Beating Siouxsie & Liz Fraser in a single bound!

She wasn't a whiny fat bitch.

Siouxsie wins.

BLONDE = ANTI-BLACK + HAVING MORE FUN = SO NOT GOTH

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 18 December 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

You're a scholar and a gent, Sundar, but: Nico had fun??

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Sunday, 18 December 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

her nickname was Funzo

MARBLE INDEX = FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

(It just seems like it should be a matter of principle. If you're making a run for Queen of Goth, invest in a can of hair dye, will ya?)

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 18 December 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

I can't decide if the notes to the CD of The Marble Index are brilliant or just dippy.

"In 1963, in a meeting of perfect early-Sixties hairstyles, she had a son by the French movie heartthrob Alain Deon".

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 18 December 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

i like the despairing last-man-on-earth tone of this question

robert smith started goth with 'faith' and ended goth with 'disintergration'.

retroboy, Sunday, 18 December 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

*sigh* Nico is so much better than the total output of Goth...

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Sunday, 18 December 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

You should all go read Nico: Songs They Never Play On The Radio. It's one of the best rock n roll books ever written . . . about Nico and it's very, very funny.

Was Nico goth? No. Goth-ic, yes, Teutonic almost certainly, but not goth.

Siouxsie isn't a goth either - she was punk all the way but with a gothic sensibility. Juju may have been the template for most goth albums that came after, but the Banshees moved their sound onto other things.

klee, Monday, 19 December 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

bbbut I thought Ned was the queen of goth!

*runs and hides*

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 December 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

'Songs they never play on the radio' seconded. So funny given the subject matter. Kills a bit the Nico mystique but hey-hee-ho..

does anyone know if there will be a US release of Rhino's Nico: The Frozen Borderline 1968-1970 2cd set?

Well I doubt it, but who cares, I bought the import and I'm a happy camper and who cares. Because she is still the queen of goth and if you say Siouxsie is, then we'll have to take this outside the pub.

Bimble, Sunday, 22 April 2007 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god, do you hear that part in the demo of "You Are Beautiful (Afraid}" at the end where she kindof laughs and says "it's just a demo!" That just kills me. Not as holy as Kate Bush, but I make a hearth for her anyway and get down on my knees just the same. Staggering.

Bimble, Sunday, 22 April 2007 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'm reading Songs They Never Play On The Radio at the moment, thanks to recommendations from this thread, and I must say I'm really enjoying it. In fact, though I've been reading music books on the bus to and from work for the last year, including several about other musical topics I would have considered a bit dearer to me than Nico, this is honestly the only one I've found it so difficult to put down I've wanted to read when I get home, too. In some ways I hate the cynicism in which it's written, but the writing style and the way it's told is utterly enthralling. It could be all fiction and I don't think I'd care. The irony of it is that musical material from the tour described is actually some of my fave Nico stuff: the Femme Fatale compilation CD, although I'm quite prepared to believe that some of the shows they did were as bad as the author says.

Did anyone ever see her live ever? Please speak.

Bimble, Saturday, 28 April 2007 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

It almost seems like more from the cookie jar than I should be allowed to be able to read that book at the same time as having this brand new Frozen Borderline CD, too.

Surely I'll get Nico cavities from all this candy.

Bimble, Saturday, 28 April 2007 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

As an aside, I have the leaked demo of Jeff Buckley/Liz Fraser doing "All Flowers in Time" and at the end of it she laughs her head off and says "oh, GAWD" like she was completely disgusted with her singing. It is awesomely adorable.

Trayce, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

You're kidding! I haven't heard that! What the hell? I thought I'd got all the unofficial Buckley stuff out there! Is it on s1sk???

Bimble, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

I found it on some guys website, I can email it to you if you like (does yr ILX webmail link work?)

Trayce, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

yep it does, thanks!

Bimble, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

I sent a mail, dunno if it worked.

Trayce, Saturday, 28 April 2007 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

It worked, Trayce.

And I went out tonight and rented all three of the videos of Nico I could find at the local video shop and I am a happy goddamn camper.

Bimble, Saturday, 28 April 2007 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

I can't help it. I know...junkies, bad stuff...sin...horror...

But she's my own private David Bowie.

The Buckley/Fraser is really jaw-droppingly amazing, 'tis true.

I really like the remix of "Reich Der Traume"...normally I would shun such updating of the past, but it somehow brings her into the present, as though she were still alive. And I think that song is fair game, not being on any of her proper albums.

SHE IS STILL THE QUEEN OF GOTH BETTER BELIEVE IT

Listen to "Valley Of The Kings" off The End and then tell me David Bowie has a goddamn thing on her.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 2 August 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

Back in the 70's, though, David Bowie had his thing on quite a few people.

moley, Saturday, 2 August 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

Yes he wrote Heroes for her, didn't he?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 2 August 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

I can't believe I'm listening to "The End". It's the one album of hers I never, ever play. And it sounds bloody fantastic.
