Baltimorean group, Hollertronix-by-proxy, feted by Diplo. Booty Bass meets polyrhythmic hip-hop with porno lyrics. First single, Put The Pussy On Me, just kills - stabbing vocals, synth-heavy but spare production, writhing precussion rattling all the way through. The Voila mixtape is something else, tracks from the forthcoming album cut in with a liberal blizzard of pop from, well, everywhere - a mix that finds space for Baltimore Girls, Led Zeppelin, Frankie Valli and Laurie Anderson. Mindblowing.

And this morning I got their 'rick rubin' single through the post, and it has utterly floored me.

Anyone else excited by this lot?

there's an mp3 of 'rick rubin' on the site. it KILLS.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Friday, 23 December 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I love the few things I've heard. Both "Put That Pussy on Me" and "What It Look Like" were runners-up for my top 10 singles list. Where's the mixtape available?

Worst live show ever. The collegiate 2 Live Crew, without the crew.

I'd go see them if it were dark and they put paper bags over their heads.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 23 December 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

I avoid this shit like the plague. all the indie stores around here that rarely/never stock Baltimore club music are putting that Hollertronix "bmore gutter music" CD with the drawings of crack vials and an Orioles logo with x'd eyes on prominent display and selling a ton of them.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 23 December 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

that said I saw a quote from the Spank Rock kid about how he finds it distasteful for new jacks to insert themselves into a pre-existing history re: club music, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that they don't want to become a certain breed of hipster's definition of what Baltimore club music is.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 23 December 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

They sent me some shit, I haven't checked it out yet. I'm not sure why I'm even posting in this thread, but there you have it.

Never having heard of 'em, I saw the phrase "Spank Rock" and thought "Finally: A catchall term for the entirety of Hispanic-American punk rock, from Sam the Sham to ? and The Mysterians to the Plugz!"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 24 December 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

distasteful

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 24 December 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

the clips on their site sound like if antipop were trying to actually have fun

jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 24 December 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

antipop trying to have fun sounds like a good thing, but that metaphor doesn't necessarily make spank rock sound like a good thing, if you know what i mean.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 24 December 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

exactly

jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 24 December 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

apparently disco d did the beat in the video on their site. i've been wanting to check him out ever since (get this) i heard that Kevin Federline song he did the beat for.

jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 24 December 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

OTT: Anti-pop had lots of fun, at least on their last album! I like that album. THIS TRACK IS CALLED BUBBLES.

deej.. (deej..), Saturday, 24 December 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

That mix CD they released this past year was really fun, but I'm finding that I really never want to hear it again. :/

dali madison's nut (donut), Sunday, 25 December 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

i listened to the bmore gutta music ep today. whatever.

the stuff that worked best for me were the amanda blank / aaron lacrate contributions. but still, it's sort of like, whatever. there's nothing inherently wrong w/ trendy young goodlooking white kids getting over on "it takes two", it's a classic beat, mr t could do his "be nice to your moms" rap over it and it'll still kill w/ that beat, but do they really think they're improving the beat? or are they just avoiding having a real job / using their college degree?

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

impersonating salt'n'pepa in 2006 is basically like one step up from that nerd-rap shit custos posted yesterday (dude from NZ impersonating slick rick but rapping about calculus)

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's too mean. i actually really like the amanda blank parts, esp on "grit city". but maybe to some extent female rap gets a bit of a pass from me. it's prob easier to be convincingly SASSY for a male audience than it is to be ... whatever spank rock's trying to be.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

i haven't yet heard a line from spank rock yet that sounds as convincing as "it's corrupt where i'm from / edmonton", which is not at all a dis on rollie, but just to say the only reason this guy has an album coming out on big dada is the diplo connection.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

??

