I know, a broad question, but I'll be driving up on Friday and would like suggestions on what to tune to as I'm rolling through Baltimore, Jersey, and beyond.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Just to minimize the searching.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if i'll beat maria to this!

when you hit delaware, try tuning into wprb, at 103.3 fm.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

for as long as you can hold onto the signal in the nyc area, listen to wfmu, 91.1 fm. not the world's strongest signal, but should get you through north jersey and southern connecticut.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

in fact, you should be able to do a smooth hand-off from wprb to wfmu somewhere in the middle of jersey.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

if youre stuck in traffic around college park, md, you should listen to WMUC 88.1 FM. you can call them at 301-314-8800 and request things.

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

A smooth hand-off sounds nice.

x-post

I love me some wfmu, by the way (but it's always been off the interweb, so have never related to it as having a location on the dial).

As an aside, I'd like to mention that that stretch of the NJ pike that runs through apocalyptic refinery bogland (which most people hate) is to me the most beautiful stretch on the I-95 corridor. I find it completely exhilarating (part of that may be because everyone starts driving faster here).

Thanks all, keep em coming.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Although I don't particularly like driving through it, I love the part of the train ride to NYC that goes through the apocalyptic bogland.

As you approach Philly, I find that Temple public radio is a good classical/jazz station - 90.1 FM.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

For the Philly area: Temple is quite good. Classical during the day, jazz at night.

UPenn radio, XPN 88.5 I think, is the best for eclectic indie stuff/good oldies. I like it a lot. I also like 94.5 "THE HAWK" for classic rock.

I hope the numbers are right. I have a bad memory for this sort of thing.

JR, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Princeton's WPRB for Southern Jersey, WFMU for Northern Jersey.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

ahem. wprb >>>>>>>> wxpn

maura (maura), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

91.7 is University of CT station, after that metal still rocks in Worcester. If you are staying on 95, WCNI is 90.9 in and around New London, CT is Connecticut College.

dewey, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

WPRB - 103.3FM [princeton, nj]
WHYY - 90.9FM [phila, pa]
WXPN - 88.5FM [phila, pa]
WKDU - 91.7FM [phila, pa]
WRTI - 90.1FM [phila, pa]
WVUD - 91.3FM [newark, de]
WMUC - 88.1FM [maryland]

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

WCNI, New London on I-95 between Westbrook and Westerly. Actually the range is probably much greater than that now that it's 2000 watts or something.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Ooops, I see just mentioned... Sorry!

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

if you hit up 92.3 on a weekend night you might hear a live mix of Baltimore club music.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

This is great. I'm going to print up a list and tape it to my dashboard. What if I swing through Providence? There's got to be something good blurting out of there.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

also:

WOGL - 98.1 [phila, pa]

'cause you may need a dash of oldies.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

WBRU - 95.5 [prov, ri] - a very polished college (BRown U.) station

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 22 December 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Aren't there some decent college radio programs on New Haven and Bridgeport Connecticut stations? I forgot the call letters and frequencies.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

wxpn is crap, sorry.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

hurting, i would have agreed with that over a year ago but ive seen the station really make an effort in the last year to not be so lame. perhaps it stems from losing most of the "rock" stations in philly? i dont know. plus, they totally bust out ELO's "showdown" from time to time. can't complain with that.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

listen to Baltimore club music on 92Q, 92.3 FM

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 23 December 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

if yr in providence for the love of christ avoid BRU 95.5 (unless it's sunday then it is pretty decent hip hop) unless you want to have your ears infected by generic altrock.
Go with 90.3 FM which is URI's station (out of warwick, I think) and usually has a pretty sweet genre show going at any given time.
I'd tell you to listen to the other brown station (BSR 88.1), where I have a show that doesn't suck, but we're only on at night and not over the holidays and, in all honesty, 90.3 is much, much better. Less indie rock and more interesting shows.

fortheloveofgoddont, Friday, 23 December 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

OK, I love you all. Ready to roll in the morning.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Friday, 23 December 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

1010 has traffic reports on the 1's. 880 has traffic reports on the 8's.

traffic reports are very important in nyc.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 23 December 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

1010 WINS!!!!!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 23 December 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

traffic reports on 880 on the 8's are always followed by weather forecasts.

traffic reports on 1010 on the 1's are not.

this has always confused me.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 23 December 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I know one of the weather guys for 880. He often does his updates from the comfort of his home some 200 miles away.

When he told me that my first reaction was to wonder if it affected the accuracy of his forecasts ...

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 23 December 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

anyone driving through new jersey on 12/28 between 2 and 5pm? ill be on WPRB.

and where are the traffic guys when they do their reports? both stations were reporting the williamsburg bridge was a parking lot in both directions, completely impassable, at the very moment on tuesday night when i was crossing it at 50 miles per hour. ask your friend about that, dammit!
