OPO: Galaxie 500

I've been listening to their three album a lot lately and I'm trying to pick a favorite song by them. So many to choose from and it changes so often! It used to be Fourth of July because of its one-liners and that great epic ending but lately I'm leaning towards something off of On Fire. Strange or Another Day are great and Isn't It a Pity was what turned me on to them. The other day though I listened to Here She Comes Now and after previously thinking it was a just a "pretty good" cover I reevaluated it and I think its currently my favorite Galaxie 500 song. It also made me listen to the VU original again and the cover put it to shame. They transormed the original from a little throwaway on White Light to this absolutely gorgeous ballad. How great are the backing vocals coming in on the chorus the second time?

'ceremony'

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 25 December 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

tugboat

Stephen C (ihope), Sunday, 25 December 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Their songs are so similar, it makes this tough. I'll go When Will You Come Home

garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Sunday, 25 December 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Ummm... "4th of July."

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

Snowstorm

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

I hate the OPO threads because I can never Pick Only One.

Force me at gunpoint and I'll say "Temperature's Rising".

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

Or "Pictures".

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

damn. on fire is my favorite album...

i guess i'll go with "Snowstorm," right now in observance of christhmus.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

am i allowed to say "don't let our youth go to waste"?

inger lynde (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

i can't answer this question. if it was 'destroy only one' the answer would be 'flowers'

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Sunday, 25 December 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

i take offense to calling "here she comes now" a "throwaway" track...

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Sunday, 25 December 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

it's impossible for me to only pick one galaxie 500 song, and i don't think picking ten would be much easier. but i think "king of spain" would be my "destroy only one."

spastic heritage (spastic heritage), Sunday, 25 December 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

When Will You Come Home, through it's video on MTV, is what introduced me to them, so I always come back to that. The guitar solos just totally do it for me. Either that or Another Day, which I find just heartbreaking and love Naomi's singing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 25 December 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

aw, what's wrong with flowers?

x-post.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 25 December 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's bonkers. i love g500, but i actually don't think they did a very good job with that one. but don't let our youth is lovely, as jody points out.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 25 December 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

another vote for tugboat

TRGEE, Sunday, 25 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Tugboat--specifically, the last minute and a half of it. Probably the best two-chord song I've heard.

ajlee, Sunday, 25 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I always loved how unhinged the guitar riff in "Strange" sounds coming right after "Snowstorm"... that Dean's voice cracks a couple times during the song only helps.

... but I'm also tempted to go with their cover of "Cheese and Onions."

Stephen C (ihope), Sunday, 25 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

gotta be "Way Up High".

sleeve, away, Sunday, 25 December 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

sorta tough but it's gotta be "Fourth of July"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 25 December 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

easy "Strange"

ShawShank Rambo Connection (Carey), Sunday, 25 December 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Another vote for the "Ceremony" cover.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

"Temperature's Rising"

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I think I would say Fourth Of July. Just everything about it is so perfectly on.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

"Blue Thunder"

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

ok...not their best song but i feel it is the best cover of a new order song ever is the version of "ceremony" they released.

elgin again (golf and games), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

"Blue Thunder," though not the version ruined by saxaphone.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

"Tell Me"

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Listen, the Snow is Falling

Mary (Mary), Friday, 30 December 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

haha, I just listened to that on Copenhagen not a half-hour ago, and actually thought about posting it here. nice coincidence.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 30 December 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

"Tugboat"

mcd (mcd), Friday, 30 December 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

god this band just keep blowing me away, 20 years after I first heard them. right now, the guitar solo on "Victory Garden" is my fave solo of all time.

Has there ever been a poll of Galaxie 500 cover versions??

Duke, Sunday, 4 April 2010 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

I remember making up a mix cd of Galaxie 500/Luna covers and thinking "Christ! This is pretty much a list of my favourite bands!"

AnotherDeadHero, Sunday, 4 April 2010 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

Surprised, looking this over, that "Oblivious" got no takers.

Michael Train, Sunday, 4 April 2010 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

'Strange'

without a fucking doubt

How weird are you? This planet wasn't built for you. Bottled in this song

Fer Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Sunday, 4 April 2010 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

the version of "Summertime" on the Copenhagen live disc is out of this fucking world.

Duke, Sunday, 4 April 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

"Tugboat"

Spencer Chow, Monday, 5 April 2010 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

'plastic bird' is really getting under my skin these days. though about half a dozen of their songs have been my favourite at some stage.

charlie h, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

i think i'll settle on king of spain pt 2

final ritchie (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 03:10 (fifteen years ago)
