cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

they did? it looks the same as every other list i've seen.

keyth (keyth), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

mm..maybe as opposed to some of the more well known 'zines

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I agree with the top ten ordering.

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

i just find any list with caribou on it dubious.

keyth (keyth), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

it looks like a list pfork might have made had it been founded 5 years ago instead of 10

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

What does that mean, Dom?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

It's basically the Pitchfork list minus the hip-hop, isn't it?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

kind of what o.nate said. like pfork - pop and hip-hop

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

and no art brut.

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

err except that's an observation.

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

*just an observation

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

i like seeing akron/family and dead meadow in there

still some other favorites of mine glaringly missing

but isn't that a shame for me then

farning, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes, I see. A list that the Pitchfork staff ca. 2000 would make, in other words.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

really, if you add Andrew Bird, maybe Out Hud, it seems kind of a definitive "indie in 2005" list (Art Brut still seems like a step removed from Blink 182 to me, but I'm not into them enough to really defend that)

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

otm, it's a balance of over the radar and personal preferences.

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

because you have to genuinely like some of those records to put them in a year-end.

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

As opposed to other records you put in a year-end cuz you genuinely hate them.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

As opposed to other records you put in a year-end to settle the tastes of the general population.

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

if akron/family got two listings in the top 25, shouldn't they automagically shoot to #1 as most best-er-est band ever?

bobby.lasers (bobby.lasers), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

It's cool to see Wilderness getting some recognition though. I really enjoyed that album.

Trace, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

tiny mix tapes is a disaster. their faux populism / conspiracy nuttiness irritates me. i wasn't aware that the burger king ads were so subversive until they set me straight.

keyth (keyth), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

tiny mix tapes news stories - sub-pitchfork parody faux-hipster nonsense - 3 paragraphs of wanky b-shit.

people just want a quick snapshot of facts re news.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

dead meadow! finally! yes!!

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

i agree soviet, but what about chad vangaalen? why doesn't anybody give him any props? or cass? or grizzly bear? or OF MONTREAL!!!!

i think sunlandic twins is one of my favorite albums of the year. i'm still so surprised nobody else agrees!

farning, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

oh i guess some of those are reissues---

hmm

farning, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

"dead meadow! finally! yes!!"

I think more year-ends should provoke this sort of response. : )

cowboyjane, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I concur about Of Montreal...and I still think Feist and Stars are getting the shaft big fucking time. And I've yet to hear this Akron Family group so I guess I should start with these releases that pop up on every list. And thank god for no "Slim Thug, Mannie Fresh, blah blah blah, generic hiphop" bullshit. And thanks for no Edan. Guys a douche.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

and I still think Feist and Stars are getting the shaft big fucking time

They're being hurt by the fact that the albums came out in Canada in 2004.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

This list makes me feel lonely.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

But your beloved Gang Gang Dance made the cut!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes, that and Animal Collective and Konono made my top 20. But none of the others. I don't even know what most of them sound like, but I imagine a very pale man in a wooly hat.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

DJ Martian--Sorry to burst your bubble, but Pitchfrok scams news from TMT all the damn time. So if you're going to hate on TMT's new dept., you need to doubly hate on P4K's for being frauds. The only news P4K trumps TMT with is exclusive Ryan Adams interviews.

Seacore Shagnasty, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I'd say they got it right in that Feels was #1 (as it rightfully should be) and Takk... was finally included in one of these damn lists. They rest of the albums (on this list and all the others) I couldn't give a toss about.

Plus I like this sentence about Feels:

"As much as it'd be fascinating to see how these guys work in the studio, this record is so joyfully alien that you feel hesitant to suss it all out."

PB, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

re: Seacore Shagnasty - I meant the style [of writing] NOT Content ! re: music news

Pitchfork pre-dates Tiny Mix Tapes, correct?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

And thank god for no "Slim Thug, Mannie Fresh, blah blah blah, generic hiphop" bullshit.

what is some unique hip hop we should be looking out for?

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

as for pitchfork they run lame ass news stories on rubbish such as coldplay, strokes, white stripes etc.

I know pitchfork news dept also monitor my blog for some news stories ! re: my blog analytics with links from the pitchfork staff message board.

Pitchfork are often days late with their news stories. They would be better off running a round the clock group based "Music Blog" - so they can respond to news better.

The content management of the news section at Pitchfork is v.poor in terms of Information Architecture.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

what are your thoughts on rateyourmusic?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

deerhoof is good. i'm glad they were high on the list.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

A superb User Experience that smashes the awful AMG website.

Recent improvements to the yearly lists, now displaying Top 1000.

Watch for many new features in 2006, including "year tagging" of user generated lists.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

They would be better off running a round the clock group based "Music Blog" - so they can respond to news better.

I have heard hints that this may happen, actually.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

re round the clock: i mean having contributors in different time zones, West Coast US, Central, East Coast US and even Europeans and maybe OZ/ NZ.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

What about Africans?

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Africans..do Pitchfork have readers in Africa? Pitchfork are covering Konono No.1 so yes, Africans as well.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

don't forget Japan as well.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Africans, Japanese people, Europeans, Americans, and people from Australia and New Zealand...yes, I think that's about everyone.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

What about Siberian Russians, Canadian Eskimos, Inuits of Greenland, Brazilian Sepultura fans, also India is a fast growing economy - I reckon Pitchfork should try outsourcing ! and China is crying out for an Indie Rock revolution, what about sending Pitchfork staffers on an cultural outreach program to Iran? to convert the nation's youth to be Arcade Fire and Interpol fans.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

humourous!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

paging scott p. of pitchfork - action the Pitchfork global strategy.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

action that shit NOW!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Dead Meadow got royally fucked and royally snubbed by everybody. I was really happy when I saw this list.
