He plays a pimp. Here's a link; the photo's too big and too grainy to post here:

Must...see...this...film....

He's not a pimp, he's a john. The film is great (although the sound at the theater I saw it made it nearly impossible to hear everything.)

Did Ferry sing "Mother of Pearl"?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Haha no. I don't think there are any Roxy or Ferry songs in the movie.

I saw it finally the other night, due to a good friend's recommendation which I just decided on a whim I was going to dig up from the recent past and honor.

Well of course you and I are on the same wavelength again, Alfred.

I didn't think it was that great of a movie, though. I wanted to like the main character more than I found it possible to like him/her. Bryan Ferry did a pretty good job, though, I must say. I also liked the magician guy - he seemed really familiar an actor - anyone know who he was? I didn't stay to look at the credits, though. I wanted the movie to end, and when it did, I was more than ready to go.

How many lines did he have?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Is it true that Ferry was once considered for James Bond?

I've read about this rumor, yes. And he played Malvolio in a college production of Romeo & Juliet!

BUT WAS IT A BIG PART?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 6 January 2006 00:15 (twenty years ago)

In B.O.P.? No. A few lines, couple minutes of screentime tops.

Ferry us nasty cool in it, and overall, it's an excellent film. It's bit part but makes an impression.

The magician is Stephen Rae, an actor who always steals the show whatever he appears in. Lovely film, Jordan's best since "Butcher Boy". I generally worship his work though.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 6 January 2006 04:30 (twenty years ago)

Stephen Rea, more accurately.

I liked it quite a bit, even though Cillian Murphy's performance didn't bowl me over like I'd hoped it would. I guess I was looking for a glam-era Quentin Crisp, but his character just didn't do it for me. Also, there was this very cutesy tone at times that I could have done without (ugh, those talking birds). i guess it was supposed to contrast to the violence of the times and the sadness of the main character, but it was just grating, really.

But there's a lot to love about it--a grizzled Gavin Friday as the love interest--this exotic Gary Glitter/Sensational Alex Harvey/IRA gunrunner hybrid, Brendan Gleeson as a drunken, belligerent Womble, the Bryan Ferry character: Mr. Silky String, Stephen Rea as a creepy but charming magician. And the fantastic clothes! The soundtrack's great, too--Middle of the Road, Bobby Goldsboro, "Madame George". "Sugar Baby Love". I loved the way the kids at the clubs did that early 70s Top of the Pops shimmy dance.
