I can't find any information on this whatsoever. I'd love to see them or Boris on tour.

I saw Khanate live, and well... it's one thing to like the recorded music, but the live show was hideously boring. It was really terrible. It had some novelty appeal in the sense that you appreciated the fact that you were witnessing something interesting, but that wore off very quickly. I don't know how Sunn O))) is live, but I'd guess it's a similar experience.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 18 December 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

should I go see them in Connecticut on Tuesday? It's about an hour away.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Sunday, 18 December 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

you might want to bring a joint or something in case seeing them sober doesnt do it for you

Mickey is waaaaayyy OTM here; and weed doesn't really help for khanate. just makes it painful.

for sunn, boring is kinda the point i think?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 18 December 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine any drug that would have made that show entertaining. I mean, maybe certain ones like ecstacy would have made it fun in the sense that I would have left the building and done something better like chase cars down the street.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 18 December 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

i think weed made khanate worse for me, actually. just... so... boring... so... arrrghhhhhh!!!!*!()@*#)!(FJ

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 18 December 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Khanate are really good to listen to whil you lift weights at the gym. Try it, it works . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 18 December 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

what is the gym?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 18 December 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

well that certainly was a...thing.

how were nachtmystium, daerest baltimor-ean, -ite, -on?

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Sunday, 18 December 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

missed 'em completely and only saw half of hidden hand (who were "trying out new material on the road" = uh oh). sunn were...kinda boring. i mean, you got the "full body massage" effect and occasionally when sitting or leaning against the wall it gave you the funny feeling in your mid-section. but it didn't build to anything and likewise there wasn't really any kind of hypnosis that set it. (ha ha every time their smoke machines went off it made this little "tssh" that sounded like someone dinging a ride cymbal to start a count and, you know, start a song finally.) they had some duder singer with 'em in full corpsepaint regalia which didn't add much to the proceedings. the only bright spot, once the smoke cleared out a little (seriously i thought i was in the middle of some MTA terrorist drill) is this insane local kid who also showed up at the hototogisu show a few weeks ago and who has basically told himself that he can "do butoh dancing" and so stripped down to a thong and did "living statue" poses throughout the show. not exactly joe preston or peter rehberg but whaddya gonna do? still wanna see khanate tho!

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 December 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

In the haze of shows I went to in 2005 seeing Boris and Sunn0))) was a fog shrouded highlight.

harshaw (jube), Sunday, 18 December 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

haha I love the zany characters you find at shows like that. At Acid Mothers Temple there was a girl who spent about an hour straight spinning in curcles while doing hoola-hoop dancing. where do people come up with these ideas?

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 18 December 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

and dub plate style, expect Khanate to be worse than Sunn O))). Imagine the same thing, but no fog machine or band members in any sort of interesting costume. Just guys standing there who basically stare at the floor the entire time they play.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 18 December 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

and also don't say a single spoken word the entire show. after about an hour of playing, they just out of nowhere stop, put down their instruments and walk away. it's like they're not even trying! they seemd like the most bored people there

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 18 December 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I must dissent. I saw Khanate at Tonic some time ago and have nothing but positive memories. Pure agony, just like listening to Things Viral at a volume your home stereo could never achieve.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 19 December 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

"positive memories" "pure agony"

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 19 December 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

i have actually heard more bad things than good about khanate live, but i'm just curious.

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 December 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

earth was REALLY boring when i saw them.

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 December 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

on a bright note, this thread is making me want to buy a Sunn O))) album. don't ask why. I really want to like this stuff.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 19 December 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

you should've gone to the show and purchased the 2 disc vrsn of Black1 that you won't be able to find otherwise. *cries self into ash, like Wrest said*

when Malefic took the stage at the church, it was the hail satan moment of the (war on) xmas season.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 19 December 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

you are talking about a unitarian church though. they would probably ask him to give the sermon on sunday.

if you're in the uk they'll be playing in february. with earth no less. glasgow show is the 12th.

Where is the ABC2? I expect i'll go to that.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

ABC2 is the old ABC Cinema (hence the name) in Sauchiehall Street.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Never been in it. Not really familiar with Sauchiehall St . Apart from The Garage. I never even shop up there. Is it before you reach the pedestrian bit?(coming from Charing X past the garage )

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes, between pedestrian bit and the Garage - McLellan Galleries/Art School/CCA area. Only opened this year. Nice venue, but the sound was a bit iffy in the upstairs bit (ABC2 - the downstairs venue is just called ABC).

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Well should be easy enough to find by car. Thats the main thing.
Thanks Ailsa!

Who did you see there?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Architecture in Helsinki. There's a thread, somewhere.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I couldnt make it to the High On Fire gig at the ABC2 in August(saw them before and after that though) and I was told that the sound was really bad.
Heard that about a few gigs there.
Would've been better at the G2 i think. Saw Isis there and it was great.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

T. Weiss, I was at the Asheville, NC show.

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

i saw the show @ middle east upstairs last night. for me it was one of the top 5 shows of the year, but then again i *LIKE* near-static music, especially when coupled with excessive volume and some sort of ritual...

there was something just so gratifying about 200 people packed like sardines in a small room, everyone wearing black hoodies (EVERYONE!) eyes closed in pitch blackness, while an oren ambarchi tape piece played through the mains for like 20 minutes before the band even went on stage... not a word spoken by anyone, just pure deference.

the economy of gesture on display was highly impressive - 90 minutes and a total of 57 notes (i counted!) 3 guys in black graduation robes (without the hats/tassels) - 2 guitar and bass/moog - and yeah the corpsepaint singer came out and just BREATHED into 45 seconds in reverb for 20 minutes at the end while the moog player queued up this really nice and almost rhythmic filtered white noise/lfo sound that came across like a lost eliane radigue piece.

well, needless to say i was and remain entirely impressed. if you're impatient or are just unwilling to submit, it's probably going to be a tough concert. but otherwise... pretty damn colossal...

