deadair (deadair), Monday, 26 December 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I think you mean THE hotbed of new music.
(I heard Cedar Rapids was more happening...)

js (honestengine), Monday, 26 December 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

ha, yeah.

there are some good things coming out of Iowa City and the Quad Cities too. i can only name like 3 local bands to Des Moines that are worth a shit.

deadair (deadair), Monday, 26 December 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

"hi here"

retrogurl, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

hello there

Pablo (Pablo A), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Hi there!

(I don't "really" "know" "anyone" here either. Been posting for a coupla years tho.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

Hi dere and ditto.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

Hello. I've been posting on and off for a couple of years but I don't know anyone (probably because I never introduced myself - how rude of me). I only write about fictional music.

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Hi. I started reading and posting occaisionally a few months ago. I'm 18 and I plan on reading and learning a little more before I start posting more frequently.

Matt McEver (mattmc387), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

hello all. I'm also "new". I know nothing about music, but pretend dj minimal techno & things to hypothetical people in my bedroom. I owe quite a lot to some of the wonderful people here. Tim Finney & Stirmonster especially. I once made a yousendit of a Villalobos song and when I grow up I want to be a tree.

mark burton (kingofnothing), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

well, hello all. i think i'm going to post here more... i'm really sick of the musical discussions on some of the other boards i frequent.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Can us old boys say hello here too? I've been posting here for four years - more ILE and ILComics these days - and I've met over a hundred people through ILX. London is a good place for that. Currently I mainly like pop and hip hop, historically I love soul, punk, reggae and lots more. I'm one of ILX's oldies, at 46. I've never had any pro connection with music (I am a systems analyst), but I do write for Freaky Trigger now and then, though mostly not about music.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

oh, i guess i should pop that in there... i'm 27.

deadair (deadair), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Hi Jake. I wrote a review for IW once and then you sent me a bunch of horrible cds to write about and I couldn't bring myself to say anything about any of them... so I went underground in hopes that you'd never find me. But you found me!

Anyway, step up from lurker to contributor! You'll be glad you did.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm 19, and have been here since I was 16. I usually post with a different name on different threads because I post infrequently and don't like establishing a persona.

Hey!

Now it's hey there, now, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

haha, that's amazing. well, we get better albums now, i swear.

deadair (deadair), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

whassup Jake...I thought you guys repped Ames though!

Mr Straight Toxic (ghostface), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

nope, always been in Des Moines. when i started a buddy of mine from Ames helped out, but that's it.

deadair (deadair), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I found this site by typing in 15 or so randomly chosen words into google and this was the only actual site that came up.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

never be sheepish!

never, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

wait, ILM came up or my site?

deadair (deadair), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Stephen C (ihope), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Hi Jake.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

hello alex.

ok, now the hellos are out of the way. now let's talk about what you are listening to right now. me - Hudson Bell (when the sun is the moon)

deadair (deadair), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Jake, we've probably been at some of the same shows, then. I've been living in Des Moines for about the last 24 years, with some school-year stints in Ames for four years.

It's nice to know there are a few other people in the area on ILM, although lately I've had the suspicion that there are more people in the area that share my tastes than I thought.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i'm sure we have mike, although i haven't made it out to a show in a while. we had a party for the website down at the Mews in August, it went pretty well... about 120 people showed up. (and for des moines, and the kind of bands that played, that's good). did you make it to that? if so, i was the one working the door that night.

but yeah, it is good to see that there are people in DSM that actually like music. what kind of stuff are you into?

deadair (deadair), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

I didn't make it out to that one, unfortunately. I think I was in Minneapolis at the time. I've been pretty lackluster at seeing shows this year -- I think I made it up to the m-shop a couple times, and to the mews fairly often in the first half of the year, although nothing really jumps out. I'm not much of an indie kid, unfortunately. I did enjoy the Caribou/Junior Boys show and usually catch anything Mountain Goats related.

A few friends usually catch John Vanderslice any time he comes through, along with things like The Album Leaf and Unwed Sailor, so if those tours were this year, I might have been there. I missed Of Montreal during this past tour due to being downtown but not going to the venue in time. Other than that, I think the last thing I saw was Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys, although that was during some weird four-bands-on-a-tuesday booking problem and I ended up being one of the last people there. After that, not so many things during the week when I have to work at 8am.

And yes, I've turned this into my space for dumping my thoughts out since I really can't remember what I've seen!

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

i was at that Caribou/Junior Boys show... besides the "power problem" that was a great show. i had a new respect for Caribou after that.

yeah, there really hasen't been a ton of great shows lately. and it doesn't help that when a good band does roll through that no one shows up. i know the Lowlights had a terrible turn out, which is too bad. but the mews doesn't really promote that well.

(and the DMMC is a joke)

deadair (deadair), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Hi! I've posted about 5 or 10 times to this site, and I never seem to have a recognizable internet persona. I don't expect anyone to "know" me in a year. Um, I live in Seattle, go to college in Minneapolis. I really like the Mekons and old comic strips.

clotpoll, Thursday, 29 December 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

Um, I live in Seattle, go to college in Minneapolis.

Helluva commute, that one.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 December 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Damn straight. And wow, I'm a moron. I've been in college 18 months and haven't figured out that I go to college in St. Paul. Christ. Well, perhaps I will develop a recognizable persona. Anyway, Seattle>Minneapolis>St. Paul, which is why I prefer to say I live in Seattle.

clotpoll, Thursday, 29 December 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

i'm sheepish - because i hate sheepfucking. buncha snobs on this board if you don't know the right breed of welsh sheepass.

