I WANT THE ANN ARBOR TICKETS ONLINE RIGHT NOW

Seriously. Can I just go to the Blind Pig and ask them for tickets, if I cant get them online?

DKJDJKJ, Friday, 16 December 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

WTF is an Asheville, NC?

It's ok. Grey Eagle is a short walk from the Swannanoa River in a delapidated part of Asheville that was flooded two years ago by hurricanes Frances and Ivan. There's train tracks, abandonded warehouses and buildings taken over by local artists (paint, ceramics, metal sculpture), a ghetto up the road, homeless men, awesome graffiti, everything you could possibly want near a Silver Jews show. The venue itself is a particular brand of classy-yuppie-ish-but-not-trying-too-hard that's common to Asheville and one of its strengths in my opinion. Wood construction, a decent PA, modest stage, a Southern Louisiana resturaunt, and a ton of beer and wine. Buy cigarettes before you get to the venue. Don't get lost; it's likely only about 20% of the attendence will live in Asheville. Don't scare the hippies.

See you in Chicago, Silver Jews!

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:34 (twenty years ago)

What's funny is that I bought the Web Hall tickets way in advance, and now I'm moving to Washington D.C. This weekend.

Oh well. That's what the Chinatown Bus is for, right?

Baltimore tix still available?

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

the group i'm going in may have an extra one - if they're sold out just gimme a howdy

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Idiotically bought tickets for both Charlottesville and 1st night at Webster Hall (not realizing they were one day after the other); if anyone's got fun and fancy plans to drive to Virginia from NYC, drop a line, otherwise it's going to be a hilarious odyssey.

mike powell (mike powell), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

there's always craigslist...

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

So, uh, should I buy a Bmore ticket (and it looks like there are some available), anyone know how possible it would be to get back to D.C. after the show without a car? The MARC train seems to stop running at 10.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Question about Ann Arbor:
The web site says something about tickets still being available at the "8 ball salloon." Does that mean it's sold out otherwise? Do I have to be 21 to get tickets to the 8 ball salloon?

I'm moving to DC this weekend. I'll be in Colubmia Heights, though the nature of my job is such that I can do it anywhere there's a highspeed internet connection (not that I'd want to bring a laptop to a show, but that's the life I've chosen).

Email me if this is an offer of... well, whatever the hell it's an offer of. I'm fairly open-minded.

Good a place to post this as any:

Bob Will Be Wife-Shopping (Plenty-to-Go-Round)
Wed Jan 18, 2006 07:52

Hello my e-friends,

I wanted to let the ladies of the nation in on the ground floor of a wonderful opportunity. In all the years of Pavement, Bob never slept with a groupie. It's true. Do I really have to finish this paragraph? Any woman who walks up to Bob, during the months of March and April, merely has to say "I want to rip your clothes off" and she will be quickly serviced by an older, wiser bob nastanovich.

Also the touring band is as follows:
me, cassie, tony crow, brian kotzur, william tyler, and peyton pinkerton. Bob will be drummming on his songs.
Steve West is our soundman.

We sure did have a good time at the Music City Bowl.

Another reason for this tour is it's a way to let everyone know that I can't stand being called 'Dave.' People do it freely, and I just think it's time I spoke up.

At www.toddlincoln.com there is a pretty great video of punks in the beerlight made by todd lincoln.
Not mary todd lincoln. Made by todd lincoln.

Finally I'd like to thank everyone for their birthday cards and if you've written since October, I'm getting to those soon.

with remarkable love, David

Question about Ann Arbor:

They don;t have any more apparently. The guy said they might get some more next week. Another guy told me they no longer sell tickets there and you must go through ticketmaster. why does everyone who works there have to suck so much?

I listened to the Atlanta show last night, which assuaged some fears that the show would be an embarrassment; happy w/ the setlist, too.

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:54 (twenty years ago)

dudes baltimore was fuckin superlative. like, seriously, wow - not even in an endearingly shambly way, in a "that was a legitimately great show right there" way. nothing against endearingly shambly, you understand.

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Thursday, 23 March 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

After seeing one of the Webster Hall shows, I think you're lying.

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I attended the first Webster Hall show, and the Tuesday show in Philadelphia. Both shows were terrific, and the band was on top of things. No shambling at all (not that I would have minded, either. I can enjoy the shamble thing, too). I have heard that the second Webster Hall show wasn't as good as the first, but I didn't attend that one, so I can't say.

James, Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

xp - while that's generally a safe bet, in this case it's untrue - they were great. my friend who's gone to the last five shows said last night's was by far the best of them, and although i can't compare it to any of the others i'm inclined to agree. those songs fuckin shimmered.

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

it was, indeed, a fantastic show.

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Thursday, 23 March 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

you were there last night, raymond? howd you like it?

me and alex and "pyjamagrama" were on that little step/seat in the back on the balcony side.

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

the athens show was incredible. jacobo from what i can tell berman was getting a kick out of performing (he was still getting his sea legs when i saw him) so i suspect this isn't a one time thing.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

i loved the first webster hall show. berman seemed in reasonably good spirits (for berman) and he seemed appreciative of the audience response. i'm glad he decided to do the encore; but if he didn't, that'd be ok too.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

second Webster Hall show was weak from what I saw (3 songs, one of which they stopped short and started again)...I arrived at 10:15 and they were already doing the encore, what the fuck is that?

