Billy Idol's CYBER PUNK: Was he on to something?

Because listen, I've been sitting at this computer, typing. For what seems to be a week.

Hear me out, you know when people are so far ahead of their time that their output gets panned? Perhaps this is the case? I mean, if I had the choice I'd be wearing leather pants and living in a world that looked like Wipeout XL, dude, FUCKING SIGN ME UP.

Also, what's wrong with that version of Heroin? What really is "bad" or "good" when it comes to taste? And isn't this around the time that BI appeared in Oliver "Ding Dong" Stone's "The Doors"? It's not like that guy is just picking people off the street for his epics!

My point: YOU'RE LOOKING AT THIS ON A COMPUTER, YOU PROBABLY HAVE A CELL PHONE, YOU ARE A CYBER PUNK. Dude right on!

'websurfing' should be called 'cyberpunking'

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 18 December 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

As long as it's got nothing to do with that smug dick Kutchner I'm down wid that.

The Wanderers' Wandering Daughter (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 December 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Was in around the same time he had dreadlocks ? that outpunked cyberpunk...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 19 December 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, we was a visionary on par with the makers of "Hackers".

I'd almost completely wiped the memory of that movie from my brain. Thanks for nothing, Kim.

Josh Witkowski (braineater), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I liked it when he admitted that he'd never managed to finish a William Gibson book. To give him his due, he did start some though.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Dunno if he was on to something, but he most certainly must have been on something...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Ahem.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

oh man... a few years ago you could view the "interactive contents" of the cyberpunk album on the website of "electronic hollywood" - the developer who created it for billy - converted to shockwave. the main screen looked like this... http://www.exhibitresearch.com/kevin/nyc/levy/punk2.gif - a little more info here: http://www.exhibitresearch.com/kevin/nyc/levy/

chr1sb0y (chr1sb0y), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, when he put that album out in 1983, it certainly was groundbreaking.

Oh, wait, it was 1993. Never mind.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik was more ahead of the curve than Billy Idol.

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

who remembers BLAM! and Necro Enema Amalgamated?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 19 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

The cover of "Heroin" on this album was ill-advised as well...

Edward Bax (EdBax), Monday, 19 December 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

converted to shockwave. the main screen looked k-lame.

Elyte. I was a cyberpunk before he was punk, I was one before him.

George the Animal Steele, Monday, 19 December 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)
