1996 REAL HIP HOP BATTLE

deej.. (deej..), Saturday, 31 December 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

The former is a nice goth album, the latter is more entertaining.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 December 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

I think I agree with you.
Prince Paul's seems a bit wider-reaching and more ambitious, also prettier in a sunshine-y summertime way. Shadow's scope seems narrower, which works sometimes, but also a bit more uneven. Do still love "Midnight in a Perfect World" I think.

"Vexual Healing" has such a fun groove!

deej.. (deej..), Saturday, 31 December 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing as funny as "Booty Clap" on ...Endtroducing.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 31 December 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

This doesnt really mean anything but a STRANGE COINCIDENCE: Shadow's is called Endtroducing and Paul's ends with a song called "Outroduction." :-O

deej.. (deej..), Saturday, 31 December 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

in terms of cover art, i've always enjoyed the smear of the record buyer on the right.

"Drinks (Escapism)" = grebt skit.
Prince Paul every time although musically there's a couple of downtempo gems on Entroducing. I don't hink of either as REALer hip hop than say 2Pac's All Eyez On Me (off the top o'the domez, holmes)

blunt (blunt), Saturday, 31 December 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

2Pac suckzorrz my dickzorz

There's nothing as funny as "Booty Clap" on ...Endtroducing.

"eyes as big as Jolly Ranchers" is a pretty great line.

To be honest these albums don't have much to compare each other by -- different coasts, different moods, more or less different generations (albeit by half since Shadow's first beats came about 5 years after Paul's), different mechanics (Paul is a lotta things but turntablist ain't one of 'em). Endtroducing vs. Since We Last Spoke and Psychoanalysis vs. Octagonecologyst seem to skew closer.

xpost - spoken like a true rockist.

Psychoanalysis is much more an instrumental album (for the most part) than Octagon, and SWLS didn't come out in '96!

deej.. (deej..), Saturday, 31 December 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

But how does the actual practice of Psychoanalysis fare compared to repeated listenings of Endtroducing?

TS: Prozac / Xanax ?

i must be a prince paul fan cuz i listened to a prince among thieves TWICE!

Psychoanalysis is much more an instrumental album (for the most part) than Octagon, and SWLS didn't come out in '96!

On the other hand, Endtroducing has (sampled speech aside) no real vocal cuts whatsoever and Psychoanalysis is much closer thematically to the Octagon album. And the fact that I had to go to '04 for a suitable album to compare to Endtroducing is either proof that it's a pretty singular album for its time or evidence that I'm not that interested right now in looking up the Ninja Tune discography.

"Endtroducing" is boring as fuck apart from the first track. You would think with all those funk records D.J Shadow has he could come up with something decent instead of that snoozefest. Fuck him and fuck all those Cali backpackers like Blackalicious and Dilated Peoples he rolls with.

"Psychanalysis" is great. It's all about "drinks".

"Prince amongst thieves" was the last good thing Prince Paul did.

ELLI$, Saturday, 31 December 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Nope. Endtroducing... is one of the best LPs released in the 90s.

because...

blunt (blunt), Monday, 2 January 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Does anybody know where the hell the "eyes as big as jolly ranchers" bit is sampled from?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 2 January 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

For some reason, I feel like I heard somewhere that the "eyes as big as jolly ranchers thing" was one of the few things that wasn't a sample and was done by Gift of Gab or Lyrics Born or another of Shadow's buddies. But I have no idea where I heard this or way of verifying it, so it might be completely wrong.

seven years pass...

Tried to google around to see what folks recommend is the best version of the Psychoanalysis album. Only one vote for the Wordsound version. On the surface it seems to have the best unified "story" based on the tracklisting, but any recommendations here?

Good chuckle on the "goth" comment. Yeah, right.

Everybody I knew who listened to Endtroducing were goths! It's along the same lines with Ninja Tune stuff.
