musicians who have been in at least 2 successful bands

I don't know if it's been done already, tried to search for other threads but no results so here we go : I've often wondered if there are many musicians who have played in at least 2 very successful bands.

I can think of dave grohl with nirvana and foo fighters (also the guitarist who was with nirvana at the end and started was also in foo fighters) + maybe even 3 bands if you add QOTSA.

also, the guys from joy division and new order.

maybe mccartney with beatles and wings, too.

John Lydon was in the Sex Pistols and Public Image Ltd. (I tend to listen to the latter more than the former these days, something I can't say for Paul McCartney's second band versus his first, though I do like some Wings records).

Bob Mould was in Husker Du and Sugar (the former may not have been successful in terms of Billboard chart action, but were a huge influence on subsequent groups).

James, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

If we're defining 'success" as "making lots of money," then yeah, Wings was pretty damn huge in the '70s.

How 'bout Genesis and Peter Gabriel?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Damon Albarn is in both Blur and Gorillaz.

I suppose you coudld count Chris cornell from soundgarden and the guys from rage against the machine. But Audioslave is a monstrosity.

Tommy Stinson was in The Replacements(critically successful) and a hired hand in "Guns n' Roses" but thats doesn't really count.

Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots and the guys from guns n roses in velvet revolver.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

again stretching success to include "coolness," noise dudes are like almost all cross-membered. wolf eyes, double leopards, black dice, lightning bolt, animal collective, excepter, nautical almanac, TLASILA, etc etc. - this is a little different, i suppose. but when there's a vibrant, close-knit (esp DIY-ish) scene, it's just cool to have friends on your records and in your bands.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

jeff tweedy..
the travelling wilburys
johhny mar- the the and electronic

Sean Slattery (slats), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

counting johnny marr for being in BOTH the the and electronic is awesome!

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

why thank you:)
It is a very loose definiton of success though.

Sean Slattery (slats), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I love how The Smiths aren't one of Johnny Marr's successes...(xxxpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it seems to have turned into musicians who have been in at least 2 bands

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Depending on how we are defining success, does Stuart David count as Looper, his post-B&S project, seem to be making a shitload of money out of commercials and film projects and stuff?

Are we talking just critically successful now? If so, I nominate Davey Henderson who was in three of my favourite bands (The Fire Engines, Win, Nectarine Number 9) without really troubling the chart compilers.

Proper successful - Jeff Lynne

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

A Perfect Circle is the lead singer from tool's side project. They've gotten much airplay on mainstream rock stations in the NYC area. In many respects, I'd say they were biggger than tool at this point.

bsj30 (bsj30), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Terry Bozio

Name D'Achange, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Tom Petty
Eric Burdon? Maybe?
Depending on how "successful" the FBB were, I'd also offer Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman.

musically (musically), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

... and Bernie Leadon of course

...with Ross Kemp as 'Pixel' (Dada), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

a pretty high proportion of musicians go from one band to another, or a solo career. i think we're talking auteur-types here, not hired guns like sara lee, skunk baxter, patrick moraz, cozy powell, etc. you should probably dump supergroups, too, if you want to keep things interesting.

Paul Heaton: Housemartins / Beautiful South (although that's more of the Paul Weller/Billy Corgan model, one artist performing under two different band names)

Tanya Donnelly: Throwing Muses / Belly
Timothy B. Schmit: Poco / The Eages (okay, that's weak)
Ronnie Wood: The Faces / The Mouldy Stones

And the winner is...

Randy Bachman! Guess Who / BTO

Mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Klaus Schulze - Ash Ra Tempel // Tangerine Dream
Kenny Loggins - Electric Prunes // Loggins & Messina

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Ash Ra Tempel, yes they were really successful weren't they?

...with Ross Kemp as 'Pixel' (Dada), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Isn't anyone going to stand up for poor, dead, insulted Cozy Powell?

Mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Bernard Butler - Suede/McAlmont & Butler/Tears

I suppose the time has come that we have to mention Pete Doherty then, I can't avoid it any longer.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

mick ralphs - mott the hoople and bad co

rocco, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

... beat that. They didn't all have hits of course.

...with Ross Kemp as 'Pixel' (Dada), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Bill Bruford - Yes, King Crimson

earlnash, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

"Ash Ra Tempel, yes they were really successful weren't they?" - Well, yes - if "success" can be defined in terms beyond album sales.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

...with Ross Kemp as 'Pixel' (Dada), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

If Montrose had a hit, then Sammy Hagar. If Damn Yankees did ("High Enough"?), then Tommy Shaw.

Kip Winger: Alice Cooper, Winger

I'm assuming jazz doesn't count?

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 22 December 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Todd Rundgren - Nazz and Utopia
Rod Stewart - John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Small Faces
