Important!! Stacking CDs -- Only jewelboxes?

Message Bookmarked

I store by CDs by stacking them into piles. But, I've found that I can only do this with CD packaged in jewelboxes. Mixing them with other packaging (digipak, paper, cardboard, etc) leads to the crushing of the other types and the general instability of the stacks.

Ideas?

I don't mean general storage ideas (like those discussed here:

Media Storage

and

CD storage question )

Perhaps you could reserve the stacks for jewel-boxed CDs only, and the ones in digipaks, cardboard sleeves, etc, you could just pile in a heap.

i've had good experience with horizontal rows on shelves: |||||||||||||

dan (dan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

happy to help!

dan (dan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

How many jewel boxes can be stacked vertically before the whole pile is crushed under its own weight? Can somebody do some kind of calculation on this? It's important.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Well, an ENTIRE PILE can't scientifically be crushed after a threshold number of CDs are piled. Perhaps the bottommost jewel case(s) can be crushed.. is that what you mean?

dali madison's nut (donut), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

i file them as dan does. my shelves only fit the exact height of CD jewelcases, so oversized CDs fit in like so: |||||\\\||||

gear (gear), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

It is important. Relatedly, before the pile reaches critical mass such that it crushes the bottomost, the mere fact of balancing the pile, despite the clone-like nature of jewelcases, can be overwhelming.

horizontal rows on shelves: |||||||||||||

Impractical for a large number of CDs.

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

i knocked over so many cd's from their piles, getting dressed this morning. it was lame.

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I really wish I had some know-how about basic 2x4 sawing, screwing, and polishing these days.

I'm hitting a threshold re: CDs and vinyl sprawling all over the floor right now. Boxes can't solve these problems forever. :(

dali madison's nut (donut), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

horizontal rows are indeed practical for a large number of CDs, but you need to know the secret: multiple shelves

dan (dan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm guessing the best resources for finding the most effecient CD storage space would be asking libraries where they buy their CD storage shelves... I'll plan to do this in the near future.

dali madison's nut (donut), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

horizontal rows are much more conducive to filing systems (such as alphabetization) than vertical stacks. this becomes a factor when dealing with large numbers of cds. perhaps we're getting ahead of ourselves though.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

as soon as i get situated in an apartment where ill be for more than a year, im spending a weekend building cd/record storage.

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I use a hard drive, but not one of those flimsy cardboard ones.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Jewel-cases aren't entirely flat, due to their two-part construction. Perhaps you should stack them in opposite directions, like un-cased cassettes, with the hinge facing left, then right, then left. This might help with your general stability issues.

After long periods of research, I have devised a very complex CD-storage system. First, there is this part:

||\\\\ ///|||/
=//||=_//_\||
o0\\\\|| ///__=|
*|||| ))//&^
######### ||{}]]]

Then, nearby, there is this part:

= =
= =
= =
= =
= =
= =
= =
= =
= =
= =

Elsewhere, there is this part:

0 0 0
O O O 0
0 O O 0 O 0

I built my own. It really wasn't that hard!

Jeesz, is this thread for real? Question: Why is this 'important'? Useful info maybe but 'important?! I don't think so.

Wow! I already sort of do that unconsicously but then I feel guilty about not having things categorized. I think I will actually start following this system. Thanks!

Plus it will give me a fancy name for my completely disorganized, uncatagorized CDs.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

i bought two of these which i've cleverly stacked. they're on wheels, which is nice because it weighs 1000 pounds. i line up a horizontal row on top.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

(the wheels are actually at either end, not both on the left, which would be unstable.)

dan (dan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i bought it in white on the advice of a co-worker who knows about such things. i was afraid white would look enormous, like a freezer, or a large person in white pants, but it actually disappears quite nicely into my living room.

I have one of those cabinets from IKEA and a big one of these: http://www.untothislast.co.uk/Shelving/Shelving-Images/CD80x145DaPers.jpg

I am getting close to capacity, and I think the answer is to divest myself of some CDs, rather than to increase the avaoilable storage space. But that will be difficult.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

That's kinda nice, Tim.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

The point being that these options pretty much make anything other than
|||| |||| |||| ||||
impossible, and I'm alright with that.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Bracket strips; 6", 8" and 12" brackets; 1x6's, 1x8's and a couple of 1x12's. The other side of the wall to the right is another wall full of them. Capacity for about 2500 CDs, for less than $100.
