Bootsy Collins needs to stay out of my wardrobe!

Dan Perry, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why, dan ?

That is a magnificent outfit. Incidentally, and you may think this irrelevant, he's a world-class bassist who's played with some of the greatest funksters, and made some good records of his own. Still, that outfit IS a much stronger argument.

Has anyone heard Bootsy's last full-length, "Play With Bootsy"...? (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70404201910340495&sql=A4bkvu3laan7k) I didn't even know this was out. I have "Fresh Outta P University" and like a fair chunk of it, the opening cut is fabooooo! If this new one has anything close to it I'd happily get it...

Play With Bootsy is horrible. The only good track is the title track, but man that is one awesome track. I love Kelli Ali.

Aww man, the Bootsy tribute to James Brown show that was coming to DC got cancelled.

been listening to all the parliament i haven't heard on spotify. 'funkentelechy' is the best imo for sure, motor-booty is ace too, but now i've got 'ahh.. the name is bootsy baby!" playing and it just hits the sweet spot. the grooves sound harder to me, the spacier tracks trip balls, then there's bootsy's vox of course.

Of course that isn't Bootsy playing bass on "Funkentelechy"! Think he's on "Motor Booty" but not sure what tracks.

so does bootsy play drums on "funkentelechy"? there's this drum style i've heard on a few of these tracks... clearly articulated and slow hi-hats, simple bass and snare pattern, very light touch but it swings SO nice; i could listen to that forever. it's on "jam fan" off this boot is made for fonk'n too and the version of "undisco kidd (the girl is bad)" that theo parrish edits. anyone know who this is?

ironically i haven't like been blown away by bootsy's bass playing! i mean, it's good but i don't really get what makes it so great. i just basically love the persona and general sound i think.

desk calendar white out (Matt P), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

like, the hi-hats are syncopated in a way that it sounds like they're basically driving the whole thing.

desk calendar white out (Matt P), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

Well he is credited with drums on "Funkentelechy", but who know? Suspect that's him on "Flash Light" tho

Need to (re)read that, but I remember people talking about meeting that guy back in the late 80s/early 90s iirc. The real Booty came to my neighborhood a few summers ago in an Ono Lennon Imagine bus to host a “funk-off.”
