ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love it. R u drunk, Ethan?

Michael Bourke, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan has flipped! I half expect to wake up and find that the entire board is now completely filled up by ethan threads posted every time a new song comes on the oldies radio station he's obviously listening to. (ps. I like this song okay).

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Flip away, Ethan

They chop off our heads and drink from our necks, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...fur luvvvinnnn!!!, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone else see the old Daily Show where Craig Kilborn opens with that line? So very...

Forever marred by use in a Tampax ad.

JM, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's always bugged me that I can't recall who all has sampled that opening bit. Anyone have some names to throw around?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a very good song.

Dan I., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like this song, too. Pretty much sui generis, no?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, it's good. the chorus, specifically.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Belle & Sebastian perform it in Glasgow. RoXoR.

Is that song the origin of the term "Who's your daddy?"

DV, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's so bad it has to be believed.

JUlio Desouza, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

christ, is EVERYONE drunk or worse today? ethan, brian, and now julio? (i'm not certain about julio.)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Angelo Badalamenti/Julee Cruise "Twin Peaks Theme"/"Falling" channels The Zombies - "Hung Up On A Dream".

'revealing the inner secrets and motivations of the stars since 2002'

Paul, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, can anyone pinpoint when this Zombies revival started? cause about six months ago i remember searching half the north island of NZ [we're talking every record store in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington] for 'em and only unearthing a coupla dodgy 60s- compilations with 'She's Not There'. seems suddenly all my music-nerd friends got into/rediscovered 'em and there're even re- issues of 'Begin Here' and 'Oddessey...' just appeared. coincidence? wierd cosmic alignment action? were they recently sampled/covered/ referenced/namedropped by someone Hip?

petra jane, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
ned definition of sound sampled this i think

minna (minna), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

someone should mash-up this and "Stand By Me", pronto.

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

charlie did you hear that dj riko mashup with the supremes and beatles versions of 'come together', um, come together?

minna (minna), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
finally listened to the copy of odessey and oracle i downloaded a week ago. "Time" is, of course, marv., but I am now addicted to "Care of Cell 44", which is beyond incredible. i like it better than the beatles (and i do actually like the beatles).

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it was mainly thanx to this thread that i bought a cheapo Zombies' comp a coupla weeks back... no huge revelations in relation to little-heard-by-me-60s-combos, but "Time of the Season", "She's Not There", and "Leave Me Be" and "Woman" me likes
haven't heard 'Odyssey & Oracle' in its entirety, however

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 20 March 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"you Make Me Feel Good" is the best Zombie song evah.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 20 March 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Aaron, "Care of Cell 44" is genius.

I saw Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent last year and they did "Rose for Emily" and I wanted to cry with joy. Blunstone's voice still sounds GREAT!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

...because you think the "feels so good" is going to be the high point but then he tops it with "you're coming home"...

B.Rad (Brad), Thursday, 20 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ahh... care of cell 44, the prison song. pure brilliance. much tom my astonishment and enjoyment, elliott smith closed with that classic zombies song a few years ago. odyssey & oracle = classic.

j.a.e, Thursday, 20 March 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

because you think the "feels so good" is going to be the high point but then he tops it with "you're coming home"

Great point.

Plus the way it gets quiet after that couplet, with the subdued voices harmonizing.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 20 March 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

care of cell 44 is so pure that it incriminates everything else in my colelction as being too pretentious, and it does the same to me. suddenly, i want to toss out all of my books and run wild in the fields! Suddenly, my inner Romantic is unleashed after years of being buried under metrocards and social criticism. ;-)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 March 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I still want to know what she did to get herself in prison.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 20 March 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the song was originally called "Care of Cell 69" before the record company changed it...

Seriously: I have had Zombie Heaven for about a year, and I swear every song is amazing.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 20 March 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I got addicted to "Brief Candles" for quite a while off "Odessey." The whole album is great, start to finish. Also "Changes" had me totally hooked for about 6 months. Dusty Springfield did a fine cover of the Zombies' "If It Don't Work Out" on "Ev'rything's Coming Up Dusty", 1965. The Zombies were fantastic. "Care of Cell 44" is along w/Big Star's "O My Soul"Most Tasteful Use of Mellotron?

Jess Hill (jesshill), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Great song - even greater album

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Blunstone and Argent last year too, in Arlington. It was crazy, his voice sounds exactly the same. Though the poser session guitarist they brought with them was fucking annoying.
Yeah, Care of Cell 44. Zombie Heaven. Odyssey and Oracle. Etc, etc. Awesome.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Zombies Zombies Zombies Zombies

best song is "She's Not There," more pathos in the way dude breathes in the second chorus than in any Rolling Stones or (gasp) Beatles song

Neudonym, Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Though the poser session guitarist they brought with them was fucking annoying.

Yeah, he really didn't fit the music. I actually talked to him for a brief bit afterwards; turns out he's the brother of Don Airey, the dude who played keyboards on Ozzy's Blizzard of Ozz!

I think my favorite track off the album these days is "This Will Be Our Year". I just love the simple optimism of it.
