I am making a Cat Power best of CD

because it is Christmas and my mum's partner asked what 'Good Woman' was when I was playing it out of my room and seemed interested in the answer and I have no money.

(weirdly none of the SIXTEEN cat power threads on here seem to remotely overlap with any S/D-ing)

Ok so yeah; a problem is that I think more than maybe anyone else I can think of I really really think of CP albums as, well, albums - it's a real effort to try and pick out individual tracks? Right now a rough shortlist goes something like:

Moonshiner
Werewolf
Good Woman
Metal Heart
Names
Water and Air
What Would The Community Think
Good Clean Fun
Nude as the News
Colors and the Kids
MJB cover from Peel Session

but this is probably missing loads even from the albums I do have (Free, Moon & Community) so what should I put in from other places? The wonderwall cover is meant to be brilliant I think?

No "Crossbones Style" or "He War"?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

I Found a Reason

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

"Rockets" (Myra Lee version, if they're different)/"Still In Love"

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

you have to play both of those really, really loud to get the full experience, preferably put them on the CD together.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

"He War" is a must.

The covers record is pretty weak outside of "Satisfaction" and "I Found A Reason."

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

I can't work out if I like cross bones style! I will play it more on its own and see.

I'll put He War on there, cheers.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

really, I like "kingsport town", "sweedeedee", "red apples". and ok "wild is the wind", kinda. i'd probably put all those on!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

What are those from, Susan?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

I love I Found A Reason! I had totally forgotten that.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

every cat power mix should have "Say" from Moon Pix. I would also consider her new song "The Greatest" an essential. "Could We" is also a great song off her new album.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Gravel, they are all from the covers album.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

i would throw on ice water or top expert.maybe nix water and air(just too depressing man) for king rides by.

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

He War is her Stairway to Heaven. No Cat Power comp can be without it.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

You need "Speak For Me" on there.

darin (darin), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

and yeah 'wild is the wind' is a good one as her mum may know the bowie, george michael, nina simone versions

xp he war always puts me to sleep

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

don't foget 'colors and the kids' from moonpix.

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's one of the first ones I thought of, so so special and wow.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

why does every thread have to mutate into some jerk off bullshit a bunch of wanna be academics?

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Another vote for "Crossbones Style." The skippy drumming on that is so hypnotic. Off to listen to it right now.

Mugged Outside the Jabberjaw, 1993 (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

maybe not! that'd be near the top of mine.

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

I second 'Still In Love'. A must. And Crossbones Style, or course.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm also among those who would need "Cross Bones Style" and "He War" on a Cat Power best-of.

My favorite thing she's ever done though, is the Peel Sessions version of "Wonderwall." It's so dark and lovely.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I should also 2nd "Speak For Me" while I'm at it.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

He War bores me even though its a good one.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

So this best of CD is comprised of the 2 second spaces between the tracks?

Der LOL guy, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

I’ll put crossbones style on, then – a lot of the tracks that I like and dislike are for personal reasons so it’s really useful to know what other people get something out of, it’s a CD for someone else after all…

Could someone YSI that wonderwall cover? I don’t really have any way of hearing it.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

Here ya go.

Well, that didn't work. Anyway, it's on this page along with some other Cat Power covers.

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

It'd be great if you could do some of her onstage banter in between the songs. Just as preparation in case the recipient would love to attend a Catpower performance.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Better yet, put some Paul Stanley onstage banter in between songs.

darin (darin), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Two of my favorite alternate versions:

"Metal Heart" from a KCRW performance in '99, unfortunately the only copies I've heard are from a Real Player stream so it has that "watery" sound but the performance is brilliant.

"Good Woman" from a VPRO broadcast, stripped down and sincere.

Both beat the pants off their studio counterparts.

I second King Rides By and put in a vote for Bathysphere.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

"Taking People" is my absolute fave of hers

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that one's great as well. What Would The Community Think is a near perfect record, I'd have a tough time putting together a CP comp without putting 3/4 of the album on it.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Can't believe nobody's mentioned "We All Die" yet. Although that might scare the novitiate...

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

"Taking People" 2nded! good song and interesting lyrics!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

"King Rides By" thirded. Also "Troubled Waters", and "Keep On Runnin'".

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

So will the title for this comp be, um, well... "Cat Power: The Greatest"

aaaaaahahahahahahhhhahahahaha!!!!

I win!

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

I'll second the "I Found a Reason" cover. Not a knock against her songwriting, but I think it's easily the best thing she's done. Like it much better than the Velvets song too.
