The Wombles - Classic or Dud?

I thought this was some extremely throway novelty stuff. Then I got to hear a couple of the singles they (he) released during their brief mid 70s career, and what do I hear? Some piece of really, really classic twee pop with great harmonies and everything. Must be the best novelty act ever!

It's about half pretty good bubblegum harmony pop ("Remember You're A Womble", "The Wombling Song") and about half pretty bad kids stuff. "The Hall Of The Mountain Womble" is my favourite.

Totally agree Geir. Some of the (throwaway) album tracks are magical examples of uplifting pop and some suprisingly inventive melodies and time structures. Even orchestral stuff on there, and all beautifully done. Check out especially. Wombling in the rain, Minuetto Alagretto and plenty of others dotted over the 3 albums. Wombling merry christmas is the christmas song I most like to hear. Not because it's the best, just simply because it makes me feel great. Mike Batt took the music for the Wombles very seriously indeed, even if few others did the same.
