So has anyone heard this yet?

The magazine is kind of hit or miss to me.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)
I'll read it depending on who the features are on.
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah I think my biggest issue with it, isn't the writing (which is pretty uniformly good) but more that I don't really care that much about soul/funk or crate-digging so the part of the magazine that isn't on reggae or hip hop I tend to just skim. But that's not their fault any more than it is the Wire's for being into musique concrete and modern composition and experimental stuff than I could care for.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)
yeah I read it about as much as I read the Wire.
Their Too $hort interview was pretty great.
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah that was good issue. It had a long Betty Davis piece too.
The Wire is more frustrating, because a lot of the stuff I am really really into gets token genre sections (dub/reggae/critical beats/hip hop) and then basically is ignored in the rest of the magazine.

what aspect of mag does anthology book emphasize, if any?
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)
i don't know but i want it
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)
i think i hate funk
― deej, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)
it's basically the best of the first 5 issues. if you're a fan of the mag and don't have the early issues it's worth your time, albeit pricey.

It's nearly $40 isn't it? I wonder if a soft-cover version is in the offing.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
this mag is great.
― hstencil, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

― jaxon, Monday, 26 November 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't bought this magazine in years although i pick it up every time i see it at a store.
― jaxon, Monday, 26 November 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)
It's potential birthday gift for an eclectic friend, I hafta figure out if it's in the budget.
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)
"eclectic"

eccentric garbage, amirite?
― moonship journey to baja, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)
i keep buying this even though i only really look at the pictures.
there is a column called "weird americana" or something like that that covers private press free electronic / free folk / free jazz stuff from the 70s. things like iasos and moondogg and brother ah and what not. killer, killer column.
i also really like the "5 records" thing they have in the front of each article. very tightly written.
the interviews with old jazz dudes are pretty good, even though it's generally a lot of the same experiences.
― moonship journey to baja, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)
Awesome inteviews with all the guys besides Mtume who were with miles davis around the On the Corner days. I learned a lot about their process then.
― filthy dylan, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)
I think this magazine is better than JaXoN gives it credit for (although the "look at us dust off breaks and samples" stuff when it occurs is pretty annoying.) The picture thing last issue and the Miles sidemen interviews (okay some of it was a retread of the Electric Miles book I have, but still) were really really good. And yeah the five records things are usually really good.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 26 November 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)
i still think the magazine's great, (like you) i just have little interest in the music they're presenting, even though it's sort of catered directly at me. i mean, i still only buy old records that are usually funky and often because i know there's a sample on it. i just feel that they're sort of not hip to what's "cool" right now. as is with most beat diggers and hip hop headz, they're stuck in this golden age of breaks and samples and how hip hop and funk should be. if it were really up to the times, they'd have more sections on disco and euro funky rock and cosmic (i think they actually had a baldelli interview?) and folk and just more obscure genres. or maybe they do and i just haven't actually read it in a while
― jaxon, Monday, 26 November 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)
hoos, go eat shit
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 November 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)
Dude I subscribe to the magazine. It was as much a self-depricatory comment as it was a playful jab at yr gift-giving subject.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 26 November 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)
Didn't mean to offend you though, apologies.
I'm sayin, no personal attack intended, just referencing another prominent shirtless dude whose circumstance I found amusing.
― deej, Monday, 26 November 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)
lol jk hoos
almost quoted that, actually! then i figured dude doesn't read snap etc
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 26 November 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)
they had a great arthur russell piece a few issues back.
― haitch, Monday, 26 November 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)
theyre like the black music mojo really, i just wish the writing was better sometimes.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 26 November 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)
The book is hard to find in NYC brix-and-mortar stores
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 November 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)
I find this thing consistently good.
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 30 November 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)
Wax Poetics turned me on to Little Howlin Wolf. Who'da thunk it?
― Trip Maker, Friday, 30 November 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)
nice feature a few months ago about Canberra, who did the original version of "Shack Up"...ditto the Arthur Russell story...
― henry s, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
which is to say, Banbarra...("Shack Up" was most certainly not recorded by the capital of Australia)...
― henry s, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
be cool if it was, though
― henry s, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)
its a bit expensive too.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)
Wax Poetics or the Wax Poetics book?
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)
since I couldn't find the book in time, I got my friend a John Peel bio.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)
xpost - not seen the book (although im going to try and find it now), so the mag.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)
How much is it in the UK? It's what $8-9 here in the US which is about normal for a specialist mag like that.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)
Could easily be £5.99 here then. £4.99 at the cheapest. I think Borders sells it.
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)
What does something like the Wire sell for in the UK?
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)
I was pretty religious on reading this cover to cover the first ten issues or so .... then it got a little too much like "on day 15 of recording Earth Rot, David Axelrod salted and peppered his eggs but did not finish his bacon ... and was said to give the waitress only a 9 percent tip!!"
― dmr, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)
j/k
they cover a lotta great stuff (the private press column vahid mentioned is really good) but I found I was never finishing the articles even when it was a topic that really interested me

― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)
the Rick James issue was fuckin great.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)
yeah it was and i've bought every issue since mostly because of the same reasons baja lists. had higher hopes for the photog issue TBH.
