Dionne all day.

"Don't Make Me Over" beats Midnight Train down with a hammer. A velvet hammer.

I pick Mavis Staples

Dionne, I guess, but I'm so addicted to this one great Gladys Knight track from '80, "Bourgie Bourgie," that I dunno, actually. I'm not a fan of Miss Ross too much.

Now my friend said something interesting the other day as we watched some amazing Dusty Springfield footage--that Dusty embodied the whole Bacharach-esque aesthetic better than Dionne. Strong statement, is it remotely true? I kind of don't think so.

hmm, not sure how to answer that, except to say that i think dusty's "i just don't know what to do myself" destroys dionne's.

"...do WITH myself..."

dusty's bacharach stuff is leaps and bounds better than most of her r&b stuff (which is fine, but it doesn't do anything that wasn't being done just as well by her peers).

but yeah, "i just don't know what to do with myself," definitely one of theeee most OMG HFS WTF vocal performances in all of pop music.

right, "I Just Don't Know What to Do" is fucking great. but I think "Dusty in Memphis" is far superior to her other work, even her later Gamble/Huff stuff, which I've never really loved. I think she's better than Dionne--probably better than anyone we're discussing here--but there's also something vexing in Dusty's work, and it probably comes down to material. Bacharach is great, I find him a tad overrated, a tad too much, a touch bogus in some ways, and I feel the same way about Warwick(e)--tricky and kinda not-there, perfect equivalent of the meretricious aspects of '60s pop. Dusty is just more soulful, and way sexier.

two years pass...

So she has a gospel album out, which I hadn't heard about - came out in February. It's good, really good at points, but I am surprised to learn that what I expect that voice to be singing is so tightly bound to what I've heard it sing before - love songs, pop songs - that it's really hard to hear this without a deep feeling of discord. I think it'd be easier for my brain to process Dionne doing Golden Shower of Hits than "Rise, Shine, Give God the Glory."
