zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy that Living Things made both the Spin and Rolling Stone lists (also that Wide Right made the Rolling Stone list, which had more and better hip-hop on it than Spin's list by the way; also, Rolling Stone at least acknowledged country by running a top 10 country singles list along with sundry other lists). In other news, are Caps & Jones any good? I never even heard of them til now.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

yes it's a masterpiece but that doesn't necess. mean it's any good/.
-- Sororah T Massacre (stevem7...), December 20th, 2005.

From the Pitchfork album thread.

Huh???? then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

32. Caps & Jones - Moving In Stereo

They must have a friend at spin

hollertronix clone #28

haha, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Huh? (xpost)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

A little late to catch on to Franz, aren't they?

Mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Guero at #11? ...no.

telephone thing, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Did people really like Guero THAT much?

If it makes P&J Top 40, I'll eat my hat...and I don't wear one.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

the most ridiculous things about that list are Hypnotize but no Mezmerize, and Slim Thug being the 2nd highest hip hop album.

Al Shipley (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

If it makes P&J Top 40, I'll eat my hat...and I don't wear one.

I would've thought it'd be a shoo-in for P&J Top 40. I'm not sure if people actually like it (except for S/FJ), but c'mon, it's a Beck album.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Hey, its almost the same as Pitchfork's. Shocker!

erklie500, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

(just with a different furniture arrangement, that is)

erklie, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

some things I didn't know about 2005's finest artists before I read this piece.

Young Jeezy 'restored the drug-dealer narrative to a hallowed position in the annals of rap.'

'Drop your guard and [the Animal Collective] will sound like wisdom.'

The Woods was 'clasic-rock-dude swagger reclaimed with feminine confidence marked by a Pacific Northwest stamp that entwines rock'n'roll history with manifest destiny.'

DangerDoom is 'Dr. Octagon for kids - a niche we didn't even know we needed filled.'

Spoon 'could make perfect pop from two notes and a snare hit.'

In hindsight, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning 'sounds less like a generational position paper and more like an intimiate folk-rock CD by a principled singer/songwriter who's working hard to keep things indie, stay loyal to friends, and pierce individual hearts.'

Hypnotize 'is shaped by hip-hop, but spares us the rap-metal shtick.'

'While the iPod people predict the death of album, its refreshing to find a half-frantic, all-polished metalloid coaster that packs at least six potential singles on a cohesive debut that recalls the glory days of Britpop and second wave punk.' That coaster is the Kaiser Chiefs.

On Be, 'Common suddenly sounded like the seer he'd always thought he was.'

Already Platinum 'turned lethargy into a virtue.'

Ben Gibbard's 'romantic croon soars like a wayward balloon.'

My Morning Jacket 'are so convinced of their badassness that they named their best record for the sign of Zorro.'

Franz Ferdinand has discovered 'that life in a limousine can be as difficult as the struggle to get through the passenger door.'

....
....
....

'What gets MIA's home-made version of Missy Elliott's life-affirming dance-floor-scattering sex-funk gibberish over is the conceit that it's a vision of the tribalized world where, say, Islamic fundamentalists hear one of her jams on the radio and decide to forget all this jihadist hoo-ha and get booty loose.'

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Fuck it, these lists were fun when I was strung out from studying for finals in college, but who actually gives a fuck anymore. All they do now is make me mad at the twats who write those awful, awful blurbs.

PB, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

When I was in college strung out studying for finals, lists of records actually seemed worth getting angry over.

I like MIA, LCD Soundsystem, Go! Team, System of a Down, NIN, Sleater Kinney, Animal Collective.

Bloc Party not bad but seemed to have no.. spark, but I feel that way about a lot of what I've heard from many of these artists. Oh well.

Haven't heard but am very very curious now: Amadou et Mariam!, Art Brut. I almost bought the Amadou and Mariam last night actually..

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Did people really like Guero THAT much?

It was the most played album on college radio in 2005.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Why is Art Brut making all these US-based lists when it hasn't been released in the US?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Downloading, yo.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Caps & Jones are good but putting em that high on an albums of the year list is kinda excessive

I liked their Lemon-Red Mix Series mix well enough that I bucked up $5 on PayPal to order Moving in Stereo off their website but in the end I liked the Lemon-Red mix better. There's this one truly cringeworthy part at the beginning of Moving in Stereo (Brass Monkey vs. Monkey Gone to Heaven), it only goes on for a minute or so but, ick. Other parts of it are good though, I dig the "1970s Heron Flow" segment.

