Tigerbeat6 Comp.

Finally picked this up the other day, on the strength of mp3 listening: i.e., I did not expect to like it in the least, but was utterly converted by at least 40% of the tracks being quite great. Now it is time for a thread where comp owners can battle over the details of what works and what doesn't.

I submit as points of interest: (a) the wondrousness of the Sonic Dragolgo track on program one, (b) Brad Laner's appearing twice, particularly his Medicine Krautrock homage, (c) Noriko Tujiko, (d) Steward's (Stuart Boyracer's) presence representing an interesting alliance on the IDM and home-mechanized indiepop front, plus implying that maybe he's been ahead of Tigerbeat's curve in some senses, (e) Daedelus and DAT Politics and Max Tundra as an excellent program-two triple-punch, and (f) you.

More generally -- much as the conceptual basis of Tigerbeat6 struck me as unpromising -- I think they've assembled an ostensibly IDM comp that has that late-80s college-radio feel I love so much: i.e. basically anything could come next and a lot of it is really just loads of fun. If you scraped the run-of-mill IDglitchinM off of here, I'd be saying that this was the best and most fascinating pop comp in years. That may, however, just be the Sonic Dragolgo track talking: long live Sonic Dragolgo!

Best thing other than Sonic Dragolgo and Noriko Tujiko obviously = the beep at the end of the Max Tundra track.

his Medicine Krautrock homage

Rather -- that was a Can cover, see. ;-)

how about the insanely weird "kick you SC" by fossil? A silly drum machine beat + a schitzo rapping about how he is going to kick someone in varies sections of the targets body? It's one of the most odd tracks I heard all year. It brought me back to my TMBG days.

I could pretend I knew that, but instead let this be a lesson to you all: read liner notes before posting.

I'll have to get this -- don't much care for Electric Company, but some of the other tracks sound interesting. It would suprise me, too, if I loved it, but I like surprises.

No one has mentioned the insanely great bLectum from bLechdom track, so I'll mention it now since it's equal parts insane and great. Although there are some low points over the course of the whole thing, this works better for me than any collection of IDM I've heard so far. If nothing else, I think the comp represents the cross-pollination of the American indie perspective with the (now growing stagnant) IDM form. And that's a good thing.

Through devious means I was the one who got Nitsuh them mp3s that turned his head, and I have to agree with his general take on it. It's definitely a sampler that's more than a sampler, if you will, it has its own insane logic. I've actually got a slew of comps recently, so I think some comparing and contrasting will be in order.

The little chirp backing vocal thingy in the Sonic Dragolgo track is totally mindblowing.

In addition to whats been mentioned, there's also the rambunctious DMX reworking, joseph nothing's "Talvin Singh meets glitch" track, the gold chains track that sounds like what Le Tigre should sound like, and that supposedly Ja-Rule-inspired Cex novelty.

Tigerbeat6 has somewhat been under the shadow of the Kid606 glitchpunk-attitude, which leads some to believe that it's a one-off phenomenon. The compilation is good because it delivers a fun variety of sounds to counter these potential schtick-trappings.

god damn it, nitsuh. i got this recently and it is sweet. i was a bit wary of it---i despise most of the kid606 i've heard, and so i was suspicious of this because of kid606' involvement. but i was clearly wrong. are any of their other comps as good as this one?

Hmmm, yes well let's gloss over that last incisive comment. I see that subscribers to The Wire (not me) got their own Tigerbeat6 comp free with this month's issue. What's on it? Any good?
