Surf with me ILM

I would really like to download some damn good surf guitar tracks to make a compilation for myself. However, whilst liking the sound of it, I know bugger all about the genre.

Can I have some recommendations on the basics please? A sort of Rough Guide in a way. Thanks!

Oh brother.

Anyway, Dick Dale (in part by his own words on the subject but I'm not going to argue) is considered by many to be the starting point for the whole shebang. That's him doing "Miserlou" playing over the opening credits of Pulp Fiction. Here's some info about the song and its provenance.

Link Wray does some good surf-ish stuff. Unfortunately, I couldn't name a particular track.

The Challengers are also great, and the original s.t. to "Endless Summer" by the Sandals is cool.

GA was annoying, but not incorrect. I was going to be helpful and suggest Dick Dale, too, until I thought to myself, what if typed "surf music" into Google or Wikipedia or Allmusic?

I'd surf with Anna.

I just left Los Straitjackets. They were alright but it's difficult to listen to an hour and a half of surf music.
I need to be reading or something.

My favorite update on the genre is The Raybeats' "Guitar Beat" LP.

five years pass...

Here it is 5+ years later, and Raybeats/Los Straitjackets guitarist Daddy-O Grande (Danny Amis) has been recovering from bone marrow cancer, and a heap of related medical bills. A series of benefit gigs across the country started Tuesday night in L.A.

(I'll be in one of the bands 6/25 at Lee's Liquor Lounge. MN surf and rockabilly fans should come out!)

Sorry to hear that about Danny Amis but glad to see he's in remission. The Raybeats were fun.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 9 June 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

Raybeats were kinda life-changing for me; between them and The B-52's I definitely starting digging surf records out of thrift store bins. The Hoboken show features a Raybeats reunion. I'm not clear if Danny's well enough to play or if someone else will be filling in. (Individuals reuniting for that night, too; love that band.)

Surf fans might dig this comp of what my cronies and I did staring at the stars out of the soybean fields plugging into a Tascam portastudio in the late Reagan/Bush years:
