Anyone know anything about the new Quasi? Has it leaked yet? I think it has a March street date. Can't wait.

there's an advance track here: http://www.tgrec.com/news/detail.php?id=123

pinder (pinder), Saturday, 17 December 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I liked the last album OK, but he really has got to bring back the Rocksichord. That track there sounds decent...nice piano, a bit experimental, but Quasi isn't Quasi for me without the Rocksichord.

I want a new quasi album.

Stephen C (ihope), Saturday, 17 December 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I want a new quasi album too.

Where's the love for Quasi? Isn't anyone else excited? other than pinder, patrick, stephen, and marybeth? I want a new quasi album too!

michelleh, Saturday, 31 December 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

It's gonna have to be all kinds of good to win me back after Hot Shit

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 31 December 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

Saw Quasi in Portland last night. The new ones gonna burn.

juno crunch, Saturday, 31 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Hot Shit is one of my all time favorites.

michelleh, Saturday, 31 December 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

So this has leaked? What's the word? Good? Rocksichord?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Monday, 2 January 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Haven't seen it anywhere. From what I heard live, this ones gonna be amazing.

juno crunch, Monday, 2 January 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Hm, pretty disappointing. Along the lines of Hot Shit, but more raw and jammy. It has sort of a 70s vibe and some of it surprisingly doesn't go anywhere. The middle of the album is especially weak. And no, still no Rocksichord.

I think the first two tracks are great, so I was disappointed that it dropped off after those ones.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

i like this record. sounds like they dropped a cat on a piano during some of the songs but thats my stylee.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I really didn't like Hot Shit or Sword of God, so I might not even download this.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Maria, see I like the tracks with the crazy piano playing (i.e. tracks 1 and 2, especially), but a lot of it just sounds like a jam session.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Monday, 6 February 2006 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Finally heard it and it blew me away. Very powerful. They're still on top of the game and trying to take a sledgehammer to the ills that confront our sad society. Only wished for more songs. I imagine a lot of people will have a hard time with it however due to its confrontational nature. It's very dark.

gerardmonchichi, Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

What about musically though? I feel like Coomes has taken a bit of a step back on some of the tracks. Tracks 5, 6, 7 especially sound a bit 2-dimensional and not very fleshed out to me. I mean, Quasi is one of my favorite bands of the past decade, so I want to like this, but some of this sounds a bit tossed off. I like the little Eastern guitar riff on "Poverty Sucks."

By the way, are Janet's vox supposed to sound so flat on that part of "Merry Xmas"?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

It's sad when the Flaming Lips thread has more debate, love, and support than this one when Quasi's When the Going Gets Dark is leagues beyond AWWTM. And they're both political albums, right? Anyways, Coomes creates another masterpiece. Powerful to say the least. Recording sounds great. Works as a whole and rocks harder than anything I've heard in years. Amazing musicians. Album of the year.

green jeans, Monday, 13 February 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Is green jeans part of Quasi's street team? ;)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

poly,
why does someone who likes an album have to be questioned/claimed as part of a street team? Can't someone just like the record and want to share their like? I for one, am not part of any street team, but post my likes on ILM. I do like the new Quasi quite a bit. Will buy it and tell others to buy it. They're awesome live, and I luv Janet. It's also an album that I like the more that I listen to it.

marybeth, Monday, 13 February 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

green jeans, I'm one of Quasi's biggest fans, but this one is just leaving me a bit cold. I think I've decided that I like the overall sound better than Hot Shit, but there is some serious unnevenness in songwriting. Why was that "Presto-Chargo" song left on there?

And somebody please tell me WHY DID SAM STOP USING THE ROCKSICHORD. I think it would fit very well with the sound of the album.

I keep finding myself going back to "Alice the Goon." That's classic Quasi, and his dynamic vox are great.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

The ;) indicates that I was just kidding.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Also, I think he could have sprinkled some more piano throughout the album. I read that he thought of this album as "neoclassical" or something, by which he meant like nu-'70s. But with Quasi you can actually go back to classical and go crazy with the piano, which Sam does brilliantly on some of the tracks.

It's just thos riffy, sludgey half-song "jams" that are getting under my skin.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't see the problem with the midsection. which songs are jammy?
definitely has the improv feel. pretty intense such that i find presto chango somewhat refreshing. amazing drum sounds on that one. and it signifies the shift in the middle towards some sort of reconciliation of the issues brought up in the first half. flips to the other side of the coin if u will. im constantly impressed by coomes mind and music.

juno crunch, Tuesday, 14 February 2006 02:56 (twenty years ago)

The guitar playing and solo on "Invisible Star" are awesome.

The midsection tracks just aren't quite as engaging, musically. Not sure how else to explain it. "Beyond the Sky," for instance, doesn't quite reach its potential, and ends up being a quasi-song, lol.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:14 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Where's the love for this album and, more importantly, this band!?

I loved Hot Shit so it's not surprising that this one's a keeper for me.
