She had a face like a cook I've seen
in the kitchen of the Angler Hotel
See her in the city virgin
She's friendly and you know her well

A thousand odd broken stallions
still very quick on their feet
(?)...all you can eat

We're drawing up the plans for the city
Filled with ten thousand crooked stairs
Some lead up to heaven
Some look through you like you're not even there

Could it be that I see you when I cut across the park
walking along with a hound
When I look at myself in the shower I wonder will she see what I see
Will she like what she has found

I rolled out from under the engine
and I saw her standing there
I knew right then I could love her forever
even when her breasts are rotted with cancer

I wonder where she went when she said go
A sailor has to masturbate until the ship lands
A lot of things happen out on the open sea
I'm gonna sail Arizona to Japan

I'm drawing up the plans for the city
Filled with ten thousand crooked stairs
Some lead up to heaven
Some look through you like you're not even there

But a place to be shut in
And hide from the light of the world"

This is London, not Antarctica, so why don't the tubes run all night,
You are my Girlfriend, not Molly Ringwald, so why won't you stay here tonight,
This is sixth form poetry not Keats or Yeats, and now we find the part that we both hate.

We love the city because it lets us down, We love the city NOT the suburbs that surround.
We love all the dirty things, that lead us to think, that maybe true love could be found.
We love the city because its how we live, We love the city cause it never loves us back.
We love it all because sometimes, even though they're hard to find, it contains all the virtues we lack.

I am intrigued, not merely curious as to why it takes so long to change your mind.
I am competent, not merely adequate, its impossible for me to be unkind.
This is embarrassing, not merely awkward and I have ignored much greater feelings

We can hold those aspirations down with bad luck and half hearted frowns,
But fear alone will never bring us down, that can only happen in the small towns,

And if you don't love me now, if you don't love me now, if you don't love me, then you can't have me, you can't have me now.

"Cities" by The Talking Heads

Think of London, a small city

It's dark, dark in the daytime
The people sleep, sleep in the daytime
If they want to, if they want to

I'm checking them out
I'm checking them out
I got it figured out
I got it figured out
There's good points and bad points
Find a city
Find myself a city to live in.

There are a lot of rich people in Birmingham
A lot of ghosts in a lot of houses
Look over there!...A dry ice factory
A good place to get some thinking done

Down el Paso way things get pretty spread out
People got no idea where in the world they are
They go up north and come back south
Still got no idea where in the world they are.
Did I forget to mention, to mention Memphis
Home of Elvis and the ancient greeks
Do I smell? I smell home cooking
It's only the river, it's only the river.

POX: King Crimson songs about madness/violence in New York City

"Thela Hun Gingeet"

I remember hearing that "Indian Summer Sky" by U2 is about crime in NYC, but I can't for the life of me remember the lyrics, so that's quite possibly a steaming load of fish poop.

"Hung Again," "Two at a Time" and several others by Brooklyn's Cop Shoot Cop

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

"Back in New York City" by Genesis,....although there's a lot of porcupine imagery in said tune, and I've never encountered a single porcupine in my 38 years of living in NYC, so it's quite possibly that Peter Gabriel was tripping off his gourd at the time of said tune's composition, and not really singing about NYC at all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

"The Camer Eye" by Rush...about London and New York, actually.
