I like what I've heard, but that isn't much. Where to start, and which albums to pick up?

Also, what similar groups would you recommend?

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

get the new one and then work your way back. how far do you want to go back? way back.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

and don't neglect the Tear Da Club Up Thugs record!!!

reacher, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

the new-ish single Stay Fly just destroys everything else. get that for sure.

also check out:
Slob on My Knob (for comedy value)
Sippin on da Syrup (obviously)
Doncha Get Mad
Ridin Spinners
Just Like Us

that's a good start

pppp, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

two way freak is a pretty good tune too

matlewis (matlewis), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Mystic Stylez
Underground Volume 1 (1991-1994)

jcartledge (jcartledge), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

"Testin' My Gangsta" owns.

R. J. Greene, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

BIN LADEN WEED

also, stay fly is close to single of the year.

virtually everything I've heard from 3-6 is worth at least a listen; some of it is unbelievably good.

"Whoop that Trick" was intended to be "Smack That Bitch" till Terrence Howard pussed out and made them change it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Da Unbreakables if you like the new one. Three-6's Chapter 2: World Domination, and When the Smoke Clears which is less-good but has their big late 90s hits. Project Pat's Mista Don't Play and Ghetty Green, Gangsta Boo's Enquiring Minds, Lil Wyte's Phinally Phamous (I've heard Doubt Me Now is good too but haven't listened myself), Koopsta Knicca's Da Devil's Playground which has a lot of the more satanic/cultish stuff and it opens with a SITAR sample, and Frayser Boy's album from this year is pretty decent.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

As a whole I probably like Unbreakables more than the new one; it seems to run together a little less on the whole, but that might be my level of familiarity vs. Unbreakables which I've heard a ridic number of times at this point.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

"Tear Da Club Up" the song is a classic.

Robert L Bell (Robert L Bell), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Choices soundtrack is good, Choices II has some alright stuff.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I think the Most Known Hits comp might be the first CD I buy by them. I've heard a lot of their stuff but I feel like I only need a basic primer to actually own.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

"Alex in Baltimore" hahah

O RLY? (eman), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

"Chickenhead" by Project Pat, poduced by Juicy J I think.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Da Unbreakables is ace.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

i'm so used to the chopped and screwed version of 'sippin on the sizzurp' that the regular version sounds odd to me

O RLY? (eman), Thursday, 22 December 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

I think it's worth going back The End, World Domination, and When The Smoke Clears. Also the Tear Da Club Up Thugs record as mentioned above. If lo-fi, homegrown early 90's gangsta rap from Memphis interests you, there's lots of records and mixtapes before that.. mostly put out under DJ Paul and/or Juicy J.

I wonder if they slipped a version of "Stay Fly" onto the reel the voters based their decision ... that song is unbelievably good (... and is now my ringtone),

Chris O., Monday, 6 March 2006 03:35 (twenty years ago)

This just in: Faux gangsta commercial rap artists win approval from White Liberal America!

the song is awful but the mafia are not.

Giles, I think you need to make your point by posting that same tired, ignorant shit on more posts. More boards! Go forth and hypnotize minds!

Also Sterling, autumn.

Keaney Tong, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

no!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

Lolli is the shit - people love it at parties. I'm kinda flabbergasted more of America hasn't come around to it, but then the Lollipop title was extremely ill-chosen. First, Three 6 throws in the horror into club music, then adds some soul for an Oscar, and now they're on some electro shit and keeping it real. I <3 Three 6 Mafia!

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 04:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Lolli Lolli" is so fucking wack.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

the beat and the verses are really just about on par for an uptempo Three 6 track, it's the T-Pain impersonator on the hook that almost singlehandedly makes it awful.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:48 (seventeen years ago)

also because it's such a shameless pop grab and they did seem above that kinda even post-oscar

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but i mean without that hook it wouldn't even come off like a shameless pop grab at all.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

it's not even like they went out and made a "pork and beans" style winking pop song that happened to catch on

otoh how many ppl that are bitching about "lolli" would be bitching about last 2 walk never getting freed if three 6 had said "fuck you" to their label

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

if i was actively watching for three 6 albums id be okay with a "lolli lolli" if it meant that the damn thing finally got out

it's weird that they gave it the "birthday girl" treatment in the sequencing. i thought they genuinely were feeling that song but i guess they are just selling it. then again maybe they had that tracklist set up and when "lolli" broke and the label okayed the release they just tacked it on at the end.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

yall think this would be more or less defensible (or the same?) if the hook was actually t-pain

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:59 (seventeen years ago)

In slang, "dope boy fresh" describes a prosperous drug-dealer.[1]

Wow-- I had "Poppin' My Collar" #1 on my 2006 year-end (not sure I want to put that to the test right now), and I made a joking reference to them on Facebook not an hour ago, not knowing about this. They also inspired my favourite Jon Stewart line, the night he hosted the Academy Awards: "For those of you keeping track at home: Three 6 Mafia, one Oscar, Martin Scorsese, zero."

clemenza, Sunday, 22 December 2013 05:46 (twelve years ago)

they're also one of the best-known, prolific and consistently enjoyable rap collectives of all time so they've got that going for them as well.

I think Stewart's line was much more of a wry observation on the then-winless Scorsese than any kind of a knock on Three 6 Mafia, who just happened to have won that night (although their improbability made it that much funnier). He could have substituted Tatum O'Neal or Phil Collins and the joke still would have worked.

Having said that, you're right, not the best moment to dredge up the line.

fun times seeing these guys last night (following a set by hugh masekela, i think i could historically be the first person to do that double feature); no juicy j but that's not much of a surprise given there was a headliner show by him a few days earlier. maybe only two hundred people there which was a bummer, but hey: southern rappers going on an nyc stage at midnight on a Tuesday. very nerdy and hot topic crowd but super laid back and very excited to see the band. like a forty minute medley set, sans Juicy/Infamous there were a lot of songs they couldn't get very far into. Props for resurrecting 'Get the Fuck Out My Face' and 'Da Blow'.
