Holy shit!
Edmonton rapper is awesome! Sick, nasty minimalist (okay, sometimes a little Anti-Poppish) beats and he's all like, "Edmonton this! City of Champions that! Whyte Ave and the Black Dog!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 December 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea (until just now, when I ggl'd) that CW was RP. SWEARS TO GOD.
I got this album in the mail Tuesday, and put it on last night and just flipped out. Like 24 seconds into "Oliver Square" I'm all, "where have you been all year?"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 December 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

please
we know you are rollie
you must live in Edmonton too because this dude is poopoo
he has the voice of a 14 yr old "it's mostly the voice"
beatz ar ok but cold nothing special
plus who cares about Edmonton-I got beef!

blame canada

please, Thursday, 22 December 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

i think we can safely assume at this point that huk is not rollie

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 December 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

The Edmonton stuff was just, y'know, the shock of recognition. I used to live Calgary, and have been to Edmonton a lot, unlike most of the places I hear about in most music of this quality.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 December 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Is this a NEW new album? He had something out earlier this year w/ a few tunes (like "Oliver Square") & a bunch of remixes / bootlegs / cookie recipes.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 December 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I believe it's a proper album/album, called Breaking Kayfabe and from the Stylus review, it seems like it's got a lot of the same tracks as the cookie jar.
I can only imagine that it's brand new (maybe not even "officially" released), since it just hit my desk a few days ago, tho I'd imagine I'm not high on the list of people record labels send shit to that they think will be influential advance buzzmakers.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Fluxblog has a track called "Vicarious" up right now. Not bad.

Mugged Outside the Jabberjaw, 1993 (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

coke machine glow slobbered themselves over this shit and made a point of mentioning "they know him"! oh, cool, so cool you guys know him!

maybe i'll check for it, but canadian hip hop doesn't sound very enticing, especially since fuck 65 drug it's name through the mudd.

but who knows...

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Friday, 23 December 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

kudos.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 December 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Remember, kids: Canada's a foreign country, and therefore totally untrustworthy!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 December 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Being Canadian, I concur, Canadian hiphop is pretty pedestrian for the most part... but Cadence is pretty ace.

The new record is pretty good, but I think the next one has the potential to be a stunner.

Quinn (quinn), Friday, 23 December 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

It's aight.

It's full of really old shit. The next record is a banger.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Saturday, 24 December 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

this conversation is very unlikely

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 24 December 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Saturday, 24 December 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm playing this now. The first track sounds like Orbital with an above-average backpacker MC on it. Which is OK

If you're reading this, "Rollie", you need to grow your hair out. It's a really bad length at the moment.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 17 March 2008 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

not into the new album that much except for 1 or 2 songs but the last one wasnt bad... seems a bit different for the sake of difference but good luck to him.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 17 March 2008 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

i love 'afterparty babies' to pieces.

stevie, Monday, 17 March 2008 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

hmm.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 17 March 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

seriously, what's not to love? 'youth crew', 'real estate' and 'unsuccessful club nights' slay... and there's not a dud among the rest.

stevie, Monday, 17 March 2008 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

i like gettin dumb, house music and unsucessful club nights. the rest, i dunno, im just not that into his ultra nerdy and wordy style of emceeing. its interesting, and i appreciate what hes trying to do, but i dont *like* it that much. might grow on me though.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 17 March 2008 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

really? i've had almost the exact opposite reaction - i just find it such an easy album to love, and i have to strongly resist cueing it up every morning, as i'll easily leave it on repeat and not listen to anything new. same with the new Badu, just supremely listenable and strong albums.

four years pass...

I happened across "Hope In Dirt City" recently and thought it was a pretty good album, mainly because of the production. Which I guess is surprising and a backhanded compliment but as a rock guy, I am more likely to listen for musicality rather than solid flow or whatever. Did this album just come and go with nary a peep? It seems to have mostly good reviews (though not great admittedly).

Been listening to and enjoying his latest, Parallel World; the venue I'm working at is doing a livestream here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MroDUyOruLg

Some good grime production, feels a bit like the first 2 albums in terms of how hard-edged it is.
