow wow"ing? I love both versions equally.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 29 February 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Help me Rhonda vs Surfer Girl, anyone?

They're both immense, obviously.