Renard, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

It was the most played album on college radio in 2005.

that's so depressing

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

which of the artists on that list made the cover of SPIN in 2005?

don weiner (don weiner), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

pls tell me that MIA blurbs not real.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Let's have a poll to decide which of those blurb excerpts is most horrid.

We all know that MIA is #1, so we'll be voting on #2-#10.

Actually, Anthony may have impelled me to buy the year-end SPIN purely for the comedy.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually really fond of the 'wayward balloon' metaphor, and will probably think about it every time I hear that fucking gelding.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

SPIN is "Nips" spelled backwards

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

tone did they have a 10 'editor's choice' or 10 'records you didn't hear you fucking loser' this year?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

I thought the The Woods blurb was for A Bigger Bang.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

i have heard and enjoyed dangerdoom, dungen, run the road, lcd soundsystem, hold steady. mia kinda bugged me after awhile. i like that bucky done gun song, but maybe not as much as that lady sov single. i couldn't listen to the sufjan album all the way through. i don't like that living things album as much as that chuck eddy guy (but he's a darkness fan, so, you know...). i would like to hear fiona's album. did i miss out on anything amazingly great?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

tone did they have a 10 'editor's choice' or 10 'records you didn't hear you fucking loser' this year?

nope! just albums, reissues and singles (i could grab some quotes from that but after that MIA line I think we've given Charles Aaron enough attention for one day). I assume Art Brut would have made the 'you didn't hear' list back in the day, but now its #3 or something.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

did they have that list where eddy drops his twenty favorite singles and then in spot #20 reps for a shitty overplayed one?

gear (gear), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Haha, Scott, Living Things is my numero uno of the year. (And I'm a fan of the Darkness!) But we're still like peanut butter and jelly, right?

Je4nn3 ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha number 20 is "wake me up when september ends"

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

and I assume you mean Aaron

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

most definitely, jeanne. i didn't hate it or anything. just wasn't blown away by it. not like that raging speedhorn album that i loved so.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

so art brut are the next big thing?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Aaron re: "September Ends," "You were dateless for the senior prom, didn't get into your third-choice college and Mom's drunk boyfriend wrecked your car on a beer run. This song is for you."

I don't get the Living Things, but I haven't heard an album in its entirety.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

do they sound like gang of four?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

aaron! right

gear (gear), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Keith Harris's voice review only referenced the lyrics, so I asked them what they sounded like and he said Wire.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm curious, but I can wait.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

i don't care if i ever hear another post-post-punk-funk herky jerk album again for as long as i live. next rapture album better be some heavy fucking grand funk boogie action.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

i'm suspicious of that my morning jacket album. i'm afraid it will remind me of bad flaming lips/spiritualized and make me go zzzzzzzzzzzz

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

i'm not checking it out unless somebody tells me they took the neil young wanna-be out of the well.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

what's jim greer's take on clap yr hands say yeah?

But, no, you three continue this, it's fucking hysterical.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

it's gonna be ok dom, eventually everyone will forget who you are again and you'll just be another selfpromoting stylus hack who occasionally bites custos' jokes. you can get thru this dom.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

sigh there's a chance i'll hear about this from emily and doctor casino tonight. and yes dom, i'm projecting. it was in fact me that was bragging about writing for bizarre magazine above and that starts a selfpromoting stylus thread every few weeks in a desperate bid to be noticed and when that fails bites custos persona (only with a lil of that bizarre attitude!) to make my mark. this was me, yes.

Scott, I have that Raging Speedhorn album somewheres. I have to dig it out if you love it so. Did you happen to hear the release this year by PB Army? That one was pretty excellent. I tend to associate thsoe two bands together because I got the press kits at the same time. I have no idea if they sound anything alike!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually 1% proud of SPIN for not including Weezer. I know that must have been a tough exclusion.

For real, what are the 20 singles? I'm goin nuts with anticipation.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

walk down to the convenience store, dude.

'Twan (miccio), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

They just make them look fun in the commercials.

The mall is open until midnight due to pre-Xmas funth, but I know if I go there, they'll have the SPIN with Fall Out Boy on the cover and not the January issue.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

So.. Does anyone want to post the singles? (The issue is still not for sale in my area.)
