so i got the new album from these guys and i love it. it's coming out on Robotic Empire, the first one was on Zorn's label. epic and amazing, it puts all that constellation post-rock to shame.

has anyone else heard it? i'd love some other feedback on this one.

saw them open for khanate here in boston...one of the best live shows of the year. go see them if you can.

yeah, comes out in a few weeks. it's great. not as heavy as the last one, but somehow more angry.

and they are great live. it's amazing how huge they can get their sound in a live setting. not make your ears bleed loud, just a huge wash of sound.

Shit, I would have gone to Hattiesburg to see them live if I'd known about the tour. Hopefully in '06. They were one of my favorite discoveries of the last year.

They are really fantastic - so heavy and so surreal at the same time - Toby Driver's new solo album on Tzadik is also really good. It's more ambient and moody but in a really effective way.

yeah, that solo album is great stuff. pretty different from Kayo Dot stuff too.

I think Scott Seward started a thread on Kayo Dot quite recently.

Hrm, interesting to hear the solo album's good, as I'd only heard a couple of opinions so far, and both were deeply negative.
Make sure to check out the pre-Kayo Dot stuff too, the equally dubiously-named Maudlin Of The Well. I believe Dark Symphonies recently re-released those three albums, though they may well be a limited run.

I've yet to hear Kayo Dot; things being released on Tzadik generally means that it takes years for me to hear it; if at all.

So I LIke Totally Think This Band Kayo Dot Is Ripping Off MY Fave EmoDeathJazz Band Maudlin Of The Well And It Turns Out That Kayo Dot Sorta Is Maudlin Of The Well! Holy Shit, It's Do Exciting! ILM Search Function Would Have Told Me This, But Who Thought To Look? Not Me! The New Album Rulez!

thanks for the link to that thread... sorry, i should have done a search.

the solo album is way more challenging of a listen. more about textures than actual song structure... i can see why people wouldn't enjoy it. especially if they think they are getting another Kayo Dot esc album.

and yes, Dark Symphonies did just re-release two of the three Maudlin albums. extra tracks and all.
