Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 19 December 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club?

Seemed like they were pretty much finished, and then "Howl" came out and folks were suddenly interested again.

word...lick it up was big....and they sort moved over to a more metal style, less 70s rock.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 December 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Hmm.. Neil Young fits in here to some extent. Or more, like, he got popular again after he stopped changing his style radically with every new album he released.

Hall & Oates is a really great answer to this. Their Philly Soul days were numbered when they turned rock on Voices.

Wondering if the Starship counts here, though I don't think their style really changed all that much between Nuclear Furniture and Knee Deep in the Hoopla. Just their membership.

Joe McCombs, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

Kylie Minogue - massive with PWL/SAW backing ---> started hanging around with the Manics ---> discovered hotpants and disco.

They got 1000 times better, but sadly, not more "popular."

The Weight Is A Gift is one of the best power pop albums of the 2000s, easy.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

would Tom Waits count? Seems like after the "change" he lost some of his audience(that was dwindling anyway) and gained an audience from other areas(but not en masse), he might have just come out even.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Human League (Jam & Lewis era)

Depends on whether you are speaking of the UK or the US. In the UK, they were never quite gone during the 80s, and apart from "Human", the "Crash" singles flopped completely. It took a couple of singles from the very synthpop oriented "Octopus" to bring them back into the UK Top 10 again.
