A couple questions about PRINCE

Another one of my favorite artists, but here are two things I've never understood:

1. Why is the Black Album so underrated?! This is one of my top 3 Prince releases, easily. I love every track on it.

2. How is Chaos and Disorder considered one of his worst when the Symbol album exists? The former is actually one of my favorite releases of his; I'm not sure why it's constantly slammed. The latter is the only one of his I've heard (I haven't heard Rave or a couple other from that era, keep in mind) that flat out sucks.

Please comment on these questions and pinpoint specifically what you like/dislike about the albums mentioned.

1. the Black Album is not underrated at all. everybody loves it.

2. I agree that Chaos & Disorder needs more love - always enjoyed it -- the "rock" vibe was nice, even if it was a contract-filler. A lot of that record just flat-out kicks it. Seems like it was around the same time that Undertaker shiz came out; dude was just into rocking. but the symbol album is great too. You're crazy if you think it totally sucks! just plucking the hits, "Blue Light" and "Seven" and "Sexy M.F." and "My Name is Prince" are totally solid, in fact they are about as good as we've got from the guy since then!! (and I say that as a massive fan who dutifully buys every album)

"My Name is Prince" is the cheesiest Prince ever got. I cringe when I hear that track (and I love most of Emancipation, etc.)

And you've got to be joking about the Black Album. I don't hear much flat out hate for it, but almost every Prince fan ranks it in the lower half of his albums!

The Black Album regularly gets dissed because of "Dead On It"'s apparent anti-rap sentiments. Chaos And Disorder because some people are stupid and/or don't like to rock. I'm only a softcore fan (love roughly 60% of the man's catalog) but those are both fine efforts. (Altho, weirdly, I got more enjoyment out of my grimy nth-generation "Black Album" cassette back in '88 than from the legit CD version. A "forbidden fruit" kinda thing.)

Come on, the Black Album rules.

Between this and SOTT, he's at the height of his lyric-writing prowess. The implied dis of anyone who'd style herself an "actress-model" is perfect, even if he's being a little unfair.

"my name is Prince" = Prince's response to MC Hammer…
