This is the official thread for discussing this Sublime Frequencies compilation. (More later.)

It's just so great to hear such a lot of material like this that I have never heard before. I have a few cassettes along these lines, but that's about it. Many of those contain slower passages or longer jams than what's here. I wish I could share more Saleh Abdel Gafor with you all, especially one of the live recordings that gets pretty crazy.

The song I was hoping would be on here was a different Abdel Gafor recording of "Ishlonak". (The one I linked to is a later recording I think, made in more than one language, presumably becaue of the popularity of the song beyond the Arabic world.)

I love the style of violin drone and soloing on a lot of these songs. It's so much more palatable to me than almost any use of the violin in the European classical tradition. (I'm not talking about the short "Toxic"-like violin parts that get repeated over and over again, but the sustained tones or the parts where the violinist goes off as a vocalist might.)

four weeks pass...
This has a lot of stuff that's similar, although I'm not sure any of it is Iraqi. (I think it's Lebanese and Syrian.)

(Shit, I thought there was at least one response on this thread from someone other than the thread starter. That's okay, at least I got an interesting e-mail out of it.)

seven years pass...

This is basically an Iraqi song I have been told (and definitely can hear it in the rhythms in certain parts):
