Just hit Oink. I'm about to give it a first listen...maybe I'll YSI something later. Unless of course that would incur the wrath of a certain Counting Crows fan.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Alex in NYC like Counting Crows or was that a joke? I'm a little daft.

Freud Junior (Freud Junior), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:46 (twenty years ago)

That was, I believe, a joke. And a poor one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:50 (twenty years ago)

What is Oink?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Just search for the 300 oink invite threads.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Some p2p service that 'google people' are constantly wanting invites for on this board. I believe ILM comes up first when you search for it on google.

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I used to think we just had a load of lurkers who were always reading but never spoke until an oink invite thread appeared.
Then I found out about the google thing.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I have to hear this now. Someone please YSI.

a. begrand (a begrand), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:56 (twenty years ago)

There is a tremor in the force.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 January 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Listening now... the sound is HUGE like it was recorded in a hangar or something.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 2 January 2006 03:33 (twenty years ago)

I would like to note that the torrent folder misspells this as "Hosannas FORM the Basments of Hell", which would have been cooler. And yes it is massive but I kind of liked the clearer sound of the self-titled. Jaz's vocals are mixed too low.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 2 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Igotta find this shit

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 2 January 2006 07:47 (twenty years ago)

KILLING JOKE IS STILL ALIVE???

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Monday, 2 January 2006 07:59 (twenty years ago)

it's not as immediate as some klling joke albums. wil lreport back after a few listens

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I'd just like to say for the record that I'm not especially pleased with the album title. Sounds like something Venom would've come up with. And don't get me wrong -- I love Venom, but I have higher expectations of the `Joke.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it lacks the aesthetic punch I'd expect from them. On the other hand, if it was a live album recorded on Killing Joke's super-secret basement tour of the Northwest, that would be awesome

Mr Straight Toxic (ghostface), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

How do I get my hands on this?

James Osborne, Monday, 2 January 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why, but I have this gut feeling that this album is actually unobtainable at present and certain people are bluffing.

Tomato Voyeur (Bimble...), Monday, 2 January 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

it is on the favoured p2p's.......on first listen it is of the pandemonium/democracy feel. not as immediate as the last self titled one. will have to let it marinate a little .

x-postalex in NYC:: did andy gill produce the new one as it definately has a different feel from the self titled album .

william harris (drone/a/sore), Monday, 2 January 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

"Implosion":

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 2 January 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Well actually it sounds pretty good doesn't it? I worry about Jaz's vocal chords though. I mean, when he speaks in normal life, does any sound come out? He's not ruining his speaking voice forever in this process, is he?

Tomato Voyeur (Bimble...), Monday, 2 January 2006 23:49 (twenty years ago)

I like it. Dense sounding stuff...Jaz sounds brutal, and I mean that in a good way.

Thanks, Simon H!

a. begrand (a begrand), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Cheers for this, Simon....

Andy Gill wasn't involved on this album -- it was self-produced, and engineered by someone named Jerry Kandiah.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to hear Jaz get back to actualy singing (as he did circa Fire Dances and NightTime) and not just shouty bellowing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

New song: Not a return to form. Just a continuation of the Nu Metal sound that was prevail on the last album. IMO KJ should go for amore refined, clear sound rather than just a wall of noise.
Geordies guitar playing deserves to be heard lucidly and Jaz should sing, rather than just growl.

Peter West (Peter West), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Great minds think alike Alex..............I will try to figure out how come you think as I do!!!!!!

Peter West (Peter West), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:12 (twenty years ago)

Peter -- howaya?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Hi Alex. I'm fine

Peter West (Peter West), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Yes, It does sound like it was recorded in a aircraft hanger .............unfortunately they seem to have recorded it just as a Boeing 747 was coming into land

Peter West (Peter West), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Bahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I like this

a lot

cory monster, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Can someone please link a torrent for the album?

James Osborne, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 07:21 (twenty years ago)

is youth back after he produced " pop life " for bananarama ?

retrogurl, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

I don't think Youth has any involvement on the new album. I think their lineup is pretty solid now.

James Osborne, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 08:50 (twenty years ago)

IKJO we would like to play and record what we want.

KJ, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

KJ: You indeed do have a right to "play and record what you want". In the same way that you have the right to "play and record what you want", I also have the right to give my opinion of what you did play and record .
Goddit?