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's why i missed the friday show. it's because webster has to kick the indie kids out to get the dance kids in at 11.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

the SJ set at the first WH show started a couple of minutes before 9. and that was with two opening acts.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

i ended up singing 'random rules' at karaoke afterwards and lemme tell you - silver jews = GREAT karaoke fodder. best working lyricist in rock probably.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

the wareham/britta cover of that is lovely.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I saw both NYC shows; Berman seemed looser/happier at the second one. The first show was a little tense; after they did their "staged" encore bit, people kept shouting for them to come back. The shouting kinda turned into boos, which was really weird, I thought.

mike powell (mike powell), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

i didn't hear any booing... if i did it wasn't genuine.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

"They're saying 'Boo-erman', sir."

dougfacedhermans, Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Wow.

I was at the first Webster Hall show, and it was pretty torturing, definitely the worst show I've seen in the past six months. The 2nd encore was pretty much the only redeeming thing I can remember; in fact, if the whole show had that intensity (and had Berman that relaxed), the show could've been amazing. Berman looked like he was on the verge of a panic attack the whole show, vocals sounded neither smooth nor "rough," just blah, he did a fabulous job engaging with the audience by reading his lyrics off of a lyrics stand, and he may or may not have had his guitar plugged in - couldn't really tell.

It's perfectly understandable that the show was bad, AND understandable that people would have a great time. Fuck, I had a great time just b/c I finally got to see him live, but I'd expect to be slapped if I said it were a good show. It was a horrendous show.

Still love Berman, though, and still think he's the best lyricist of the past ten years. And if Silver Jews keep performing, I think they could have some great live shows.

"i ended up singing 'random rules' at karaoke afterwards and lemme tell you - silver jews = GREAT karaoke fodder. best working lyricist in rock probably."

OTMizzle.

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Thursday, 23 March 2006 23:18 (twenty years ago)

where can you do random rules at karaoke...i would love to do that

douglas eklund (skolle), Friday, 24 March 2006 01:33 (twenty years ago)

here:

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 24 March 2006 07:53 (twenty years ago)

I thought the Baltimore show was a mixed bag in that (a) Berman is not a natural performer and (b) the band was AWESOME but too damned loud, to the extent that it was difficult to hear Cassie and David well...and when you could hear them they went out of tune a lot (or so it seemed to me, anyway). Crowd was into it the whole time, which made up for the problems somehow. Also: I WAS LIKE 10-15 FEET TO THE RIGHT OF NAST WHILE HE WAS DRUMMING HOW COOL IS THAT?

I'm really, really glad I saw the show -- a once-in-a-lifetime thing (hopefully not, but you know). Set was HEAVY on T.Numbers and N. Bridge, less so on the other records. Nothing from the Arizona Record; they played a song I'd never heard before but I can't remember the details or lyrics.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 March 2006 12:48 (twenty years ago)

what do you mean by "step/seat" pssst? do you mean that you were the dudes sitting on a table near the drummer? because if that's so i was standing right behind you!!!!

(I was the 6'5 tall black guy with glasses wearing all blue, you may have seen me)

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 March 2006 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Suzy, Berman was super uneasy at the Balti show too -- I think he's getting used to touring and crowds and stuff.

Once my review runs, I'll post a link to this thread.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 March 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

(also, and totally unrelated to the Silver Jews = Ottobar bartender ladies are SMOKIN’)

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 March 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Raymond, we were at the back of the floor to the left of the sound booth near the steps to the balcony. Actually, I have to say Berman seemed very comfortable to me, like he was really having fun. He's not exactly going to be Mr. Onstage Energy, but he looked pretty into it to me.

The band was loud, yeah, and didn't let the vocals completely dominate , but I thought that was appropriate for a live show and very in keeping with the "Silver Jews as rock band" theme of the tour. Very Rolling Thunderized.

(And yes, you are correct in yr assessment of bartender ladies).

Here's a vid of "trains across the sea" from the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYLgB2cGaA8

Saw the second of the London gigs last night. The sound was atrocious. Lyrics completely unintelligible. Band seemed to be have a good time. The audience wanted a second encore, but no dice. Hope the Scotland shows are better.

me too!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 23:24 (twenty years ago)

My friend got the set list off the sound guy (someone from Pavement?). We then went to a pub in Angel and saw, of all people, Crispin Mills. Good times.

Also, did you go in the VIP area? (You could just walk in.) It was almost empty because it's behind a foot of glass so you can't hear the music, but it has the best view in the house. Most odd venue.

caek (caek), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

oh, I didn't go to the london ones but I hope the scotland ones are better. only going to tomorrow night's, now, though

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 27 April 2006 06:15 (twenty years ago)

I was standing pretty close to one of the speakers and could hear the lyrics OK... someone else already complained about the sound, though, I guess I was just lucky

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 27 April 2006 07:48 (twenty years ago)

i thought the sound was okay, the show was great, i was braced for a huge anticlimax but no it was better than i'd dared hoped, the response was pretty much raptuous also.
