man, i don't dig that list at all. what are "Dear Summer" and "Kilos" doing on there????

yuengling participle (rotten03), Monday, 19 December 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

It sez it's mostly singles with a few album and mixtape cuts thrown in.

Having Cage and Busdriver on here and no AZ, Black Rob or "window shopper" is unacceptable but understandable since Noz is a nerd-rap loving backpacker at heart.

ELLI$, Monday, 19 December 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

where's "laffy taffy"?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 December 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

"Dear Summer" counts as a single, they played it all over. Too bad its ... not so good. I like this list because i don't know all the songs. "Laffy Taffy" is a weird omission but not critical.

Beanie Sigel f/ Grand Puba & Sadat X

Er, what?

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

it bears a striking resemblence to pitchfork's (except there's no freak-folk at number one)

corey c (shock of daylight), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

C, Its on Beanie's album from this year. It's very good.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that Beanie track is fantastic, as is Purple Rain. Deej, did you get the feeling that a lot of people slept on that album?

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the Beanie was that slept on, I know a lot of people that liked it, it ended up on the year end lists of a couple different publications I write for, and it sold not a lot but better than any other Roc-A-Fella release this year besides Kanye.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

The Beanie record is really really great!

I'm happy to see Stay Fly is number 1! That was my first thought before I clicked the thread...

I was surprised Gold digger by Kanye wasn't on there...

Bread and Butter isn't one of my favs off the Beanie though....I like that Feel it in the Air song that Heavy D produced better...I think that was the first single...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

That list just confirms I really truly didn't listen to much rap at all this year, but read ILM too much cause the names are mostly familiar.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 19 December 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

As far as critics Beanie isn't really that slept on, at least in the circle of blogger-crit that likes mainstream rap. I believe it was Beanie's best selling album too.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

"I believe it was Beanie's best selling album too."

I doubt this is true David.

Sean F (Sean F), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, best selling w/rt first week sales.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I thought "bread and butter" was a mess the first 5 time i heard then on the 6th listen it finally clicked.

'Puba still rules.

ELLI$, Monday, 19 December 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I could be wrong though. It went to number 3 on billboard and sold 130,000 or so its first week.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

3 Freaks made my list!

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Bay Area owns that list. Is Cocaine Blunts Bay-based?

There was a single I heard on the radio about a year ago...it really sounded like slowed down techstep drum&bass, with lyrics saying something about a club or something like "damn it's getting hot in here/don't stop til the cops get here"...really sick business. Any ideas?

viborgu, Monday, 19 December 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

cocaine blunts is based in the northeast but jocks the bay & houston like every other up-north rap blogger ever

$#@!!, Monday, 19 December 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

It's this:

36. The Team f/ HAMMER and some other dudes - It's Gettin Hot Remix

one time gaffled 'em up (one time gaffled 'em up), Monday, 19 December 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad to see my sense of a lack of great '05 albums validated by someone who listened to way more hip-hop than me.