Peter West (Peter West), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

oddly enough some of the tracks on that torrent appear to be in mono, either that or really badly mixed. it's not their best. sadly.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Simon, any chance of posting (via ysi) any more of these?

I have to say -- and this is from a zealot -- I'm not especially over the moon about "Implosion". Geordie's parts are -- as usuall -- top drawer, but the track overall suffers a bit from a lack of definition. Too busy and muddled. And Jaz is -- I'm sorry -- the weakest link, here. What happened to singing?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 00:20 (twenty years ago)

And Jaz is -- I'm sorry -- the weakest link, here. What happened to singing?

"Majestic" might be up your alley, it has Jaz's least Lemmylike vox. Probably my fave track so far.

a. begrand (a begrand), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 10:18 (twenty years ago)

"Implosion" is great. The beats are slammin'.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I see what you guys are saying about the singing though ... there's a Ministry circa "The Mind Is a Terrible Thing To Taste" vibe about the entire track.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad bergrand said "Lemmy-like", that needed to be said. Thanks.

Tomato Voyeur (Bimble...), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Lemmyvox.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 January 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

This is really awful.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 5 January 2006 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I hope it's an unmastered advance or something, cause with the right production this could've been a beast.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear.

There's probably just about half a decent album here - 'Tribal Antidote', 'Invocation' 'Majestic', 'Judas Goat', but as for the rest of it, there's a real "will this do?" feel about it.

The worst culprits are 'Walking with Gods', which rips off 'Sun Goes Down' and 'Fall Of Because' and doesn't do it with any particular subtlety, and 'Lightbringer', a cross between 'Pssyche' and a very large pile of twaddle. Oh, and those tracks are over 8 and 9 minutes long respectively. Yes, that's 8 and 9.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 8 January 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Song length is a problem, yes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 January 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Well...

I think it has the best album cover yet

Huh?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 15 January 2006 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh god - the length thing was the problem w/ the last album. Hit it & quit it, Jaz!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 15 January 2006 04:49 (twenty years ago)

.....if the songs were under 4 mins....

THE DIFFERENCE IT WOULD MAKE!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 15 January 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

> ...but as for the rest of it, there's a real "will this do?" feel about it.

What did you expect? They've done this to death over the last 20-something years. They're just trading on the name to make a few more bucks.

fr, Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

fr, I really don't think that's true. If there's any band who can fairly be said to only make albums when they feel like they've got something worth saying, it's KJ - they spend lo-o-ong periods of time dormant, much longer than a band who was eager to max out $$$ would.

Mr Straight Toxic (ghostface), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

What did you expect? They've done this to death over the last 20-something years. They're just trading on the name to make a few more bucks.

Like you would know.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 January 2006 00:20 (twenty years ago)

This album sounds like the one i've always been waiting for from Killing Joke...i'm really impatient to listen to the ultimate mix...
If there's a point that could matter, then Light Bringer is a bit too long.
The whole album sounds really more dense than KJ 2003, and I'm pretty sure it will take me more than a thousand listens to hear all the subtles sounds (as was Pandemonium). Judas Goat could be my all time favorite KJ track (the melody of the chorus reminds me something from Dead Can Dance -only the melody, hm?- ).

Anthony Mercier, Friday, 27 January 2006 11:07 (twenty years ago)

If you like this album, i recommend you to give a listen to this band called NAKED APES (two albums on ROADRUNNERS RECORDS, not the ridiculous band called THE NAKED APES)...
I saw them live a few years ago, a singer + a guitarist + A MAN ON ELECTRONIC DRUMS = loads of electro. sounds... it was funny how they sound like KJ and sometimes like Cubanate, the guitarist was playing a big hollwbody (epiphone emperor) and was moving like Geordie on stage, and the singer had the same tribal paints on his face as Jaz...
They were talented though, and a remember that some of the songs were sounding really really close to the LIghtbringer and Walking with Gods...
Sure you'd like it.

anthony mercier, Friday, 27 January 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Word from the firmament is that the tracks currently in rotation are mercifully not the final mixes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Apparently the release date's just been put back to 3rd April.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 09:54 (twenty years ago)

I've got the promo CD which I've reviewed but I really do hope they re-mix it for release cos the sound quality (straight from CD) is horrible, which really lets down some great tracks.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Alex, that's great news!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Is "Gratitude" an Oingo Boingo cover?