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 29 December 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

good point.

deadair (deadair), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Hello, I've been lurking for awhile and I'd like to introduce myself. I'm 29 yrs old and I live in Albuquerque, NM. I've been listening to older Axis rock ('70s german and '80s japanese) this year. This is a great board, you have all turned me on to some great artists/genres/labels (Sonny Sharrock, Alice Coltrane, Konono No.1, Kompakt stuff, the Ethiopiques series, Morricone, etc.). Thank you very much!

Des Moines, eh? My girlfriend is there right now -- she's from Waukee.

I'm Marc. Nice to meet you.

marc h. (marc h.), Thursday, 29 December 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

she just back to visit family? where do you live marc?

deadair (deadair), Thursday, 29 December 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm 29 yrs old and I live in Albuquerque, NM.

nice. i have relatives there. i've visited a few times and each time was a very different adventure.

born-again christians in the old corral (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 30 December 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

yep just visiting family. she and i live in nyc now, actually. but i've been to des moines with her a number of times now -- i've even heard live music there, at java joe's.

marc h. (marc h.), Friday, 30 December 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

oh shit. it's not THAT bad here anymore. there are actual clubs believe it or not. but they are shit too. like, for example, The Hold Steady came here and all of 8 people showed up. pretty sad. i told Craig that i felt really bad. he seemed ok, hung out with Steve from French Kiss too. i think they were more about having good time anyway. and they had a sold out show in MPLS the next night.

deadair (deadair), Friday, 30 December 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

i hear downtown des moines is really coming up, actually. maybe that will help attract young people/concertgoers?

marc h. (marc h.), Friday, 30 December 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

it is, but there are still plenty of people that are all for the suburban spral around here. it's kinda sick. there are great, unused buildings in the downtown area while a huge mall is built in the middle of a feild 20 miles outside of the city. a very backwords way of city planning if you ask me... but i guess what do i know.

also, if you want a little hint as to how much of a joke the Des Moines music scene is, i'd suggest taking a look at this site - www.desmoinesmc.com i could go on and on about these people.

(ie- for one, they want to start a sxsw style conferance in des moines... and the head of this non-profit was thinking he could start it this upcoming summer.)

deadair (deadair), Friday, 30 December 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Hi dere, people

“HI EVERYBODY!”

“HI KRUSTY!”

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 30 December 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

i guess i could do the introduction thing, since i've been lurking/sporadically posting on here for a while now. i'm a 23-year-old dude that lives somewhere between harrisburg and york, pennsylvania. i've heard a few thousand albums and fully intend to hear thousands more. uh, what else... i just finished listening to the second half of kate bush's aerial for the 27897th time. (note: number may be completely made up.)

spastic heritage (spastic heritage), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I never bothered with an intro, I guess because I have no intention of making a home out of this place.
It's a useful watercooler for sure, but this seems an established territory that I don't know if i have energy for to dig my own niche in.

Female, 21, Part-time Journlism Major putting in hours at a print mag in DC. Current dillemma is UPenn or College Park transfer. I like music, I don't believe in the concept of celebrity, so although I breathe the stuff: I fully respect a gifted musician but I find any sort of worship excessive.
Intelligent sound provokes...mm, I don't know, further insight into how this world works, and if you're the optimist, may provide for a way to fix it.

I'm not always so serious, not always so fact-checked, and enjoy a well-rounded opinion.
Hello, good people.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Friday, 30 December 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I never bothered with an intro, I guess because I have no intention of making a home out of this place.

Two things:

1. Haha, neither did I, and look, it's three years later.

2. My contention is still that the people who actually bother with an introduction before posting are the ones that are least likely to stick around. The rest just hit the ground running.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 30 December 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

(That said, hello everyone :))

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 30 December 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I for one wish more of the newbies stuck around, I really do. I think this place would be a lot more interesting. The snobbiness of many of the frequent posters gets irritating after awhile, and then finally just dreadfully boring. It also seems to me there are less folks posting here these days than there were maybe 6-8 months ago. I could be wrong, though.

Tomato Voyeur (Bimble...), Friday, 30 December 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to introduce myself again (for the third time).

Hi. I'm a stupid 16-year-old from Columbia, Missouri. I make music. Recently, when asked what genre it is, i respond with 'crap.' I just recently started making films. I like choppy sentences.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I'm Curtis, age 18. My first post on this board, made a little over 3 years ago (when I was 14), is embarrassing. I've never met anyone on this board in person, nor have I ever spoken with any ILXor through IM/email. (Except maybe jess once because I was asking him to host something, I think.) I'm not a music writer, nor do I plan to be, because my relationship with the written word is tedious and shaky. I like the Chameleons and androgyny. I hope to be a synth-pop star someday. My favorite color is black (like my soul, obv. (not in the racial sense (in the goth sense))). I like cats. Can we have more threads like this?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 31 December 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

i thought i was the only one who never spoke to anyone on here away from here. although i don't really talk to anyone on here either. i wish the sun would shine one day in detroit. i've been here(on ILM) from the start and i don't know a thing about anyone here, well one person, but i sorta knew her before she was here i think and i turned down a chance to meet her anyhow and really i don't know much about her either.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 31 December 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

I just know in my heart that you're all loonies and rapists. The only people who live near me are blount and ethan, I think, and I fear them most of all. (j/k bros)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 31 December 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

narrow, much? to be fair, some of us just don't have time for both. I mean, it's kind of a bitch to find any time at all to pillage when you've got the repeated washing of your hands to dote on.
