music you can't give away

we've probably done this but damned if i can find the thread.

is there any music you've been sitting on only because you can't sell it or give it away? i have a few lps and cds that have done the rounds of the local record stores several times with no takers, and that have been placed on ebay also without result.

for example:

all three magic hour cds
ruth brown box set
bunch of r.e.m. cds
undertones best-of
stuart moxham cd

does anyone else have stuff that falls into this category?

i'm all but ready to toss this stuff in the garbage.

strangely i begin to harbor personal resentments against the cds i can't get rid of and all who i associate with them.

anyone want a lata mangeshkar cassette box set? i mean the music's great but...cassettes?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 24 December 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

i tossed most of my cassettes in the trash a few years ago but i can't quite let that one go.

What Stuart Moxham CD was it? I've got lots of music I can't get rid of, most of it because it's on LP, and some because it's, like, Spear of Destiny, etc. and nobody cares.

Indie hip hop's a killer in this area: Cella Dwellas, various Duckdown artists, Vast Aire, RA the Rugged Man, All Natural, High & Mighty, etc...

the stuart moxham cd is "fine tuning." if you want it give me a holler; frankly it's completely boring.

i had a few other moxham cds which miraculously used record stores bought.

Late 80s/Early 90s pre-Britpop UK indie is a real weird one for this.

You really cannot give away Wonder Stuff CDs, but PWEI, Sultans of Ping and Adorable CDs are worth at least £10 each.

One of the reasons I've put off the Big Music Purge (TM) is that I've got approximately 3,782 dancey CDs (many of them cover-mounts from Mixmag, Muzik, et al) that have no resale value whatsoever.

Maybe we can turn this thread into a swap meet of sorts: one Japanese import of The Wonder Stuff's "Unbearable" for one "Now That's What I Call 70 Minutes Of Interchangable Speed Garage Tracks That Were Dated The Moment This Disc Got Pressed (Volume 3)".

One album that really shouldn't be so cheap:

Joan Jett - Bad Reputation on vinyl - I got it for £2.50 inc delivery on Ebay. The CD I think is quite expensive because it's import only or something.

Amateurist, your stuff all looks pretty good. I can't get rid of Willard Grant Conspiracy and stuff like that.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 24 December 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

What label did a Ruth Brown *box*, by the way?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 24 December 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Talk of the great Lata Mangeshkar reminds me I have a load (and i mean a load - the man did over 100 volumes) of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan stuff - much of which is terrific and which I got for small cash payments at my local top notch Asian music shop (called - amazingly - Friends Electric) - I doubt I could sell them - but again that's more to do with format then content.

I woulda had the Undertones of you - but I already got it. You don't like?

the ruth brown thing...is on atlantic.

xpost -

Thanks - I have "Fine Tuning" already; I had all but forgotten about him until seeing that one in a sale bin. I really like it, but I can see, given that it's pretty low-key and that there are likely piles and piles of CDs in a similar vein that I just never hear, how it could strike someone as boring.

An area in which I have music I can't get rid of is production music where there'd be no DJ interest, like historical period-imitations, pastoral themes, children's music and 80's-era synthesizer easy-listening.

Pangolino 2, Saturday, 24 December 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Goddam, Echobelly's "On" - been trying to sneak that into piles for almost ten years now

Mr B, Saturday, 24 December 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

bunch of mid90s alternacrap, some of which is pretty good, stuff like no doubt, green day, harvey danger, presidents of the US

, but PWEI, Sultans of Ping and Adorable CDs are worth at least £10 each.

Who the hell buys Sultans Of Ping stuff?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 24 December 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i've got a ton of these. someone gave me a copy of bob marley's legend a few years ago and i've never been able to get rid of it since every used cd store already has 30 copies. i've also failed at unloading any of the stone roses' back catalog.