LoneNut, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

What did you expect? They've done this to death over the last 20-something years. They're just trading on the name to make a few more bucks.

fun fact: lots of musicians actually enjoy performing and recording music!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

No, they all should quit when they start sucking. Just my Opinion (Until I become dictator of the universe. Then it becomes The Law).

LoneNut, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Wow, this album sounds like it was mixed in a clothes dryer filled with puce fluffy feather pillows!

LoneNut, Saturday, 4 February 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
For those of you playing along at home, lots of discouraging rumors about -- Raven no longer to tour with the band, evidently. Shame, that.

Tenuously related, you can read my interview -- should you give a damn -- with original drummer Big Paul Ferguson from 2004 by clicking here. Enjoy.

For that elite coterie who may have the taste to care...

Killing Joke Reschedule UK tour - 24th March 2006

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Killing Joke have rescheduled their forthcoming UK tour. The tour, which was due to start on 2nd April in Cambridge, will now start on 29th April in Nottingham.

An official statement from the band says "Killing Joke would like to apologise to all gatherers for the rescheduling of the British tour to promote the glorious recording Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell. This is unfortunately due to psychiatric problems within the band. We are now on fire and in anticipation of your presence. Thank you for your love and support."

two weeks pass...
Well, saw them live 3 times(and first time!)beginning of the month in UK and what a brilliant gig´s they all were, the new bass player did a great job even though he has not the huge stage present Raven does parently have but 2 thumbs up for him,the overall expirience was awesome not to say more.I think the new album is their best to date!and is the album i have been waiting fore from the Joker´s,it has been in constant rotation in my player fore almost 2 months and i find myself liking it more and more with every listen, you get used to the muffled sound and now i would not have it any different.Favorit songs so far Judas Goat(propeble my all time fav KJ song)Lightbringer(not a second to long),HFTBOH and Invocation,Implosion is the only song i skip sometimes.Straight 5 stars *****

The second coming of The Gathering?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think the new album is their best to date!

With all due respect, this is a patently ridiculous statement. I know many of our mutual friends on the Gathering disagree, but I just can't abide the myth that this album tops all their others. Geordie's work is top notch, but there is precious little defintion to the sound, the drums are a dull rattle, the bass is largely inaudbile, the lyrics are largely crap and Jaz's vocals have absolutely never been worse (I blame the cigars). There are moments on there worth the trouble, but as far as I'm concerned, Hosannas... is still sub-Democracy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

It's grown on me quite a bit, I think it's their best in quite some time. (personally, I prefer it over Democracy, but that's just me)

Did espect this response from you Alex, and thank god or somebody we don´t all have the same taste,i know you think Night Time is Killing Joke´s finest hour and i think it is almost so too,now is actually the first time in my life that i have all KJ´s studio albums in my posession, had not heard Night Time in many years along with Pandemonium and the first album and yes let´s not forget Outside The Gate which was actually my first Killing Joke to be bought and i was absolutely in love with, later got NT and BTATS and rate them both far above OTG as propeble every one else. But my tolerance for heavy and hard hitting tunes and metal has increased with the years but i do sometimes whish Jaz was still able to "sing" like he used to cause he had a beatyful singing voice, but i also like his later growls and screaming and think his voice fits very nicely with the new material....anyway as i have now all the albums and been rediscovering some of the older ones i am going to list them in order of rating.
1.Hosannas From The basemennts Of Hell
2.Night Time
3.Extremities,Dirt And Various Repressed Emotions
4.BTATS
5.Pandemonium
6.what´s THIS for....!
7.Killing Joke 2003
8.Killing Joke 1980
9.Democracy
10.Outside The Gate
11.Revelations
12.Fire Dances

Georg Petur Sveinbjornsson, Saturday, 27 May 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm with Alex. This should have been a great follow-up to a wicked comeback record, but alas they sound their age on this one. Where's Grohl when you need him?

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 27 May 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to see KJ for the first time ever in July. Looking forward to it.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Saturday, 27 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

This album is monstrous. The opening is like being chucked off the top of a mountain, and as the album progresses your life flashes before your eyes, you bounce off some rocks and trees, and when the album comes to a close you land with a final capitulation to the end.
