i need pop music tunes featuring Opera singers ....

they're usually most horrible.
and apart from that i can't think of any
[except for U2's Miss Sarajewo]

is there any listenable stuff ??
i've heard there's a Janet Jackson song - no idea which one
i am really in need of som help please.

oh and i'm not looking for the really obvious and nasty stuff like
the three tenors' christmas record etc.. or any Opera singer's
"pop" record.

i want genuine pop productions if possible , not cover versions
- unless they're really great of course.

thanks in advance

If your definition of "pop" includes Rammstein and your definition of "opera singers" includes opera samples, then I suggest "Sonne."

'is there a time for East 17' from 'Miss Sarajevo' is either Bono's best or worst lyric i can't decide.

Surely you can count Barcelona by Freddie Mercury and Monster Rat Cabernet?

Yesterday I saw Elton John on German telly doing a performance with an opera singer.

y'mean like Madame Butterfly or anything else of Malcom McLaren's Fans?

There's a real opera singer in the background at the end of Wilco's "Shot In The Arm" (I think it's that one) from Summerteeth. Subtle but increasingly noticeable, until it's the main sound in the song's extended final chord. But you have to wait through a lot of (pretty good) Wilco to get to it.

There's operatic-type singing (humorously) in the track "Pavaroty" on the Favela Booty Beats comp. If you are trying to assemble party music for opera types, I wouldn't miss that one.

Then there's Elvis Costello and Anne-Sophie von Otter.

And in the mid-late 80s every opera singer with any kind of following was recording albums of standards or musical comedy.

The Jan track is "This Time" from the janet. album. Kathleen Battle is the featured performer. It kinda blows, though.

I just listened to Malcolm McLaren's "Fans" recently, for the first time since the early 90's. This has NOT held up at all well IMHO.

Frank Zappa - Teenage Prostitute

Very listenable, though I don't know if it's "pop". More like Spike Jones meets mad rock'n'roll.

I was just going to say "Teenage Prostitute." Lisa Popeil, the soprano who sings on that track, is the daughter of Ron "Showtime Rotisserie" Popeil.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Friday, 16 December 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I've no idea who that is, but he's got an amazing name.

Ron Popeil was king of the late-night infomercials for a very long time. Rotisseries were among his many sale items.

But yeah, "Showtime Rotisserie" should be the title of the next Ludacris album.

Anti-Pop Consortium, "Mega"

I saw APC in Brooklyn after the release of the album that was on, and the woman who sang on Mega was there for the live performance of said track. It was impressive, especially since most people would skip performing that live, or just have that part sampled for the live show.

i have a live recording of the spice girls' 'viva forever' featuring luciano pavarotti. it is truly mind-boggling, he does nothing except some backing vox in the chorus which manage to drown out all five spice girls - one wonders what he did on stage during the verses - and at the song's climax poor deluded mel c decides it'd be a good idea to try and outsing him (she fails miserably). it all ends with mel b singing the last line REALLY REALLY LOW. i think it was for charity.
