Thread to be changed in case of secession...

For all of your Montreal record store, DJ night, concert, festival and so forth blabbing.

Musique Cfou just opened up a month and a bit ago. It's at 251 Duluth Est, and while the owner is one of them damnable GEMM sellers, he's got a great stash of stuff, even that damn Cowboys International record I was eyeing.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to go there.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I will make it to Montreal in 2006, I promise.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

did i go to that place? do they have a bunch of old disquivel stock?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

of course the big news is esoterik closing :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

esoterik's closing? wild. does that mean they are selling everything off, cheap? because if so it might be worth flying back for...

i hope hope hope Cheap THrills is ok?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Laïka, Brontë, Esoterik - I miss you, but I'll be back in '06 (just see what you can do about improving that exchange rate in the meantime, non?). Merci!

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

i never really liked esoterik, except for two things:

1) good rates for selling used cds.

2) Rivers and Mountains.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Shit, no more Esoterik? :(

OTM about used CD's, particularly noise/experimental stuff.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

(sorry, I meant good prices and selection on purchasing used CD's, not selling them to the store)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Come again? No more Esoterik? The only (other) shop worth a lengthy visit?

WEAK. LAME. WEAK.

Of course, given its location, I can understand why it's not inviting franchise offers. Can I just wishfully think they're moving to St. Laurent?

What about the shop next door to Laïka? Are they weathering the shoddy (if your salary doesn't consist of more than five digits) economy?

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

The real big, for-those-in-the-know, news is the demise of Totally Tuesday...

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

jay you wanna come out tonight or jan 3 and guest?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

anyway esoterik was great. good selection of anything indie-ish and no shitty attitude. totally friendly. good prices.

cheap thrill is unfortunately still going strong.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

The lack of a new/used CD/vinyl store in Montreal is kind of disheartening...

The third would be cool avec moi! Is the third the last shebang?

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

S1ocki, what's your beef with Cheap Thrills?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

well.. i don't REALLY have beef with them but i'm not really happy with them being the only game in town. i don't think they have a very good selection--they seem to be perpetually on a real late-'90s stylee.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

but don't get me started on l'oblique.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Those funhouse stairs.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

esoterik's closing? wild. does that mean they are selling everything off, cheap? because if so it might be worth flying back for...

they are gone already and sold off pretty much everything.

i don't like the vibe at cheap thrills, i always feel like i'm in the way of some shady deal going down in the store at that very moment.

subalterne wasn't bad for the few times i went, but it's kinda out of my way (i.e. i have to make a point to go there)

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Is Hub (remembered the name) next to Laïka still open? That place was a pretty good alternative to Esoterik for electronik musik.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

no, laika expanded into that space.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

That can't be a bad thing...unless, of course Laïka still lacks something resembling a (two-foot square of) dancefloor (area). Curiously lacking given its regular (and guest) DJs.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

no dancefloor.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

No more Esoterik + no Laïka dancefloor in spite of extra space + an exchange rate of $1.00 USD to $1.17 CAD = *sigh*

The more things change, the more they get rectangular. Won't stop me from coming (still too much love for Mlle. MTL)!

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Esoterik ruled; apparently Justin, Jacob and Chris may be opening another store after taking a break. Hopefully NOT on St-Laurent, thank you very much! I and many others picked up a heavy grip for next to nothing at their closing sale, but I could feel a part of me dying with that last purchase.
Cheap Thrills is a great store, but mostly for new stuff in my experience, and where Esoterik had minimal techno, Cheap Thrills has metal. Gary knows his stuff for sure, and the books aren't 1/2 bad either. Definitely less chit-chat though.
Cfou did indeed pick up a bunch of disquivel stock.
New Pop Shop location had a crazy stash of psych and experimental stuff when they first opened, but it vanished fast.
JamCan has some goods too, and cheap.

CD Esoterik new year's eve party at Sala Rossa is going to be fun, and hopefully not a total sausage party.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

haha don't worry, i'm sure there'll be a girl there!

they should totally open the new store on st-laurent. why not?? they'd do great there and there is no logical reason the main shouldn't have a good all-purpose indie-ish record store

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Or the Mile End for that matter. Get the trust-funded where they roost. Combine that with a 24 hour Korean BBQ / breakfast joint, man...

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

How long is Esoterik still open? Are they in fact doing a clearance sale?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

they're done, my friend.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

xpost - because I live in St-Henri dude. Esoterik would be constantly picked over if it was in the plateau or mile end, not to mention the whole vibe would get all corrupted.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I'd accept Outremont.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

it's a new cd store! it can't get picked over!

ok i know they have a used section

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

seriously jj you wanna dj tonight?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'm going to be able to keep my eyes open for another two hours (sleeeeeeeeeep deprivation), can I do the 3rd? I mean, it's like my namesake or something.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

very true!

sure! it would be appropriate if you played the last-ever totally tuesday. WOULD TRULY CLOSE THE BOOK.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

I will make every attempt to be a Foster-Wallace-like footnote in the majestic volumes of The AbsoluTues.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

last ever? Maybe I'll actually make it across town for once!

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah! please do!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

last-ever?

x-post

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

tonight is the second-last ever! we skip next week, and yeah, the 3rd is the last-ever last-ever.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

I will make it to Montreal in 2006, I promise.
secondé, t'entends ?

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

last totally tuesday TONIGHT!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

There's going to be a lot of love in that room.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

that's one word for it!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Anyone know of anything happening next weekend, like Thursday-Saturday. Anything, especially any crazy/cool parties/raves?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Sunday, 19 March 2006 03:38 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

this is insanely good, the cream of montreal's grainy indie pop crop in artsy overexposed wobbly intimate short films! the luyas and clues are my second or third favourite bands in town this year, and that braids song is wonderful, the rest are all darling too!

The video player applets on that site are worse than useless.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 19 November 2009 05:14 (sixteen years ago)

It’s been months since I first heard about the mysterious Clues, founded by Alden Penner of the genius Unicorns, and Brendan Reed, an ex Arcade Fire member. I was immediately smitten by the first track released, Perfect Fit, and a few months later, the album blew me.
