After to release in the end of 2001 "The Bootleg Series", Velvet Underground's triple-disc of live recordings, Universal announces to March 5th the release of a special edition of the masterpiece "Velvet Underground & Nico". The double-disc marks the 35 anniversary of the original release. The first disc brings the record's stereo original mix and tracks extracted from Nico's "Chelsea Girl" album released in 1967. Second one brings the original recordings in mono besides 4 remixes and the unreleased song "Miss Joanie Lee", supposed first group's recording.

This'll rule soundly... but what other album needs to get the stereo/mono reissue with extra tracks treatment?

and you can't say Pet Sounds, that ones already been done.

VU & Nico is perfect as is. Last thing it needs is "remix" treatment -- I mean, none of these dudes was a studio wizard or anything. Besides which, if I want Chelsea Girl tracks, I'll just buy the damn album. Which isn't even her best, by the way. Fuckin' stupid idea.

Pet Sounds showed the way for what should have been done with the Beatles re-issues - a single CD could accomodate a shortish early Beatles album in both stereo and mono format.

I've gotta admit this VU reissue doesn't sound so great to me either. Putting tracks from "Chelsea Girl" on there? Why?

Sean, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just can't see buying an album twice, no matter what they tack on there. There's too much stuff that I haven't heard yet.

Hmm. I'm a bit confused re. Chelsea Girls too. Beatles catalogue needs a serious look at, as mentioned above. But what I really want to know is has anyone bought the recent box set of live 71-73 era VU? And just how bad is it? Cuz I'm really confused about Dougie Yule's importance in VU history. Loaded is easily the best Velvets record by a million miles, yet Squeeze is such a mediocre record. Still, an interesting end to the story.

Chelsea Girls tracks are on there because it was the last time Nico worked with Lou Reed, John Cale and Sterling Morrison. It's as close to a sequel to VU&N as the world got (thank God).

How about if they tack on a ticket to see Lou Reed beat up John Cale?

thus far the Velvets' albums have been spared the horror of bonus tracks - but no more, evidently. I think it's time I rushed out and bought a copy of the bonus track free VU&N.

Incorrect, sir. "Loaded" came out in a "Fully Loaded" edition, with many alternate versions and bonus tracks. Also, Nico did work with Cale again, on her "Marble Index" and "Desertshore" albums.

And The End as well -- those three albums together make for one hell of a trilogy, if you will.

you mean the quine tapes thing right? it's pretty good. maybe a bit of overkill for a casual fan, but if you like VU it isn't disappointing.

i also think the "Fully Loaded" version of loaded is worth it, there are some interesting outtakes there. from what i remember (haven;t listened to it that recently) some of the demos saound a lot different than the final versions.

I think he means the Japanese 4cd import "After View" (or something). It's 4 cds (gee) of live post-Loaded VU, which was basically Doug Yule with anonymous backing. I've read that the Yule-era VU wasn't as bad as canon would have you believe but I haven't heard any. The Quine Tapes set is excellent and a steal at 25 bucks. I woulda paid 25 bucks for one of those versions of Sister Ray.

adam, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Yule at Terrastock 4 and oddly enough, he was actually pretty good. He did "What Goes On" and he and Mo Tucker duetted on "I'll Stick With You," otherwise he did his own stuff, I guess.

I would like to lobbt for all my fave single CD album to be rereleased in a new alternate version the way "Fully Loaded" was. If I'm gonna pay $20 for a CD I can't rip, I want my goddamn moneys worth.

yeah, but "Loaded" is rubbish. you'll be singing the praises of "Squeeze" next.

I have a friend who sings the praises of "Squeeze". He actually makes quite a good case for it.

DV, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If it wasn't credited to 'the velvet underground' it wouldn't be nearly so reviled
