and they are great live. it's amazing how huge they can get their sound in a live setting. not make your ears bleed loud, just a huge wash of sound.

I've yet to hear Kayo Dot; things being released on Tzadik generally means that it takes years for me to hear it; if at all.
I think Scott Seward started a thread on Kayo Dot quite recently.So I LIke Totally Think This Band Kayo Dot Is Ripping Off MY Fave EmoDeathJazz Band Maudlin Of The Well And It Turns Out That Kayo Dot Sorta Is Maudlin Of The Well! Holy Shit, It's Do Exciting! ILM Search Function Would Have Told Me This, But Who Thought To Look? Not Me! The New Album Rulez!

the solo album is way more challenging of a listen. more about textures than actual song structure... i can see why people wouldn't enjoy it. especially if they think they are getting another Kayo Dot esc album.
and yes, Dark Symphonies did just re-release two of the three Maudlin albums. extra tracks and all.
