Musical New Year's Resolutions

"In 2006, I will prove to my fellow ILM posters that I'm not a racist by buying or downloading every hip-hop single and/or album praised by Pitchfork and/or the Voice, and making mm-mm-good faces as I listen to them where other people - black people even! - can see."

"In 2006, I will make the necessary effort to perceive, and respect, the skill and artistry of death metal (or free jazz, or prog, or pop country, or whatever)."

"In 2006, I will finally admit that Coldplay are better than U2, and that that matters for some reason."

Whatever they are, post 'em here.

Mine is this: before 2006 ends, I will sit down and listen to Morton Feldman's String Quartet No. 2 (which is six hours long, spread over 5 CDs) all the way through without stopping, unless the pizza guy rings the doorbell in the middle.

in 2006 i will get off me arse and make more music.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Saturday, 31 December 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to stop making blanket condemnations of mainstream pop and hip hop.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 31 December 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

I will actually write about the albums and singles that interest me, whether I have assignments to review them or not.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 31 December 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

In 2006 I'm gonna listne to better music, and less indie tripe (which especially means music that my housemate Jon Fischer suggests).

Stephen C (ihope), Saturday, 31 December 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to try sharing my more obscure and more lovely music on my site more often. Thrice a week? I dare to dream and find time.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 31 December 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

do it up with obscuro Epicurean stylez.

Mr. Titty Sanskrit (sanskrit), Saturday, 31 December 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

ah shoot, I thought you were the other guy Eppy.

Tofu Man, more frequent updating would be a good resolution.

Mr. Titty Sanskrit (sanskrit), Saturday, 31 December 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

This seems like a resolution I made last year as well, but I would like to start going out salsa dancing again more regularly (at least a couple times a month, but preferably closer to once a week). Otherwise I am quite successful as a consumer of music, and have no plans to learn how to make it in the near future, so no other music-related resolutions.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 31 December 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I plan to listen to internet radio more. I've really missed it.

Tomato Voyeur (Bimble...), Sunday, 1 January 2006 07:11 (twenty years ago)

i'm gonna start closing my narrow mind to music before and after 1984-1987

retrogurl, Sunday, 1 January 2006 07:13 (twenty years ago)

i'm gonna start taking the only i love out to ballroom dancing more often.i hope my wife doesn't catch me.

retrogurl, Sunday, 1 January 2006 07:15 (twenty years ago)

I want to get into jazz.

I want to get into Bach.

I really want to listen to all the cd's I've downloaded in the last five years.

Melson (ArchCarrier), Sunday, 1 January 2006 12:40 (twenty years ago)

I will play that exhausting Mars Volta LP again. And again and again, until I manage to absorb some of it.

I will resist the urge to buy those (post-Maggot Brain) Funkadelic reissues, since the ones I own all sound fabulous to me, and the bonus tracks are mostly inessential remixes and single-edits.

I will check out some Penderecki.

I will not post to ILM late at night while intoxicated. Unless I forget. Which is likely.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 1 January 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

I briefly considered buying nothing, and listening to something entirely new (free, downloads.. but not actual CD/Albums) every single day of the year. I don't think I will do this though. Maybe a week here & there to get refreshed.

I will listen to less techno/electronic, and more world, jazz and whatever... Will go to more live stuff.

I'm gonna ignore ILM a lot more than I've done recently!

oh god cognac, bad idea (fandango), Sunday, 1 January 2006 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Stop closing myself off from listening to so many musicians because they got less then 4 star ratings on AMG.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Sunday, 1 January 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

In 2006, I will discover hip-hop.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 1 January 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

it was jody that killed the beast (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 1 January 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Although it is high time I bought a bunch of Greek CDs.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

eleven years pass...

Even while I continue to obsessively try to squeeze the last musical drops out of 2017*, I hope I put less time and energy into keeping up with current-year music in 2018. It's enough to have enough new-to-me music to keep myself engaged, without having to hunt down everything I might possibly enjoy from the current year. I need to spend more time reading (and not about music). But it will probably depend on how much fatigue continues to be an issue for me. Following music is a good, accessible "hobby" for the quasi-invalid, so my habits may not change. It may depend on what my new Taoist shaman (of sorts) is able to do for me.

*Actually, I suspect I will be continuing to discover good music from this year for years to come, given how much I've already found.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 24 December 2017 18:33 (eight years ago)

in 2018, i will finally get around to listening to kendrick lamar's new record.

bob lefse (rushomancy), Sunday, 24 December 2017 18:38 (eight years ago)

My resolutions are to finish ripping my last couple hundred CDs, make more of an effort to engage with new music and new genres and start to create and share some Spotify playlists.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 2 January 2018 17:03 (eight years ago)

one year passes...

^ How'd you guys do?

My one thing for 2019 would be listening to more music in the car. I probably listened to less music in my car last year than in any other year of my adult life. I try to keep up with too many podcasts/audiobooks.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 17:29 (seven years ago)

I failed to finish ripping - didn't even try, really - but I managed to get a good weekly routine of checking out new stuff and explored new genres. And I did create one Spotify playlist that I shared, so that's something.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:39 (seven years ago)

lol, no more blog

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 22:10 (seven years ago)

I have a few boxes of CDs that I'd love to rip so I can get rid of them.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:07 (seven years ago)

I'm going to stop being so obsessed with finding new all-time favorites. It's not going to happen. I like lots of new music, and my all-time favorites aren't going anywhere.

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 31 January 2019 00:01 (seven years ago)

You just may. I had the same favorite album for ~20 years, only to find a new favorite a few years ago.