"What It Look Like" is great. None of the hating on this thread makes any sense.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 25 December 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I saw Spank Rock when he opened for M.I.A. in Pomona a few months ago and his live show was really fun. Not too much polish, but he did get some uptight girls onstage to dance freak with him. I wanted to get the CD, but they were selling them for like $15! At the merch table! Sorry, but with no distributor/record store markup, I'm not paying more than $10.

naus (Robert T), Monday, 26 December 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

the beat to rick rubin is amazing but that rapping is fucking horrendous

okok, Monday, 26 December 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I've seen spankrock a few times in philly and new york and surprisingly all the shows I saw were pretty fun. They get real crewd and hype (always a good thing). at the last show that girl amanda did some weird acapella rap about being the black ally mcbeal or something and it was weird, but pretty fucking funny and oddly catchy. If I remeber correctly, she then spit her beer all over the audience and said something about artfags and cocaine...it was pretty funny. that said, so far spankrock has yet to disappoint me. I don't know how much i'd pay for his cd but i'd pay a lot to see that shit live

salome, Saturday, 7 January 2006 03:06 (twenty years ago)

I think Spank Rock is pretty dope. They always look like there having a great time! Plus their DJs rock some serious shit. I can't wait to her the Big Dada album.

ronye west, Saturday, 7 January 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

RonyeDarko? never heard of em

SpnngDblA.C.T., Sunday, 8 January 2006 08:05 (twenty years ago)

but just to say the only reason this guy has an album coming out on big dada is the diplo connection.

Spank Rock is a group, not a guy, and I'd imagine the reason they have an album coming out on Big Dada is that Will who runs the label puts out what he likes, and has been bigging up this stuff for ages (i remember him telling me about Diplo a few years back, when Diplo was sending him demos).

i am not a nugget (stevie), Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

On first listen I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying BMore Gutter Music. I could do without the rather suspect "Orioles logo" on the cover, but damnit, this is a good dance mix. And honestly, I don't think it makes much difference whether I get turned on to this sort of thing by slumming white DJs or "authentic" black djs, and it doesn't matter how much class consciousness and skepticism I have about the whole thing -- I'll still be a white guy living in a gentrifying neighborhood, listening to "gutter music" from a safe perch.

ninjuzky, Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

There's a good piece in the current issue of Clash magazine about Baltimore Club... The guy has interviewed Diplo/Spank Rock/LaCrate etc. and none of them want owt to do with the scene! They basically spend the article distancing themselves from any notion of Baltimore Club.

Leeroy, Friday, 20 January 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

that might be because none of them have anything to do with it.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 January 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

1. they are all from Baltimore originally, its where they met.
2. Spank Rock is the band, the MC is MC Spankrock , or MC Cool Disco Spankrock
3. Spank Rock appreciates Baltimore Club- but doesn't consider themselves B Club.

if you gonna talk- know what you are talking about.

BTW I'm pretty sure at least some of the people involved in that CD are directly involved with Baltimore Club Music (Unruly is a name I've seen)

yeah, Scottie B (founder of Unruly Records, pretty important figure in the history of club music, also posted here on ILM a few times) had some kind of exec producer type credit on that "Bmore Gutter Music" thing, although I don't know if he had any kind of hands-on involvement or just kind of gave them his endorsement. I think I offended him one time when I questioned why he's messing around with Hollertronix people.

Guns don't kill people. Chuck Norris kills People., Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

haha yes I'm very proud of you for downloading all that club music, that's really gonna keep the scene afloat! I've got no problem with out-of-towners feeling the music, but all these "early adapters" jumping on it (and not actually giving much/any money to the people actually making it) just means a year or two down the road they'll proclaim it a dead scene and the local DJs/artists/producers won't have much to show for it besides a bunch of magazine clippings.

Frankly Spankro sounds like he looks, squeezing geek chic for all its nu-cool cache. This is something lots of people can relate to, we all want to rock horn rims while the girl twirls her assets right next to us on-stage.

So, indie-rock kids.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 27 September 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

Not necessarily. There's a lot of kids who like/liked corny indie rap that don't fuck with rock music at all. Obviously there's plenty of crossover there, though.
