John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 1 January 2006 00:30 (twenty years ago)

I just celebrated British New Year's at GMT -7. The trick is to celebrate more than once!

I want to thank all of you ILMers for making me laugh, think and most of all, pointing me out to great music!

Thanks, all. I wish everyone the best in 2006!

van igloo (van smack), Sunday, 1 January 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm on the west coast as well (going back home tomorrow), which means I get a longer 2005...but that's alright cuz the years are, you know, getting shorter.

Cheers, everyone!

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 1 January 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

I just opened my window at work down the street from Times Square so I could hear the melismatic strains of Mariah Carey. Mostly I hear disconcerting mob noise. I guess I'll sneak out there in a minute to catch the climax of the festivities...

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 1 January 2006 04:45 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to sneak out in another ten-or-so minutes to catch the fireworks. and then come home again very quickly, cuz it's cold.

well, that was exciting. i was outside for exactly 7 minutes. couldn't see the ball from my angle, but saw its reflection in the building across the street. confetti. fireworks. acrid firework smoke. the cheering thousands. (1 million they say on TV, but that's clearly insane, there can't be a million people in Times Square)

now back in the office. just me and a small bottle of moet & chandon. HPPY NW YR everybody.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 1 January 2006 05:08 (twenty years ago)

and now i'm back. fireworks display was mercifully short. i took a couple of pics... i'll upload them.

Can someone please explain to me the appeal of spending New Year's Eve in Times Square? I don't get it, and never have.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 January 2006 05:12 (twenty years ago)

HI MOM I'M ON TV!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 1 January 2006 05:15 (twenty years ago)

me either. but i was at least technically getting paid during the 7 minutes i spent down there. actually, the last 2 minutes i was out there clicked into overtime pay!

I walked up to a bar up on Queens Boulevard for an hour. They played lots of reggaeton, and for once I almost got it since it was basically "Gasolina" and "Oye Mi Canto" and "Culo" and other stuff I kinda recognized and people were dancing really great to it, then the DJ switched to hip-hop, and it was really cool when Ludacris was synced perfectly to Brooks & Dunn on CNN with the scare line beneath talking about Palestinians, then "Gold Digger," then "Candy Shop," then "Ugly" by Bubba Sparxxx at midnight (great choice!) into "Auld Lang Syne" as the confetti flew everywhere and the ball dropped (and a drag queen "dropped" on CNN?? Not sure I understood that part, but that's what seemed to be happening) then "New York New York" then "This is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan, which I love, then "Just Lose It" or whatever it's called by Eminem which sounded OK but I finished up my Stella Artois and walked back home. Happy New Ears everybody, g'night.

xhuxk, Sunday, 1 January 2006 06:03 (twenty years ago)

Also, oh yeah, Alex OTM about Times Square. That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

xhuxk, Sunday, 1 January 2006 06:05 (twenty years ago)

I like your latest login name, jbr. Happy New Year all.

Tomato Voyeur (Bimble...), Sunday, 1 January 2006 07:16 (twenty years ago)

Happy new year, ILM. Hope it's a lot less fraught than 2005 was.

Jeff W (zebedee), Sunday, 1 January 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Happy new year, ILM!

youn, Sunday, 1 January 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

If I never heard "New York, New York" by fuckin' Sinatra ever again, that'd be just tres swell avec moi.

The Mrs. & I had a mellow evening. Bought loads of yummy things like prosciutto, brie cheese, grapes, shrimp cocktail and other stuff, camped out in front of the tube, watched "The English Patient", watched the ball drop (sort've more of non-event than usual, this year, I thought) then called it a night.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 January 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Happy New Years!

My DJ "job" at my "friend"'s house didn't go over too well.. I was told to stop playing crappy music (at the time i was playing my top singles of the year...Cool high school kids must not like "1 Thing," "Be Mine!" or "Hot Lava")... So then I went to my Now That's What I Call Music Vol. 1, 2, and 4 -- Someone went over and turned down the music (which wasn't that loud to begin with) because they didn't like it... The only song that got a reaction was "All the Small Things," which i didn't even intend to play. I gave up and apologized for not bringing Fall Out Boy.
