anywone hear OCS yet? it's john dwyer from coachwhips in a decidedly more subdued vein, beautiful old-timey folk + electronic noise. The collection "3 and 4" is aces...anyone know if there's a "1 and 2" ?

limb&trunks, Sunday, 25 December 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah I saw them about six months ago. it was okay.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 25 December 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

it's ok ... but i still miss coachwhips. i never got a chance to see them live

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Sunday, 25 December 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

he's a nice guy. but he's tired.

nein Socken (nein Socken), Sunday, 25 December 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

1 and 2 is also good....

bobby.lasers (bobby.lasers), Sunday, 25 December 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

the cover of 2 might be one of my favorites from that year

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

but as my friend put it, when i played it for him: "do you already own every john fahey album? no? then you need to get them. yes? then you don't need this OCS cd"

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

the only recorded stuff i've heard are the clips on the aquarius site. but i saw them live a bit ago and i really, really liked it. very pretty 60s melodies hiding under a bunch of weird noise

jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 25 December 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah, pretty and surprisingly (for a dwyer joint) understated. i don't get the fahey comparison/dis...OCS is about vocal melody.

limbs&trunks, Sunday, 25 December 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

if you haven't heard 1+2 you won't get the fahey comparison. 1+2 is lots of freeform exploratory acoustic fingerpicking.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

i don't mean freeform like unstructured, i mean loose and open and spacious. almost like a wyndham hill record, but noize-y!

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 25 December 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

ah, okay, didn't realize that about 1&2. Nice cover art tho, absolutely.

limbs&trunks, Sunday, 25 December 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

they didn't sound like fahey live. glad to hear there is some more variation to it all.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 26 December 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
ARTIST: Pink Floyd
TITLE: Fearless
ALBUM: Meddle

You say the hill's too steep to climb, climbing
You say you'd like to see me try, climbing
You pick the place and I'll choose the time
And I'll climb that hill in my own way
Just wait a while for the right day
And as I rise above the tree line and the clouds
I look down, hearing the sound of the things you said today

Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd, smiling
Merciless, the magistrate turns 'round, frowning
And who's the fool who wears the crown
Go down in your own way
And everyday is the right day
And as you rise above the fear lines in his brow
You look down, hear the sound of the faces in the crowd

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Isn't everybody bored with folk music by now?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

not if it's PSYCHEDELIC folk music! or FREE folk music. or AVANT FOLK music.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Free folk music? Like some auld geezer in a pub standing up and singing "Danny Boy"?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

free like improvised.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

That's exactly what I said

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

when i saw them, it wasn't very folky at all. dwyer played an electric with a bunch of effects and there was someone playing a saw. it was all very dreamy.

team jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

OCS is NVG

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I think I asked this on the ILX Sandbox a while back, but have The Oh Sees released the great shit they played at CMJ 2006?

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, at least some of that is on their latest studio album, Thee Oh Sees Sucks Blood, on their Castle Face label; was out of print for a while, but it's back:can be bought as disc I forget where (see their mypspace) and as downloads (whole album or track by track) on eMusic and Amazon (for instance)(also a couple EPs as downloads on Amazon). Looks like you can still download "It Killed Mom" for free on PaperThinWalls, or just stream, and of course there's a review, which talks about several other tracks on the album (which is verrry nice in its own peculiar way):
