I'm going there for MacWorld and want to hit up some good stores. Suggestions? With approximate locations?

Amoeba on Haight!!!

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

Agreed. You ONLY need to go to Amoeba. I was in SF in 2002 on holidays and blew about $300 in an hour at Amoeba

It's a much different experience but you should check out Aquarius in the Mission as well -- one of the best small record stores around.

Open Mind on Divisadero is pretty high quality as well, but in general nothing beats Amoeba and Aquarius.

lock thread.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

I was in SF about two years ago and I couldn't find Open Mind -- I thought maybe it moved or something. When I lived there (which was the late 90s) that was by far my favorite place for used vinyl.

And while you're there, you should check out the BEST burrito in the Mission, at...

Open Mind = 342 Divisadero St at Page, across from pretty much the only decent comic book store in SF, Comix Experience.

Tacqueria Cancun?

here we go...

It's Pancho Villa people. Cancun's veggie burritos are great too.

I'm a Tonayense man.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

hee hee hee...

Is there a actual term (Like "Shakey's Law" or something) that describes how all threads about SF lead to food?

schwantz, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

And Pancho Villa is nasty. Cold, steamed burritos, with freezing, crappy salsa.

Plus, every time I've been there, it goes like this:

Me: "I'll have an Al Pastor burrito please"
Server: "whakidofb...mumble"
Me: "Sorry?"
Server: "WHAT KIND OF BEANS?!!!!"

schwantz, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

yes pancho villa sucks, I can't eat there after being in there after some festival in the park where the floors were covered in chips and smeared burritos

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

while we are on the subject of SF...........good thrift stores?

elgin again (golf and games), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I like Held Over on Haight Street. Wasteland down the block isn't bad, but can be pricey.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Amoeba is like Ground Zero, but I love Aquarius. It's like an non-snarky Other Music, if such a thing can be said to exist.

Gee, great grammar, Myke. "An non-snarky."

You know what I mean... *sigh*

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

On the thrift store end:

Aardvark strikes a good balance between having old/cool stuff and not being crazily overpriced (a Haight problem).

Mission Thrift on Mission has lots of German deadstock, as does Schauplatz on Valencia. Mission Thrift is cheaper.

If you have a car, the Saver's in Brisbane is a must- hella cheap thrifting can be had there.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

I never been in San Francisco, but I'd really would like to pay visit to Aquarius Records. They seem to carry everything I love most.
Friends had a great time at Amoeba too.

Shopping advice: San Francisco

mikef (mfleming), Friday, 30 December 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Groove Merchant, 687 Haight
BPM Music Factory, 573 Hayes

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Friday, 30 December 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

Less burritos/records, more fashion hookups!

[use of street parade as pivotal set piece] (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 December 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't think that address for BPM is correct anymore. It is now on Fillmore at Hayes, I just know it isn't 573 that far up on Hayes.

svend (svend), Friday, 30 December 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

I like Open Mind Music and Amoeba.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 30 December 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

amoeba rocked my clock.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 30 December 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
revive 'cause I'm going to California next week and would like to do some shopping.

Anything else I should hit besides Amoeba and Aquarius? Also, a question for Drew or anyone - I looked Aardvark up but it seems to be a bookstore, are there records as well? I'm mostly looking for vinyl of all kinds/genres that's under $8 and maybe a smattering of rare stuff in the punk, postpunk and early industrial field. I hear that you can get Nonesuch Explorer Series records for cheap down there as well. Mmmmm.

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 9 June 2006 23:27 (twenty years ago)

aardvark's is actually a used clothing store in the haight. and yeah, there's an Aardvark bookstore in the castro.. nothing special tho

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Saturday, 10 June 2006 03:43 (twenty years ago)

my favorite store is Grooves on Market. all used vinyl and the cutest lil ol' guy Ray owns the place and tells you stories of how paul mcartney played him a demo of strawberry fields

jäxøñ (jaxon), Saturday, 10 June 2006 04:30 (twenty years ago)

There's an Amoeba in Berkeley too, close to the Bart stop. The two Bay area Amoebas oughta cover about every single record ever made.