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 9 October 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

The London gig was good. Crowdwise Some Metalers, some hipsters, and some people in business suits (Frieze connection perhaps?). The volume of Sunn0))) was really strange, seemingly constant I thought to myself "this is quite loud"... as soon as I left the venue my ears felt like they had been stuffed with cotton wool, almost complete deafness! The cellist and moog-ist were inaudible to my ears tho.

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

These reviews make me wish I'd bothered with this - I saw them in Islington earlier in the year, but this sounds sufficiently different.

This seems as good a place to ask as any - I keep listening to "La Mort Noir dans Esch Alzette" and the Black One bonus disc (downloaded, obv) but haven't realy heard anything else by them. What else should I go for?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Do you want more creeping ambient type stuff or pulverising drone metal?

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

both, i guess! i find the former good to work to, the latter exciting once in a while. the trouble is that they have too many releases for me to be systematic.

i guess recommendations of albums by anyone else would be good too (although i've eg heard some khanate and didn't love it).

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't like Khanate eh? They're a bit heavy going certainly. White 2 is good for the ambient stuff, especially tracks 2 and 3. What's the Black one bonus disk like btw (only heard the main album- kind of shorter track than usual, pretty heavy most of the time with lots of ambiently refracte death rattle vox in the background)?

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

It's not a million miles away from that, but it's two longer (20 min ish) tracks. Sorry, I'm very bad at describing this stuff! Thanks for the White 2 suggestion, will give that a go.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

The bonus cd is a live recording featuring Oren Ambarchi amongst others.
The La Mort Noir dans Esch Alzette is a recording of a live gig on aprils euro tour. Features Malefic on vocals. It's prob my fave sunn 0))) release. Was lucky enough to be able to buy one from Southern Lord when they went on sale to forum members.
Did I mention that I bought a Live White at sundays gig? £30 for 2 cdrs! (ouch) but a third of the ebay price and the music on it is great. Was just happy to finally get one.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and did anyone at the london gig buy this?

There was only 10 left by the time it got to the UK and they all sold in London at £100 each.

Look how much profit that seller got.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know what's sadder, the pure greed of putting a buy-it-now of $666.00 for that box set or the fact that some chump actually coughed up the change.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wow, Sunn were SO GOOD at ATP, even before Anderson lamped O'Malley.

Mister Craig, Thursday, 13 December 2007 08:12 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty damn good at the Forum also, although the collaboration with Boris proved to be the highlight - massive titanic waves of glacial sonic rumble transporting one to meditative states where time was an irrelevance and experience could only be measured in terms of bass frequencies coarsing through the floor and body. I could have watched that shit forever. There was a slightly weird vibe on stage, a bit like "lets get this over with" which was all explained when I returned home to my internets. The ending to the ATP show sounds amazingly harsh: three or four vintage Sunn Beta Leads crashing to the floor and the sound of valves shattering through that massive PA must be something else.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I was a lurker (of chalice) only. That place made ILM look sane!

myopic_void, Monday, 17 December 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Only because of Doom Dom!

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 17 December 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

It seems quite drastic to remove the whole forums. If it's a permanent thing then that's a real shame, as there was a lot of good discussion and information and community there, along with a whole lot of bitching, moaning and arsehole-ish behaviour, of course.

krakow, Monday, 17 December 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

Well, check the emails you signed up with. Goat Shed II is happening with same log in details as the SL board.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 17 December 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

Completely rubbis that they've pulled the forums - had a good mix of people: the metal heads, droners, noise dudes, etc. It's very rum of them to pull it without any notice to the community that grew up around it.

...maybe Mr. Doom Dom should post on ILX...

Rombald, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh god don't say that!

and head over to the new forum. Doom Dom is maybe getting his own area.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

ILX wouldn't know what's hit it if he posted here.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

I read the board fairly regularly and it's great for upfront info on new stuff coming out and just people who know their stuff generally but some of the shit people talk on there is mindblowing. Like if ILM had a rap thread that even remotely resembled any rap thread you ever read on there there'd be like a Jonestown of bannings before you knew it. (I realise you don't go to the Southern Lord forum to get RAPOPINIONS4U, but even so.)

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 07:13 (eighteen years ago)

I never usually read those threads but there's some real genuine hip-hop heads on SL. But if it's anything like the rnb thread that was on there once, there's probably people moaning that it doesn't belong on SL. But most people would tell that kind to STFU. It's the fact anything is discussed is what keeps people there and so enjoyable.
Plus on the new forum(same login details as before) DV says zero-tolerance on wankers. So it should be even better.

It's moved to a permanent site now
http://www.foreverdoomed.com/ same username and passwords as the SL site. And the bonus is everyone lost their post count so you cant see how much time you wasted :)

The disappearance of the SL board means I've forgotten what the name of the next live album was supposed to be, so I'm having trouble googling to work out what it's called/when it's due out. Does anyone know? I remember it was recorded in a cathedral - maybe Bergen?

twelve years pass...

Anyone who's into both Sunn O))) and the 33 1/3 books might be into Lee Klein's Neutral Evil ))). It's not a 33 1/3, and it's not about a record of theirs, but it is the same physical dimensions of a 33 1/3, and it's 109 pages of modern autofiction about/around the author's experience seeing them live, and the live show is sort of the band's real record anyway. Plus, Lee is a swell dude who may or may not be the same one who started this thread.
